Cynopsis: DIGITAL


Good morning, it’s Wednesday, August 27, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Many of the major movie studios and online movie retailers are preparing to launch an new “Open Market” initiative as an effort to unify DRM standards across the digital video marketplace, reports TechCrunch. Lack of interoperability has slowed online sales of movies for years as consumers are reluctant to pay for downloads that may not work on off-brand televisions, DVRs or mobile devices. Studios including Fox, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Time Warner as well as retailers Amazon, Target, WalMart, Comcast, MovieLink and CinemaNow are reportedly in support of the effort. Such a standard would be a huge boon for Sony, for one, which like Apple makes much of its living by selling electronic devices.


Bucking what has become a digital industry standard The BBC announced beginning Sept. 13 it will extend the shelf life of its shows on its ad supported iPlayer service beyond the original 7-day limitation to help expose them to a broader audience. Also certain shows will now be made available as entire seasons. The iPlayer relaunched earlier this summer adding a larger viewing window and stereo BBC radio programs. 
Online movie service added Lionsgate titles to its catalog including classics like Reservoir Dogs, The Bank Job and Gods and Monsters. Jaman rents movies on demand for $2.99-$3.99 per title. The company has also signed licensing deals in recent months with Paramount, First Look and Magnolia.
Satellite radio service XM is serving up 24 hour audio coverage of the DNC on its “POTUS ’08” channel (#130,) including gavel-to-gavel coverage and round the clock interviews with pundits, party members, protestors and bloggers. (POTUS is beltway insider-speak for President of the United States.)


Interactive studio EQAL announces its follow up to lonelygirl15 today, premiering Sept. 20 with a special premiere at the New York Television Festival’s Digital Day on Sept. 16. The series is called LG15: The Resistance, baking in much of the mythology and two of the main characters from LG15 and KateModern including Jonas, played by Jackson Davis and Sarah played by Alexandra Dreyfus. The Resistance will continue with EQAL’s tradition of utilizing audience participation to drive the narrative through blog entries, puzzles and discussion forums while adding photo and video sharing on for the first time. Another change will be to debut new episodes only once a week, over a 6-month period in an attempt to make it easier for non-hardcore fans to catch up with the show. Distribution partners include MySpaceTV, imeem, Veoh, YouTube and Hulu.
Online video platform Animoto emerged from beta yesterday offering a range of tools for amateur video producers. The site has built a reported 4 million member user base by integrating with platforms such as Facebook and YouTube and rolling out new programs including a music submission program and MP4 video compatibility. Animoto’s latest ventures have been aimed at educators and businesses.  
White label mobile search and advertising firm JumpTap raised $26 million in an additional 4th round funding to continue its overseas expansion led by Alliance Bernstein L.P. The company says it now reaches over 150 million wireless subscribes through partnership with over 17 mobile carriers and content providers.
Blogger network Technorati acquired blog community, an amalgamation of sites devoted to anything from music to politics to technology, with an aggregate monthly audience of about 1 million users. Technorati will incorporate the group into its Technorati Media ad network.


Airfares aren’t the only thing going up for overseas travelers. AT&T just announced two new data plans for iPhone users who travel abroad and one of them costs as much as the phone itself. Option one gives subscribers 100 megabytes of data usage for $100. Option two comes with 200 MB for $200. You can sign up for then drop the service, but the minimum service option is for one month.


Online video advertising start-up Veeple is preparing its formal launch on Sept. 8 with a subscription-based ad platform incorporating a range of interactive options for content publishers and advertisers. The company offers Flash-based interactive ads accompanied by carefully developed analytics systems to measure performance for advertisers, according to CEO Scott Broomfield. To make its clickable ads and overlays as simple as possible to implement Veeple has created 17 standardized formats tailored for popular formats and portals including personal blogs, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
Google’s hosted ad management platform officially launched, allowing anyone with an AdSense account to sell, schedule, deliver and measure directly sold and network-based ad inventory.


The appointment of Joe Biden as VP and the lead up to the Democratic National Convention drove’s share of visits to its second highest total in the past year, according to Hitwise, increasing to 53% vs. 46% for was also beating in terms of time spent by a margin of almost 2 minutes per user as of Aug. 23.


Broken-hearted fans of the (former) WB rejoice. launches today at 2 pm ET/11 am PT with a full complement of former WB shows and WB studio productions including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars. Warner Bros. Television’s Digital group has done a nice job with the interface, building a customized Flash-based player and keeping things simple and easy to navigate while managing a jazzy, contemporary look. The sweet spot in terms of audience will no doubt be young people who cut their teeth on these shows. (Twenty-something viewers have been the power users during the summer long beta, according to WBTVG SVP/Digital Brett Bouttier, a third of whom say they no longer watch any linear television.) The most viewed show during the beta period was actually Friends – currently unavailable anywhere else online. New episodes of each show will be refreshed each Monday to get users accustomed to appointment viewing, ranging from a half a dozen to full seasons at a time. Original productions will roll out over the coming weeks, beginning with acquisitions like Blue Water – Australia’s highest rated show for young adults and the promising Sorority Fever coming Sept. 8, sponsored by H&M Clothing. The coolest app on the site is the WBLender, in its infancy at launch. Take clips from your favorite shows and create sharable mashups, with customized borders, soundtracks and transitions. There are only a few pre-selected scenes to choose from now, but soon you’ll be able to search the entire library by show, character name, phrase or episode. The idea is to empower the community to make the content their own, according to Mr. Bouttier. “Instead of acting like the big corporation we wanted to turn it back to them and see what they could do with it,” he said.
