Good morning, it’s Wednesday, December 12, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
NBC Universal added another platform for its download-to-own content – SanDisk‘s flash memory aided Fanfare service scheduled to launch in January. Fanfare is yet another PC to TV device that simplifies the transfer of content by allowing video to be downloaded to a USB drive then walked over to the TV. NBC was attracted by SanDisk’s proprietary fingerprinting/DRM technology as well as its willingness to offer flexibility in terms of pricing and packaging, according to Jean-Briac (JB) Perrette, President, NBC Universal Digital Distribution. (These were concessions, of course, that Apple was unwilling to make.)
Set top box-based digital download service Vudu, currently in beta, began offering 20th Century Fox Television shows such as 24, Prison Break and Family Guy as a la carte offerings, available in standard-def for $1.99/per episode. The titles are the first TV content to be offered by Vudu, which has branded itself as an HD video service for those tired of waiting for the HD DVD format war to be fought. Vudu also released The Borne Ultimatum yesterday, day-in-date with the DVD.
Comcast Entertainment Group’s The Style Network launched mystyle.com, a destination built to offer women tips on fashion, beauty, lifestyle and home. The site is presented in blog format, using celebrities and interactive applications as hooks.
Program Partners launched a series of online games, sweepstakes, videos and other interactive features for Merv Griffin’s Crosswords as part of a user-friendly microsite designed for inclusion in station affiliate websites.
CMT continues to integrate user participation from CMT.com with its programming. Online fan votes will determine the winner of this year’s CMT Music Awards on April 14, 2008, beginning Feb. 5 after the nominees are announced. More than 4 million votes were cast for Music City Madness 2 according to CMT, the network’s 2nd annual user generated talent search.
Online video syndication service Clip Syndicate signed an agreement to distribute video from Scripps Networks’ brands including HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network, Fine Living and Great American Country (GAC).
Salty star interviews from NoGoodTV.com will become featured segments on Warner Bros. Domestic Television’s Extra twice weekly, reports TV Week. Sensitive ears needn’t worry, though. WBDT will bleep out the inappropriate.
Ad-supported indie music service SpiralFrog announced it has licensed its 1 millionth track for free download. The PC-only service also offers a library of more than 3,500 music videos.
IAC’s Ask.com introduced a new privacy control allowing users to empty their search requests from their own PCs as well as the company’s servers. Google has been widely criticized for holding on to this data for months and sometimes years. Unfortunately, Ask still relies on Google for some of its text-based searches, so the opt out won’t wipe the slate completely clean in these instances.
Too bad. The hilarious “Here Comes Another Bubble” video featured on Monday has been ordered down off YouTube due to a copyright claim. The Richter Scales singers thought they were protected by the parody clause of the copyright statue, according to WSJ’s Boomtown blog. The song is still available on the Richter Scales website.

Google’s share of U.S. searches continued to climb in Nov. according to Hitwise, with the search engine accounting for over 65% of all searches. Yahoo’s share was 21.21% while MSN’s share fell to 7.09%.
MTV Networks formed a new sales unit to consolidate its digital ad and marketing efforts within in a single division. The Digital Fusion team, which will handle both existing digital inventory and up-and-coming products such as widgets, online video, games and virtual products, will operate within MTVN’s Digital Advertising Group and be led by Jason Witt, SVP & GM, Digital Fusion. Jason will report to Nada Stirratt, EVP, Digital Advertising, MTVN.
Digital content management and ad company MediaSpan relocated its online services unit from San Clemente to Irvine, CA. The move comes several months after MediaSpan moved its corporate headquarters from North Carolina to Ann Arbor, MI also to take advantage of a strong technology resource pool.
Just when we all thought strike talks were dead in the water, AMPTP.com unveiled a “New Economic Partnership” proposal proclaiming it “the greatest document since the Magna Carta.” But wait a minute – it’s a fake. That’s AMPTP.com not AMPTP. org, the official Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers site that looks just like it. The spoof is yet another attempt by the writers to use digital media to get their message out, but this one may go too far for some.
