Cynopsis: DIGITAL
08/31/11

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, August 31, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

Yahoo is at it again. The search giant plans to launch several original Web shows this fall. The Web destination has locked up Morgan Spurlock, Niecy Nash, Judy Greer and others for its lineup of eight Web series premiering in October, per Variety who first reported the story    yesterday. Yahoo will sell the shows to advertisers targeting women on a “share of voice” basis using its data and insights tools to measure reach and targeting. Programming partners include Electus and others. Yahoo said its original video programming already reaches 26 million people per month. Yahoo has tried before to build a beachhead in originals, famously hiring TV executive Lloyd Braun to guide the company into online entertainment several years ago, but that effort didn’t pan out. The site, however, is still a traffic juggernaut and has been successful with some original series such as its Primetime in No Time recap show.

NBC plans to carry every Olympics event from the upcoming London 2012 games live. In many cases, that means the raw video will be streamed online, while most prime-time broadcasts will include taped competition, said an AP report. Today Executive Producer Jim Bell will oversee the coverage.

Social streaming movie service flickme.com launched yesterday with deals in place from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. The new service lets users rent or buy top Hollywood titles and watch instantly, logging in via their Facebook accounts. The service will face stiff competition from entrenched streamers like iTunes and Netflix but is banking on the social connection as a differentiator. The company is funded by Sequoia Capital.

In-flight entertainment technology provider Row 44 struck a deal with MLB Advanced Media to serve up live video and audio streams of more than 2,400 baseball games on WiFi-enabled devices on airlines that use its service. That includes Southwest and Norwegian Air Shuttle.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Online ad verification firm DoubleVerify landed $33 million in a third round of funding led by JMI Equity and Institutional Venture Partners, bringing DoubleVerify’s total venture money to $47 million. DoubleVerify’s tools help ensure brand ads run in safe environments. Brand clients include Sprint, Capital One, Walmart and the major media holding companies.

Interactive video ad technology firm Innovid raised $9.5 million in series B round led by Sequoia Capital. The money will be earmarked for global expansion and comes on the heels of a $4 million round last fall.

Social media analytics firm Roost officially launched a new analytics tool to measure Facebook and Twitter engagement in relation to a user’s audience size. Roost measures likes, shares comments, impressions and retweets against the audience to provide benchmarks of performance.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Expanding its tablet reach, CNN acquired iPad news app Zite and will continue to run Zite as a separate personalized news app. Over time, CNN may integrate the technology into CNN.com, said a CNN spokesperson.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Mobile payments could reach $240 billion this year, according to Juniper Research figures cited by eMarketer in a new report. That includes payments made remotely via the phone or at the point of sale using near-filed communications. Juniper says that figure will hit $670 billion by 2015, while Yankee Group also pegs the market similarly at about $246 billion this year.

Samsung is the top mobile handset market in the U.S. with about 25% market share, followed by LG at 21% and Motorola at 14%, according to new mobile handset data from comScore. On the smartphone side, Google’s Android platform now commands about 42% of the Smartphone market, with Apple next at 27%, and RIM pulling in at third with about 22%. All told, about 82 million people in the U.S. owned Smartphones for the three-month period ending in July, up 10 percent from the prior three-month period.

Social media measuring service Social Guide said the MTV VMAs from Sunday night ranked as the most social program measured to date, besting the premiere of Jersey Shore’s fourth season a few weeks ago. The VMAs logged nearly 560,000 uniques and 1.3 million comments.

About half of tablet owners say they watch movies and full-length TV shows on their mobile devices, according to new research from In-Stat. The research firm predicts that about two-thirds of the U.S. population will own a smartphone or tablet by 2015. “As these devices become a center-point for video engagement and consumption, content providers, device manufacturers, and operators need to support a multiscreen usage model that reflects social interaction, screen interaction, personalization, and mobility,” says Keith Nissen, Research Director at In-Stat. The report also projects that the number of  frequent mobile video users will more than triple over the next five years.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Over-the-top provider Boxee added music service MOG to its Boxee App Library along with instant streaming of more than 11 million songs.

Popular recipe site Foodily launched a Facebook app to let users share recipes on the social networking site. The app lets users see what recipes their friends are cooking and chatting about and they can compare recipes by ingredient, calories, fat content and other nutritional values.

The kids’ audiobook mobile app Tales2Go  launched in the Florida Virtual Curriculum Marketplace, a service that helps teachers find digital content for their classes. Tales2Go said it’s the first mobile app to be included in the Florida VCM.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Many of us could benefit from the reminder to stop texting and driving. So check out AT&T‘s latest component of its campaign to reduce the dangerous multitasking habit the provider launched an app designed to curb texting behind the wheel, AT&T DriveMode. When enabled, it automatically sends a reply to incoming messages letting the sender know the user is driving and unable to respond. The app can also disable emails as well as Web browsing, thereby reducing the temptation. The company’s Web site has a ton of useful info here on safe driving, videos on the dangers of texting and driving, and pledges for parents and their teens to sign.
