Wal-Mart is eager for some tablet action, but wants to keep as much money as it can in its own coffers. In an Apple store workaround that could become a new strategy for other content owners, the retail giant is slated to launch its video streaming service Vudu on iPads today, but not in an app form. Instead, users will need to visit Vudu.com on their tablets, then choose which device to view the programs on, enabling Wal-Mart-owned Vudu to keep all the revenue from shows bought and rented on the iPad. The move follows Apple’s recent requirement that publishers pay 30% of the price of any content sold through an app to Apple. Wal-Mart’s iPad strategy avoids that additional Apple toll. Wal-Mart said users can place a Vudu icon on their home screens as a shortcut. The Vudu store includes 20,000 movies and TV shows to buy or rent for instant viewing.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

NBC-owned WCAU-TV in Philadelphia linked up with Foursquare in a partnerships that brings local news to the location-based check-in service. Under the deal, users can track news and info from their community via Foursquare. WCAU will assign a reporter each day to check in through his or her smartphone while reporting on news throughout the day, including developments as the story unfolds. Down the road, WCAU will launch individual reporter accounts and offer news-based tips at popular check-in spots and locations around Philadelphia.

Content producers Content Media Corporation launched a spinoff series of its cult classic film Strictly Sexual on Hulu and Hulu Plus yesterday. The weekly series includes six half-hour episodes and builds off the plot of the film.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Video technology firm Thought Equity landed $25 million in venture funds from Shamrock Capital Advisors. Thought Equity will use the cash to build on its technology platform, expand its cloud storage infrastructure and serve clients around the world with its video footage licensing platform. 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Content discovery technology company Cooliris paired up with mobile ad firm Amobee to help brands serve up 3D ads on mobile devices and other emerging media platforms. Amobee will rely on Cooliris’ so-called “Immersive” 3D technology to create the new 3D ads for mobile devices. The 3D ads let users shift and move objects in the ad by touching the screen or by moving their mobile device back and forth. Cooliris recently powered a campaign for Samsung’s Galaxy SII smartphone on iPads.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Google‘s acquisition of Motorola’s Mobility earlier this week could have a far-reaching impact on the set-top box market, given that Motorola is one of the largest suppliers of TV set-top boxes to pay operators around the world, pointed out analysts at VideoNuze, IMS Research and other firms. “This deal allows Google to get closer to the video arena from the services side, versus the consumer side. Also, it allows Google to have direct presence at the front line of the world’s most competitive market for deploying pay-TV applications to tablets and handsets,” said IMS Research in a research note released yesterday. Will Richmond at VideoNuze also pointed out that the deal could help drive more partnerships between Google and service providers, giving the search giant the berth in the living room that it’s been seeking. “This could translate into improved product integration between Google’s software and Motorola’s hardware platforms that could give Google its best shot yet at getting into the living room,” Richmond said.

4A‘s President and CEO Nancy Hill spoke out against new ICANN rules (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) which could limit the way domain names are assigned by letting applicants claim virtually any word as a domain name. “These changes would cost brand owners billions of dollars, severely, if not irreparably, diluting the value of trusted and respected brand names, as well as abrogate the good work 4A’s members have done on behalf of their clients,” Hill said in a statement.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Orbit Media launched a kids’ storybook app for “Cowboys & Aliens: The Kids” and will donate a portion of the revenue to the charity Starlight Children’s Foundation to benefit seriously ill children. The storybook app is based on the same graphic novel that spawned the recently released movie Cowboys & Aliens. The app is now available in the Apple App store with an Android version to follow this month. 

Looking for the best-kept secrets of the Big Apple from an insider? Marketing communications firm Maloney & Fox introduced a free iPad app featuring the best local eateries, favorite running routes, and most romantic but not sappy spots in the city. An iPhone version releases in the fall.

Facebook Studio, the page on Facebook designed to share best practices for Facebook marketing from agency pros, is slated to launch a live Web series today at 11 a.m. pacific time called Creatives Talk. The show features interviews with creative thought leaders from fashion, TV, advertising, storytelling and more discussing their creative processes.
