Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, August 1, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.

In the end, money talked. News Corp. earned the votes needed to win control of Dow Jones & Co. after a key Bancroft trust changed its mind and decided to accept the company’s $60/share offer, reported The Wall Street Journal. Part of the deal calls for a Bancroft family member to join the News Corp. board of directors to help insure Dow Jones’s journalistic independence. Check out the Journal’s website for more coverage of the deal you can shake a mouse at.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

FOX will premiere its next musical reality show The Next Great American Band (wt) with a special two-hour presentation on October 19 at 8p. From 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia North America, the show will air in its regular time slot on Fridays at 8p. Bands of all types will audition and judges will select 10 semifinalists who will perform weekly in front of a live studio audience. Much like the format of American Idol, viewers will vote for their favorite bands, narrowing the field down to the ultimate winner which will receive a recording contract with 19 Recordings.

Even before college students head back to campuses for real, ABC Family has issued a pick up of the back 10 episodes of season one of Greek. The additional episodes will air early next year. The show about sorority/fraternity life on the fictional Cyprus-Rhodes University campus airs Mondays at 9p on ABC Family and is also currently airing Fridays at 9p on ABC. The series is produced by Piller/Segan in association with the network.

The Legal Television Network (LTVN) has launched as a new VOD online source to showcase legal videos with practical advice on topics such as finance, insurance, employment, criminal justice and more at www.CLIENTELEVISION.com. LTVN has also started a network affiliate program, which will allow other web sites to offer hundreds of its Law on Demand and Case-in-Point segments at no charge.

Network Evening News Ratings Update: For the week of July 23, 2007 here are the ranking results:
ABC: 7.53 million total viewers/1.8/8 A25-54
NBC: 7.17 million total viewers/1.7/8 A25-54
CBS: 5.93 million total viewers/1.4/6 A25-54

Martha Stewart will have a new 30m crafting show, Martha Stewart Crafts on DIY Network beginning Thanksgiving Day November 22, through a distribution deal between the network and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. The show will be a compilation of various retooled crafting segments culled from a decade of content from the Martha Stewart Living TV series.

SPORTSKOOL, the free on demand sports network will debut two new series on August 7: Football with Doug Flutie and Baseball with Harold Reynolds. Both series will offer instruction to the viewers on each specific sport. 

This month, iN DEMAND Networks will introduce MOJO Mix, a new HD VOD service that will feature five hours of short and long-form content via Time Warner Cable. The free outlet, which will be available to any TWC affiliate who currently carries the MOJO network, will contain music videos, original episodes of MOJO HD series, various entertainment specials and shorts. Content will be refreshed each month. The service will also contain exclusive previews and behind-the-scenes and bonus footage.

VERSUS, the outdoor sports network which specializes in Whitetail programming, will present new and returning series throughout August starting this Friday at 7p. The new series includes:

  • The Bucks of Tecomate – featuring comedian Jeff Foxworthy and author David Morris as they track monster bucks.
  • The Federal Experience – viewers will watch as actor and former Army Ranger Tim Abell takes his novice hunting skills up to the next level.
  • Winchester Legends – host Ron Spomer takes viewers on historic hunts inspired by the Winchester brand.
  • Benelli on Assignment – travel around the world to the best game hunting areas with former outdoor writer and professional hunter Joe Coogan.

The network will also brink back these field sports series for all-new seasons: Winchester Whitetail Revolution, Benelli’s American Safari, Best and Worst of Tred Barta, Fly Fishing Masters and World of Beretta. And finally, VERSUS will embark on a new virtual online channel beginning September 4 which will offer tactics, tips, destinations and streaming video all about big bucks at www.versus.com/whitetail .

Jaime Saberito has been upgraded to Senior Director/Corporate Communications for Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel. She will continue to handle special events and trade and business press for all facets of the networks. Based in the New York office, Jaime reports to the East and West coast VPs/Corporate Communications, Jennifer Geisser and Nancy Carr.
 
IMG Entertainment has recruited the TV producing partners Bruce Beresford Redman and Rick Hurvitz to develop and produce non-scripted TV shows, branded programming and additional multi-platform content. Both will report to Olivier Gers, SVP/Global Head New Media and Co-Head IMG Entertainment and London-based Alastair Waddington, EVP/IMG Media and Co-Head IMG Entertainment.
 
Marlea Willis has joined VOOM HD Networks as VP/Public Relations to manage all consumer press efforts for VOOM in addition to promoting the brands of the various domestic and international channels. Marlea will report to Ellen Kroner, SVP/Corporate Communications and Marketing for Rainbow Media.
 
Mark Itkin, EVP/Worldwide Co-Head of Television at William Morris Agency has been named Chairman of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
 
Telepictures Productions has hired Tishan Waymire for the position of VP/Branded Entertainment and New Business. Tishan will supervise new business development efforts and head product integration and sponsorship opportunities for the company’s current roster of shows. She will also develop new sponsorship collaborations with advertisers across multiple platforms among other duties. She will report to Hilary Estey McLoughlin, President.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX was on fire Monday night winning with 2.9/9 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. ABC was #1 at 8p, as the Wife Swap repeat did a 2.1/7. FOX bombarded the competition during 9p as the new Hell’s Kitchen episode delivered a 4.0/11. Then at 10p, CBS did best with the CSI: Miami encore at 2.4/7.
