~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Sundance Channel announced at a small breakfast presentation in NYC yesterday morning its intention of moving into the original scripted series world for the first time in its history, while maintaining its strong presence in the documentary film and reality series genres.  Sundance is described by Pres/GM Sarah Barnett as “what’s now and what’s next, with flair and fun” and a “rebooted arts channel.”   Sundance Channel is delving into scripted programming with two specific criteria — great creative talent and addictive timely stories.  Here is their first project on its docket, set to debut this fall 2010:

  • Carlos – The network’s first-ever scripted miniseries shines a light on international terrorist Carlos the Jackal – the Godfather of International Terrorism – who led a series of terror attacks in Europe and the Middle East in the 1970s and 1980s. The three-part miniseries stars Edgar Ramirez in the title role and is produced by Film en Stock for Canal Plus in association with Sundance Channel.

Additional Sundance Channel scripted series in development for 2010:

  • Triple Crossing – Crime drama set in a rough South American city that borders Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. Produced by John Malkovich’s Mr. Mudd.
  • The Clinic – A medical researcher in the not-too-distant future manages a controversial clinic involved with human testing. Produced by Tony To and written by John Harrison and Michael Duggan.
  • Fear of Flying – Based on the novel by Erica Jong about the poet Isadora Wing’s life through the eyes of the many men she loved. Produced by Mammoth Screen and ITV.
  • Shutterbabe – Inspired by a true story about a young female photojournalist who travels the world capturing current events in dangerous places. Produced by Likely Story.

Sundance Channel also has a handful of design series in development:

  • Teman & Teran – Docu-series about identical 6′ tall identical twins Teman and Teran Evans, who are Harvard-educated jewelry designers, production designers and architects. Produced by Renegade 83 Entertainment.
  • Made on Earth – Industrial designer Stephen Burks journeys with artists to remote villages around the world, discovering native ways to make sustainable goods. True Entertainment produces.
  • Design Intervention with Brian Collins – Branding expert Brian Collins takes on branding and design challenges at some of the biggest and most well-known companies in the world. Produced by Magnet Media.

Sundance Channel has a further quartet of fashion series in development:

  • Agent of Fashion – Series will follow Brian Stark and his Brand Equity Showroom that encompasses several men’s and women’s contemporary and street wear designers. Brian will seek out new and emerging designers and usher them into retail outlets, runway shows and more. Produced by Magical Elves.
  • All on the Line – An expert host introduces an up-and-coming fashion designer whose line is in trouble. Problems will be fixed to re-launch the line and put it in front of buyers. Authentic Entertainment produces.
  • Fashion Fix – Hosted by a pair of fashion insiders, this series will work with an emerging designer whose line needs help. World of Wonder produces.
  • Fashion Icons – Series showcases major designers as they create new creations for their celebrity muse to model. Produced by Jane Cha of Full Picture.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

MTV approved two new series in the extreme stunt reality genre:

  • Dudesons in America – Four Finnish extreme stuntmen and pranksters come to America to live their dream of conquering even dumber stunts than they did at home. Think of this as the Finnish version of MTV’s Jackass. Series is produced by Rabbit Films and Dickhouse Entertainment.
  • MTV’s Parkour Challenge (wt) – Based on the successful one-hour special that aired last October, the series highlights the fast-growing sport of parkour where participants needs to move as swiftly as possible between two points.  The only thing is, there may be a major crevasse between those points, or a large building – anything that requires the athlete to jump, roll, climb, leap, flip, fly or sprint. In each episode, six contestants will face off, testing their parkour skills in different urban settings. The series is produced by One Louder Productions, Transition Productions and WFPF.

CBS Survivor series host Jeff Probst confirmed he will remain as host of the reality series for two more seasons. Probst will also continue as executive producer on the show through the 2010-2011 season. The series’ 20th edition launches this Thursday as Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains.
