Good morning, it’s Wednesday, August 20, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Flying in the face of conventional wisdom that online video should be short, CBSSports.com unveiled a new weekly Fantasy Football show to premiere Sept. 7 that will run a full 90-minutes in length, streaming live every Sunday morning of football season from 11-12:30 pm ET. The show will utilize segments from the cast of CBS’ NFL Today filtered for value to fantasy team owners, along with input from CBSSports.com Fantasy Football Senior Writers Jamey Eisenberg and Dave Richard. Going head to head against the 4 established Sunday morning football preview shows (on CBS, FOX, ESPN and NFL Network,) Fantasy Football Today will have its work cut out. Then again, none of the shows cater exclusively to fantasy football fans. The show will also benefit from wide distribution across the CBS Audience Network, including YouTube, AOL, MSN, Veoh, TV.com, Bebo, Joost and Fancast.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Good news for Mac users. CinemaNow, one of the oldest movie and TV show download sites, will finally be available for Mac users. The company signed an agreement to utilize Widevine Technologies‘ multi-format DRM solution to make CinemaNow download-to-own movies viewable on Windows, Mac and Linux machines. Pay-per-view titles will also be streamable using Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox or Opera browsers. iTunes still has a lock on content playable on the iPod, but such integrations should help loosen Apple’s lock on content options for Mac users nonetheless.
 
Drilling down to a single program brand on the platform for the first time, BBC Worldwide launched a new channel on YouTube dedicated to celebrity stunt fest Top Gear, now airing Monday nights on BBC America. The channel is a precursor to a dedicated website for the show geared toward U.S. audiences, scheduled to launch this fall. Top Gear clips are some of most popular on the general BBC Worldwide YouTube channel. (One featuring a test drive of tiny Arial Atom has been viewed over 3.8 million times.)
 
iaTV
(formerly ImaginAsian TV) entered into a licensing and sales deal with Los Angeles-based manga publisher TokyoPop to sell a range of digital media assets including anime series Initial D and Psychic Academy. iaTV’s ad sales team will represent sales activities for TokyoPop’s digital assets as part of the agreement including tokyopop.com, brand integration within original and user-generated video content, mobile advertising and other applications.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Introducing one of its first big content projects under AOL’s wing social networking service Bebo debuted Model.Live, a broadband reality series chronicling the lives of 3 IMG Models as they work the runways during Fashion Week in New York, London, Milan and Paris. As with past Bebo shows users are given the chance to interact with the models via video diaries, text messages, photos and blogs. The 12-episodes series, produced by IMG Media and sponsored by Express.com, will run simultaneously on Bebo and Vogue.tv, with new episodes appearing each Friday. (The Vogue.tv version features links to purchase Express.com apparel featured in the show.)
 
Former CEO and founder of CBS Sportsline.com Mike Levy has launched a new online Sports destination Open Sports with some familiar faces in front of the camera:

  • Indefatigable Sean Salisbury tackles NFL and college football analysis 7 days a week
  • Rob Shaw and Paul Charchian (Fanball.com) break down fantasy football news

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
There’s some good news for iPhone 3G users. Apple just shipped its second software update (version 2.02) promising to fix unspecified “bugs,” according to accompanying documentation. Apple is being coy about exactly what it fixes, but let’s hope it improves network efficiency so that the device doesn’t have to be charged every hour and a half. (Slight exaggeration.)
 
Maybe we can all squeeze some more life out of those standard def DVDs. Toshiba introduced a new DVD player with “extended Detail Enhancement (XDE), designed to deliver “near HD” picture quality from standard DVDs. The Toshiba XD-E500 launches with a suggested retail price of $149, quite a bit cheaper than the entry level Blu-ray players.
 
The first phone running on Google’s Android operating system is on its way. The FCC just approved T-Mobile’s HTC Dream, with an apparent release date of Nov. 10.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Contextual advertising firm ContextWeb unveiled a series of next generation algorithms resulting in deeper niche classification of web pages within the ASDAQ Exchange. The algorithms discover additional keywords for existing exchange content categories, increasing the number of keywords for categorization and defining new categories chosen by advertisers as those content topics become relevant.

Hulu continued its climb up Nielsen‘s VideoCensus chart measuring web video streams and downloads, ranking 8th in July with more than 105 million total streams delivered to an audience of 3.2 million + viewers. Hulu now offers some 250 TV shows and 100 full-length movies.

U.S. audiences aren’t the only ones turning to the web in record numbers for Olympics content. More than one-quarter of China’s world-leading 250 million online users visited Olympics-related content on a daily basis during the past week with an average of 65.8 million unique browsers tracked daily, according to a Nielsen Online analysis of ChinaRank data. Traffic to the official Olympics site Beijing2008.cn within China averaged 1.5 million unique visits per day. More than ½ million U.S. visitors on average are checking out the site, which has English, Spanish and French versions.
 
Business road warriors have driven wireless data card usage to record numbers over the past year in the U.S., according to Nielsen Mobile. More than 13 million PC users now connect to the internet using wireless cellular network cards, with 55% of these devices having been acquired in the past 12 months.
 
Encouraged by recent improved revenue results from professionally-themed social networking sites such as Linkedin, eMarketer is predicting steady growth in social networking business-to-business ad spending during the next few years, projecting last year’s $15 million to grow to $210 million in 2012.

Digital marketing agency imc² added to its New York-based creative group with the hiring of Bob Lukasik, former Executive Creative Director of G2 Interactive (formerly Grey Interactive), for the position of VP, Group Creative Director. Bob will report to Alan Schulman, SVP, Executive Creative Director.
 
Video and online production company M3 Television launched a new branded interstitial programming unit to create branded creative campaigns. M3 President Andy Meyers and his partners Roman Perez and Brad Baruh will oversee the unit.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
The road to success for inventors is littered with the corpses of failed ideas. But so many schemes fail because they cannot find the right application or are missing a piece another inventor may have been able to provide. EdisonNation.com is a crowdsourcing/social networking site helping would-be inventors to take their ideas from concept to product by soliciting advice from other designers and engineers. The site has also recruited retailers such as Home Depot and Spencer’s Gifts to use the site as a resource when looking for new products. Members submit ideas based on their submissions (which cost a nominal $25 to submit.) The site grew out of the plethora of good ides submitted to the PBS show Everyday Edisons, currently holding casting calls for Season 3.
