Here’s another reason to look twice while crossing the street the car is a popular place for Smartphone users to watch video on apps from YouTube, Hulu, iTunes and the like. But while you’re watching your back, there’s good news for multichannel video providers in a new study from Cable & Telecommunications Association of Marketing and Nielsen that found video apps aren’t cannibalizing traditional TV. About 85% of video app users are still watching the same or more regularly scheduled TV, CTAM said. Apps may actually enhance the TV experience; about half of video app users say they are more engaged with a show after accessing the video app, while 35% have said video app usage has led them to visit the network of program Web site. For the most part, video app users are watching in the home about three-quarters access the video alternatives at the house, among other places. But half also say they watch while in the auto.
To foster the development of “platform-agnostic” content, MTV Networks created MTVX, a group that incubates programming for TV, online and mobile venues. The group’s first project is a Drew Barrymore-directed music video starring Chloe Moretz, Tyler Posey, Miranda Cosgrove, Alia Shawkat, Donald Glover, and Shailene Woodley that is running across platforms. Film producer and TV executive Dave Gale heads up MTVX as its Executive VP.
Discovery’s Shark Week scored more than 300,000 related tweets on its Sunday night debut, Discovery said. The network also snagged the first, second and third spots in Trendrr’s social TV rankings for that night.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
Online media verification service DoubleVerify introduced a new monitoring tool dubbed Navigator that’s geared for ad networks and ad exchanges to automatically ensure ads are placed in brand-safe environments in their inventory.
Display ad retargeting platform Retargeter.com reported that second quarter revenue rose three times over the year before, and the number of ad impressions increased seven times in the same period. The company added more than 260 new clients in the first half of the year.
The most social company is the New York Times, according to a survey from B2B marketing database firm NetProspex claiming the newspaper had the most socially connected employee base. The social media survey also found that the computer tech industry, not surprisingly, was the most social media-savvy industry in the United States, according to the analysis of 12 million employees in the NetProspex database. Job recruiters are more social than employees, the study said, while CEOs in general are not engaged in social media. San Francisco and San Jose are the most social cities.
With mobile usage ticking up daily, market research firm WebTrends detailed several metrics that marketers and businesses should track to understand how customers are responding to their mobile presence. For apps, those metrics include total downloads, number of users, number of active users, site visitors and new visitors. To determine whether users are engaged or loyal, consider frequency of visits, depth of visits (how many pages visited), duration, bounce rate, as well as the characteristics of the audience and their activities.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
Digital content creator Spanfeller Media Group landed $6 million in Series B funding from VantagePoint Capital Partners and other investors. The cash will go to growing editorial, business and launching new properties this year and early next. Spanfeller’s first property, The Daily Meal, launched in January 2011 and now attracts more than 1.5 million unique monthly visitors.
Online video syndicator Alphabird linked up with Meredith Corp in a partnership that may bring more branded online video to Meredith’s Web properties including Parents, Family Circle, More and Fitness. Under the deal, Alphabird will work with Meredith Video Studios to create new ad opportunities beyond the pre-roll.
TVGuide.com introduced a social-centric, personalized version of its entertainment listings dubbed Watchlist. Already TVGuide.com attracts 23 million users per month, and the free Watchlist option lets users personalize their TV listings by location, favorite shows, favorite celebrities and so on, while also integrating social media and social sharing tools, such as check-in functionality and the ability to see Facebook friends’ favorite shows.
CBSSports.com high school sports property MaxPreps.com introduced a new version of MaxStatsFB, a mobile stat tracker for high school football. It’s available for the iPad and taps into the MaxPreps.com database.
Digital media company PMC named Iva Campisano VP of Sales after working most recently at Apple on the iAd global sales team. PMC owns Deadline.com, HollywoodLife.com, HollyBaby.com, TVLine.com, MovieLine.com, and others.
