Cynopsis: DIGITAL
8/22/07
Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, August 22, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Apple’s iTunes could face a run for its money in the coming months from a competitor that knows how to compete on price. Wal-Mart announced the launch of a new “DRM-free” zone on its website featuring tracks from major labels including EMI and Universal for the bargain price of 94 cents each or $9.22 per album. (In comparison, Apple is selling a limited number of DRM-free EMI songs for $1.29). Wal-Mart will also continue to sell WMA-formatted 128 kbps downloads for 88 cents each. Digital music has only accounted for 15% of all recorded music sales in the U.S. until now. Look for that number to increase as DRM-free tracks open the market up to more competition.
MTV Networks, RealNetworks and Verizon Wireless also announced a partnership to create their own online movie store consumers can access via PC, MP3 player or mobile phone. Rhapsody America will integrate Real’s subscription Rhapsody service with MTV’s Urge and Verizon’s V Cast music offerings for a single monthly price. Real Networks will contribute cash, employees, player hardware and content and own 51% of the venture. MTV Networks gets the remaining 49%, contributing $230 million in cash, promotional muscle, Urge subscribers and content. Former Urge GM Michael Bloom will head Rhapsody America, which will have offices in New York, Seattle and San Francisco. No word yet on pricing, but Rhapsody subscribers currently pay $12.99 per month for all they can listen to, the model Microsoft’s Zune also deploys.
NBC and The Associated Press struck a deal to allow the AP to include NBCOlympics.com-produced video links, text and photos from the 2008 Summer Games in a premium online service for its client newspaper sites. NBC holds the exclusive broadcast and broadband rights to the Games and will present more than 3,600 hours of coverage.
XM Satellite Radio will provide exclusive audio coverage of all six BCS Conferences in College Football this year, dedicating 15 channels to games from the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC. XM will also broadcast the BSC National Championship and other bowl games under an agreement with Fox Sports. Go to the XM website for a full channel guide.
Yahoo! is featuring exclusive video from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart‘s on-the-scene reports from Iraq on its home page and on Yahoo! TV this week. It is the first time that Daily Show content has been officially featured online outside of ComedyCentral.com.
CMT Cross Country: Jack Ingram and Miranda Lambert will debut on CMT’s website on August 27. Four days before premiering on the network.
WCSN announced their exclusive line-up of world championship and Olympic qualifying events webcast live and on-demand on WCSN.com & WCSN TV staring August 24. Events include Track & Field World Championships, World Rowing Championships, World Gymnastics Championships and Cycling Road Racing World Championships.
UK-based social networking site Bebo announced a partnership to integrate Microsoft‘s Instant Messaging protocol within its profiles. Beginning this fall, Bebo users will be able to use Windows Live to chat with friends within their networks and import/export contacts from the client software.
Multiplatform animation network Aniboom launched a branded channel on YouTube featuring short form animations from more than 60 countries. Aniboom conducts several creative contests to drive fresh content to its site, offering up to $50,000 in prizes a year.
IPTV company Narrowstep launched a channel dedicated to competitive mountain biking. Narrowstep’s telvOS platform will offer live and on-demand coverage, trailers and “headcam” streaming from popular biking events on Mtbcut.tv, headed by professional rider Stu Thompson.
New Media BC has announced it will produce and present the first annual PopVox Awards honoring excellence in digital media at the upcoming Vancouver International Digital Festival on September 22. Entries can be submitted on the awards website popvoxawards.com now through September 7th. Winners will be determined via online votes through the site.
Adobe Systems unveiled a Flash Player 9 update codenamed “Moviestar” that will bring HD video technology to the web. Moviestar will support the compression standard now available in Blu-ray systems, HD-DVD players and HD TV set top boxes.
Tribune shareholders approved an $8.2 billion deal led by billionaire Sam Zell to take the company private. Despite concerns over taking on massive debt to finance the buyout, 97% of the shares voted approved the merger. The company is looking into selling the Chicago Cubs to help alleviate some of the debt but has said it plans to hold onto its current print and digital assets.
ESPN.com acquired London-based rugby news site Scrum.com, launched in 1997. The deal follows the acquisition of cricket site Cricinfo.com in June and the recent launch of French, German, Spanish and Italian versions of ESPNsoccernet.com.
The FCC set a date of January 16, 2008 as the day it will begin auctioning the 700 Mhz band spectrum reclaimed from the switch to digital broadcasting. Nearly 1,100 licenses will be up for grabs.
Google agreed to give full credit card refunds rather than just credits to Google Video customers who bought download-to-own video from the recently shuttered site. Just to show its not evil, the company is even allowing users who have already claimed Google Checkout credits to keep them on top of the forthcoming credit card refunds.
New series and seasons (full eps only) released online since 14 August 2007:
”Drake & Josh” (Nick; iTunes): seasons 2 & 3
”The Hills” (MTV; Unbox, iTunes): current season (3)
”I Wanna Be a Soap Star” (SoapNet; iTunes): current season (4)

CBS restructured the sales team for its Interactive Unit to accommodate client and agency demand for cross platform buying. The move will focus on three areas: CBS SportsLine.com and CBS Mobile will be headed by Richard Calacci; the CBS Audience Network, CBS.com and CBSNews.com will be run by Kenneth Lagana; and Last.fm will be led by Kevin Menard, all of whom will hold the title of SVP/CBS Interactive. The trio will work closely with Stephen Snyder, COO/CBS Interactive.
MTV Entertainment upped Brad Winters to GM of GameTrailers.com and VP/MTV Entertainment Group. Brad, former Director of Business Development of GameTrailers, will relocate from San Francisco to Santa Monica and report to Jon Slusser, SVP/Spike Digital and Video Games.
Former VP/Multiplatform Music Programming Scott Reich was named VP/Programming for live music network Concert.TV. Scott will direct programming across the TV network and multiple platforms.
Video-sharing site Revver hired Marc Hernandez as VP/Advertising Sales. He will head the development of new customized sponsorship packages for advertisers and report to CEO Kevin Wells.
Music Choice named Rickie Ricardo as Manager/Latin Music. He will manage Latin content across Music Choice platforms, including its music channels, On Demand music network, online music website, and the Sprint and Cingular customers’ music service. Rickie has previously worked for Philadelphia’s WUBA, Miami’s La Mega WMGE, and New York’s WBLS. He will report to Lamonda Williams, Music Choice’s Director/Urban Programming.
Geico’s Cavemanscrib.com is one of the great interactive multimedia sites out there. Users are presumably attending a party at the Caveman’s place, albeit a little early. Click on the door to enter then amuse yourself by checking out the ipod, laptop, magazines, etc. You can even wander into the kitchen and listen to the voicemails on the phone. Geico recently added new content from the aftermath of the party (accessible by clicking “Snooze & Rejuve” on the iPhone on the homepage.) The site is no doubt helping to build buzz for ABC’s Cavemen comedy based on the campaign. Online Testing eXchange’s TV Dailies poll named it the second most anticipated show of the fall schedule among the 18-49 demo.
