Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, August 29, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

As part of the announced strategic plan to double its number of international cable channels in the next two to three years, NBC Universal agreed to purchase Sparrowhawk Holdings and its worldwide cache of pay TV channels from Providence Equity Partners, 3i and management shareholders. This deal includes 18 feeds of the non-US Hallmark Channels, airing across 152 territories to more than 60 million subscribers in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, Latin America and Asia. Specific terms of the deal were not disclosed. When complete, this transaction will give NBCU Global Networks more than 30 channels in total, with future plans to expand to more than 50 channels in the next few years.

MTV ordered a new series called The Paper produced by the network’s MTV News and Docs unit. The eight-episode series will premiere first quarter 2008 and has begun production. The Paper chronicles high school journalism students and showcases The Circuit, the award-winning student-run newspaper based out of Cypress Bay High School in Weston, FL.

Canada’s The Comedy Network will debut season one of the sketch comedy series Blue Collar TV September 29 at 830p. The half-hour show stars Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy as they parody country and redneck livin’.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Update: ABC continues to dominate the evening news field maintaining the #1 position for seventeen out of the last eighteen weeks. The ratings re-cap for the week of August 20, 2007:
ABC: 8.08 million total viewers – 2.1/9 A25-54
NBC: 7.93 million total viewers – 2.0/8 A25-54
CBS: 6.13 million total viewers – 1.5/6 A25-54

Golf Channel’s The Natalie Gulbis Show returns September 19 at 10p for a third season. The six-episode series concludes October 24.

TNT partnered with Capital One to produce a series of one-minute mini-drama segments with a romantic story-line surrounding Capitol One’s credit cards. The Charm launches tonight within the 9p episode of Law & Order and continue in that time period for five consecutive weeks, culminating on September 26. After its linear debut, each episode will also appear for viewing on TNT.tv.

Finale Viewer Round-Up:

  • Lifetime’s season finale of Army Wives (10p) became the network’s most-watched original series telecast ever as it netted an average of 4.1 million total viewers. Over the inaugural 13-episode season, Army Wives averaged 3.7 million total viewers, 1.4 million W18-49 viewers, 1.4 million W25-54 viewers and 580,000 W18-34 viewers.
  • MTV’s Making The Band 4 live season finale (10p) drew in more than 5.1 million total viewers.
  • VH1’s season ending of the reality show Scott Baio is 45 … And Single (1030p) was the series’ highest-rated episode as it posted a 1.2 A18-49 rating and averaged 1.3 million A18-49 viewers and 1.6 million total viewers.
  • Big Love on HBO averaged 2.9 million viewers for its Big finale on Sunday night at 9p, marking that episode as the season’s most watched. Big Love has been renewed for a 3rd season.

Mark your calendars – Wednesday, September 19, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP) return to the negotiation table to see if they can come to any terms before the expiration date of the current contact at the end of October.  Wasn’t it during the Korean war the biggest question in the peace debates seemed to be the shape of the table used for the talks (I think they decided on oval)?  At these talks, the question is real estate.  Previous negotiations have taken place on AMPTP home land; the upcoming conversation will take place at the WGA.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Steven Christopher Parker has been added as a recurring character in next season’s ER from Warner Bros. TV, as an interning doctor.

Lifetime has cast Joey Honsa in the lead role of its drama project Family Practice from Sony Pictures TV.  The story revolves around Honsa’s character who is hired by a large, powerful and family-owned law firm, headed by patriarch Beau Bridges.  Also signing up for the family practice is Karin Anglin, who plays Bridges daughter, another attorney at the firm.

Joining the cast of Lost in the upcoming season in a recurring role will be Jeremy Davies, as one of the freighters.  Lost is from ABC Studios.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

The National Geographic Society restructured its Communication unit which is led by EVP, Betty Hudson who supervises strategic communications and public relations across the Society and its divisions; Ellen Stanley was upgraded to VP/Communications, NG Ventures; and Mimi Kourmanelis was promoted to VP/Communications, Mission Programs. They join other team members including Mary Jeanne Jacobsen, VP/Communications and Media Operations and Kathie Teter, VP/Communications, Special Projects.

Niels Schuurmans advanced to SVP/Brand Creative and Marketing at Spike TV. Niels will add consumer marketing to his duties along with managing the creative group. The consumer marketing group under Todd Ames will now report to Niels.  Well done Niels!

San Francisco-based Sugar Publishing, Inc., creator of the online community for women, added Lauren Zalaznick, President, Bravo Media to its Board of Directors.

Ricochet Television appointed Jennifer O’Connell as SVP to head the company’s North American office located in Los Angeles and to create and develop new programming content. Jennifer will report to Nick Emmerson, EVP.

A. Smith & Co. elevated Christmas Rini to Director/Development and she will maintain her role as developer of existing and new show formats, working closely with CEO Arthur Smith and President Kent Weed.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis:  CBS held steady Monday night coming in first with 2.7/8 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. ABC managed a win at 8p with a Wife Swap rerun at 2.3/7. Next, CBS took control at 9p as Two and a Half Men and Rules of Engagement averaged a 3.2/9, followed by another win for CBS during 10p as the CSI: Miami repeat came in with a 3.0/8.
