Netflix has signed a multiyear deal with The Walt Disney Company to become the exclusive US subscription service for first-run live-action and animated films from Disney’s network of studios. The deal covers films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Marvel, and Disneynature. This exclusivity won’t begin until 2016, which is when new feature films from any of those studios will begin to show up on Netflix first. The deal also covers “high-profile” Disney direct-to-video releases, which will arrive on the subscription service beginning in 2013. A separate multiyear catalog deal struck between the two companies makes classic titles such as Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo, and Pocahontas immediately available on Netflix. Financial terms for either agreement were not disclosed.

Viacom is teaming up with T-Mobile to live stream an eight-hour “Big & Best of 2012” bash. The cross-network event, which is bringing together Viacom properties like MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, and CMT, will begin at 12pm ET on December 12 (12/12/12 at 12) and will consist of live performances, celebrity guests, and programming highlights from this year. It will also air new episodes of Viacom-owned shows like The Colbert Report, Guy Code, Big Morning Buzz Live, and Live in Nashville, according to MTV News. Hosted by MTV News’ Sway Calloway, VH1’s Carrie Keagan, and CMT’s Kourtney Hansen, the event will broadcast live from MTV’s Time Square studio as well as on location in music venues in NYC, Boston, and Nashville. The live stream will be accessible on Viacom-owned digital properties including MTV.com, VH1.com, CMT.com, ComedyCentral.com.
Kraft Foods’ liquid water enhancer MiO Energy has launched a new branded entertainment campaign in partnership with male-centric digital media property CraveOnline. Per the partnership, CraveOnline has developed a custom destination on its website titled The D.A.Y. (Doctors Against Yawns). The section features a six-part branded video series that follows a character called Dr. Don T. Yohnomor in his life-long search to find a cure for the common yawn. He claims to have found a cure, which, of course, happens to be MiO Energy. The D.A.Y. section also offers an array of other related content, including a guide to surviving awkward yawn moments, the 10 most-yawnable films, and more. The page is live now and will run through December 24.
Cablevision’s Optimum App, which allows customers to stream live TV when connected to an in-home Wi-Fi network, is now available on select Android-powered Samsung and Motorola devices. The free app gives customers full access to their Cablevision TV package as long as they’re inside their home. It also gives Optimum TV customers the ability to search the channel guide, manage DVR settings, check out programming recommendations, and turn their device into a remote control. Prior to this, the app had been available on iOS devices, the Kindle Fire, and Mac and PCs. Cablevision says the Optimum App has been downloaded over 1 million times to date.
The BBC has launched a new Connected Red Button for those who own a Virgin Media TiVo box. The interactive button, which is designed to work for TVs that are hooked up to the internet, pulls up an overlay once it’s clicked on, offering access to a wide array of BBC content, from children’s programming to live sports streams and news and weather clips. It will be able to pull up curated content that’s relevant to what the viewer is watching on TV, thereby enhancing the TV-viewing experience. It’s an expansion of BBC’s existing Red Button service, which currently has an audience of 20 million users per month. BBC says it plans to roll out the Connected Red Button to other internet-connected TVs over the coming months.
LoveFilm, Amazon’s UK-based subscription video streaming service, is now available on the Nintendo Wii, and will arrive on the Wii U “shortly.” A direct competitor to Netflix in the region, the service offers users unlimited access to film and TV content for 4.99 pounds ($8) per month. At launch, the service is offering blockbuster film titles like Sherlock Holmes, Inception, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I and TV fare such as Downton Abbey and Grey’s Anatomy to the 8 million Wii users in the UK. They can download the LoveFilm app for free via the Wii Shop Channel on the console. Other platforms LoveFilm is available on include fellow gaming consoles like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as well as a number of tablets and other connected devices.

Ensequence‘s interactive ad and content software will be embedded into all Sony connected TVs beginning in 2013, thanks to a new multiyear deal between the two companies. This will allow advertisers to insert engagement features such as clickable banners, landing pages, product request forms, coupons, and surveys to their TV ads. Programmers will have the option to deliver polls, trivia games, photo galleries, location-based check-in services, and other interactive/social features tied to their TV shows. Ensequence will take care of the deployment, tracking, and management of the interactive ads and content. Beginning in 2013, all Sony TVs will ship with the Ensequence platform built in. The platform will also be available for Sony 2011-12 connected TVs through software updates.
Cable & Wireless Communication’s (CWC) Caribbean division, LIME, has selected Entone TV’s FusionTV solution to power a new pay-TV service that will be delivered over the web. The FusionTV solution includes adaptive bitrate and HTTP Live Streaming technologies, which will enable LIME to deliver its pay-TV service over various network conditions. Subscribers who connect an Entone Hybrid TV device to a broadband network will be able to access over 130 channels and stream on-demand OTT content. LIME’s basic TV service channel lineup includes programs from major US networks such as ABC, CBS, and NBC, sports from ESPN, music from MTV, and children’s programming from Nickelodeon, as well as news and lifestyle content from Warner Bros. and BBC America.
IDC projects smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2012 to reach 224.5 million units, which would represent 39.5% in year-over-year growth. For the whole year, IDC forecasts smartphone shipments to hit 717.5 million units, which would equal a year-over-year increase of 45.1%. IDC sees Android maintaining its position as the top smartphone operating system worldwide, as it’s expected to account for 68.3% of the global market. Coming in behind Android will be Apple’s iOS, which will grab an 18.3% market share. The rest of the top five will be BlackBerry (4.7%), Windows Phone (2.6%), and Linux (2.0%). What’s interesting is where IDC sees the smartphone OS market four years from now. In 2016, IDC expects Android to maintain its lead, but drop its market share to 63.8%. This is because of the encroachment of iOS and Windows, which IDC says will grab market shares of 19.1% and 11.4%, respectively. In other words, beyond 2016, the smartphone world might actually become a three-horse race.
While Android may be commanding the worldwide smartphone market, Apple’s iOS is still the king when it comes to mobile web traffic. According to data from Chitika Insights, which conducted a “user agent analysis on billions of ad impressions” coming only from an iOS or Android device between May 27 and November 27, 2012, iOS’s share of mobile web traffic hovered around 65% during those six months. Android’s share of mobile web traffic peaked at 40% in late August, thanks in part to strong Samsung Galaxy S III sales, says Chitika. However, once the iPhone 5 came out in September, followed by the release of the iPad Mini and a newer version of the iPad, iOS was able to recover the lost market share on its way to 67% on November 27, 2012. Chitika notes that both third-party research firms and its own data show that the smartphone web traffic share is a virtual tie between iOS and Android. What’s contributing to iOS’ overall dominance is Apple’s commanding lead in the tablet market.
Women at NBCU, NBCUniversal Integrated Media’s (IM) female-targeted creative content, marketing, and research initiative, has added eight high-level digital execs from a broad range of industries to Women@NBCU, the digital sub-committee of its Advisory Board. The new members are Gina Bianchini, Founder, Mightybell; Theresia Gow, Partner, Accel Partners; Aileen Lee, Founder, Cowboy Ventures and Partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers; Alison Moore, EVP and GM, DailyCandy; Brit Morin, Founder & CEO, Brit Media; Janet Scardino, former CEO, Viggle; Tina Sharkey, former Chairman and Global President, BabyCenter, a Johnson and Johnson company; and Randi Zuckerberg, Founder, Zuckerberg Media. The digital sub-committee, which is co-chaired by Lauren Zalaznick, Chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media, and Nick Lehman, President/Digital of the same division, serves as a “think tank” on female trends and marketing to women across the web, mobile, social, and other emerging media platforms.
Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has appointed Maria Badillo to the position of VP/Programming & Production for Tr3s, the company’s US Hispanic network. In the new role, she will lead Tr3s’ programming strategies and original production output across all content platforms.
UK-based Mail Online, a division of DMGT, has named Rich Sutton as its new Chief Revenue Officer. He will oversee advertising. The digital news outlet has also tabbed Sean O’Neal to head marketing as the company’s new Global Chief Marketing Officer. Both will be based in NY and will report to Mail Online Publisher Martin Clarke. The company currently generates reaches over 100 million monthly uniques from across the globe. In the US, its reach stands at 18.8 million monthly unique visitors and 2.1 million daily visits. The company says it’s looking to capitalize on its growth in the US.
