Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 16, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Still basking in the underwater glow of the 10th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants, Nickelodeon picks up a new season (26 episodes) of the yellow porous one and his pals. This new order brings the total number of SpongeBob SquarePants episodes to 178. The new episodes will, of course, feature the original voice cast including Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs) and Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks). Additionally, SpongeBob celebrates the holiday season with his new song, Don’t Be a Jerk (It’s Christmas!), performed by Tom Kenny who co-wrote the song with Andy Paley, which is available on the Nick Records’ SpongeBob’s Greatest Hits CD. A Nicktoons Production, SpongeBob SquarePants is executive produced by creator Stephen Hillenburg as well as Paul Tibbitt (former writer/director on the series), and produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios. By the way, if you are looking for SpongeBob you can now also find him on Facebook ( www.facebook.com/spongebob) and Twitter ( www.twitter.com/happysquared ).

MARKETING/LICENSING
Activision Publishing and GameMill Publishing have entered into a deal with Cepia, LLC to develop and publish video games based on the new popular hamster toy Zhu Zhu Pets. The first Zhu Zhu Pets game will be released for Nintendo DS in spring 2010. The game is currently in development with Black Lantern Studios. Nick Cannon teams with Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing Division to produce a new multimedia book series to coincide with the TV movie, School Gyrls, which Cannon directed and will premiere on Nickelodeon on February 21, 2010. Simon Spotlight, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s, launches the publishing program with a movie novelization in February and a movie tie-in scrapbook. Aladdin Books, another imprint, will publish six original novels based on the three members of the real teen music group School Gyrls, who also star in the movie. The School Gyrls movie follows the adventures of the three girls at an exclusive, all-girls boarding school. The group, signed to Cannon’s NCredible Entertainment, will go out on a 10-week nationwide tour with Cannon in the spring 2010 to coincide with the release of their debut album by Island Records. A second movie is also being planned, as well as a possible TV-series.
CPLG Canada, Cookie Jar’s licensing arm, inks new deals to represent three properties. CPLG Canada will create licensing programs for: The World of Eric Carle across key categories (e.g. apparel & accessories, electronics/online, publishing, stationery/party goods/seasonal, toys and games and HBA products); and ink licensing deals, focusing on TV, DVDs and merchandise, for Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight, for which Bandai is the master toy licensee and interactive partner for the property, and Namco-Bandai is the video game licensee; and will sign licensees for The Monster Factory’s (Not So) Scary Monsters in a range of categories (e.g. plush, games and puzzles, publishing and preschool apparel) for Canada. Additionally, CPLG Canada signs on two new licensees for Jim Benton’s It’s Happy Bunny that will be available in 2010: C&D Visionary (air fresheners, buttons, button sets, shoelaces, lanyards, patches, wristbands, key chains and magnets, among others); Trends International (posters, calendars, journals, stickers, tattoos, bookmarks and transfers).
In other Cookie Jar news, Imports Dragons, a Canadian toy and game distributor, is named master toy licensee for its property Caillou. New Caillou product will be available from 2010.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: Invented by George Lerner in 1949 and marketed by Hasbro in 1952, this is the first toy ever to be advertised on television on April 30, 1953. The toy was originally distributed in cereal boxes, because Lerner couldn’t convince any major toy manufacturers to sell the toy in stores. Hasbro saw it, and paid the cereal company to stop distributing, and it went into wide production selling to the US market for the first time on May 1, 1952. and cost a mere 98 cents. The main part of the toy however, was supplied by parents out of their own cupboards. What toy is this? MR. POTATO HEAD Kudos to: Todd Brock-Burn Draft, Inc./Atlanta; Enid Chaban-Random House Children’s Books/NY; Amie Lozanski-Hasbro/Rumford RI; Deborah Duncan-WIVT WBGH/Binghamton; Erik Nelson-UPROAR!/Dallas; Josh Fisher-Brandissimo/LA; Stephen Stanley-JAKKS Pacific Inc./San Diego; John Mazur-PBS/PST; Candace Irving-Candace Irving & Assoc/Sonoma; Colleen Kennedy-YTV Canada Inc/Toronto
Today’s Trivia Question: This classic toy was originally designed to grab a share of the toy car market. When originally brought to market in 1968, there were just 16 models, with 11 of those designed by Harry Bentley Bradley. What was this wonderful toy line named? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
