~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Fall premiere dates for new and returning series announced by Comedy Central:

  • Tosh.0 fall season premiere set for September 20 at 10p.
  • Workaholics second season debuts September 20 at 1030p.
  • South Park opens its 15th season on October 5 at 10p.
  • Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time premieres a sophomore season starting October 5 at 1030p.
  • Gabriel Iglesias Presents Stand-Up Revolution, the series premiere is October 6 at 10p.
  • Acquired comedy series 30 Rock makes its cable television premiere on the network starting September 19 airing weeknights at 7p and 730p.

A second season of MTV’s scripted comedy series Awkward is on tap for next year.  The series, reflecting the conflict, chaos and humor of teenage life, will continue season one on Tuesday nights at 11p with seven more episodes.  Since the series’ premiere on July 19, Awkward has had 1.7 million total viewers each week.

Showtime added two more episodes to its baseball reality series The Franchise which brings the order to eight total episodes.  The Franchise, chronicling the San Francisco Giants is averaging 760,000 weekly viewers in its first season. 

On Sunday, Food Network aired the finale of Food Network Star at 9p which posted a 1.9 rating with A25-54 and an average of 4.2 million total viewers.  Following at 10p, The Great Food Truck Race, produced by RelativityREAL, LLC premiered with an average of 2.0 million total viewers.  Beginning this Sunday, The Great Food Truck Race will air in its regular time slot of 9p. 

Season two of Oxygen’s fantasy hair competition series Hair Battle Spectacular premiered with 488,000 among A18-49 and 331,000 A18-34 viewers.

MTV‘s Teen Wolf finished its freshman season with 2.1 million total viewers and a season high 1.9 among P12-34.  MTV has reupped the series which will return in 2012 with 12 new episodes.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

HISTORY cast Bill Paxton (Big Love, Tombstone) for its upcoming scripted miniseries The Hatfields and McCoys.  Paxton will play the role of Randall McCoy joining Kevin Costner who will play the role of “Devil” Anse Hatfield.  Kevin Reynolds (Red Dawn, The Count of Monte Cristo) is also on board to direct the miniseries.  Leslie Greif’s Thinkfactory Media is producing the project.  Sony Pictures Television distributes the miniseries. 

The Soprano’s alum Dominic Chianese will appear on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire in a six-episode run.  In the period drama, Chianese will play Leander Whitlock, a contemporary of Commodore Louis Kaestner (Dabney Coleman).  The second season of Boardwalk Empire will premiere September 25 on HBO. 

Several casting updates for primetime shows on NBC:

  • Nick Cannon, host of NBC’s America’s Got Talent nabbed a recurring role on the new comedy Up All Night.  Cannon will play Calvin, a lively talk show emcee whose popularity irritates co-host Ava (Maya Rudolph).  Jennifer Hall (Nip/Tuck, CSI: Miami) will also join the cast in the recurring role as Missy, Ava’s unconfident assistant.  Up All Night debuts September 14 and stars Christina Applegate and Will Arnett. 
  • Paula Pell landed the role of Ron Swanson’s mother on Parks and Recreation.  Pell will play the third Tammy in Ron’s life as Mama Swanson will appear early in season four along with Ron’s never-before-seen scary first wife, Tammy 1 played by Patricia Clarkson. 
  • NBC’s upcoming The Playboy Club tapped Cassidy Freeman (Smallville) in a recurring role playing Frances Dunhill, a Chicago socialite who begins a “for show” only relationship with Nick Dalton (Eddie Cibrian), reports TVLine

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:   ABC secured a narrow win Saturday with a 0.9/3 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX was the winner at 8p with the average of two Cops rerun episodes at 0.9/4 with ABC’s Harry Potter movie next at 0.8/3.  ABC magically appeared in first place during 9p with more of its Movie of the Week at 0.9/3 while a two-way tie occurred for #2 between CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery repeat and Univision’s Sabado Gigante at 0.7/2 each.  ABC polished off a final win with the conclusion of the Harry Potter movie at 1.0/3 and CBS’ second 48 Hours Mystery rebroadcast was second at 0.9/3.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS had the winning lineup Sunday at 2.0/5 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  NBC’s Dateline topped the list at 7p with a 1.2/4 followed by FOX’s repeat comedies American Dad and Bob’s Burgers with an average of 1.0/3.  At 8p, a repeat broadcast of 60 Minutes on CBS won with an 1.8/5 while FOX with the average of encore episodes of The Simpsons and Family Guy and Univision’s Pequenos Gigantes shared #2 at 1.6/5 apiece.  CBS remained in #1 during 9p with Big Brother at 2.7/7 and Univision’s Pequenos Gigantes was a solo in second place at 1.8/5 and ABC’s CMA Music Festival was third at 1.7/4 and in fourth place was the average of FOX’s double premiere episodes of In the Flow with Affion Crockett at 1.2/3 (the debut episode at 9p delivered a 1.3/3).  Then at 10p, ABC’s CMA Music Festival did best with an 1.8/5 and CBS’ Same Name was next at 1.5/4.

FOX was the champ during 8p with Hell’s Kitchen at 2.9/9 followed by ABC’s Bachelor Pad at 2.1/7.  FOX retained its #1 status through 9p with MasterChef at 2.4/6 with the second hour of ABC’s Bachelor Pad staying in second place at 2.3/6.  Competition was tight at 10p and Univision won with Don Francisco Presenta at 1.1/3 with CBS’ Hawaii Five-O a step behind at 1.0/3.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Mary Ellen Iwata appointed VP/Original Content Development with The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC).  In her new role beginning August 29, Mary Ellen will head the daily management of development and production of non-scripted series and specials for The Weather Channel.  Mary Ellen will also work with weather.com and mobile platforms in an effort to develop cross-platform efforts for television.  Mary Ellen will be based in New York reporting to Michael Dingley, SVP/Content and Development, TWCC who is based in Atlanta.

Arts culture network, Ovation hired Oscar Ordaz as Director/Distribution where he will be in charge of subscriber growth in addition to the expansion of Ovation’s hi-def and VOD services.  Based in Austin, Oscar reports to Dan Casciato, VP/National Accounts. 

Jeff Browning will soon join Univision Communications Inc. as SVP/Sales for Univision News beginning September 6.  In this newly-minted position based in New York, Jeff will supervise news sales and strategy for all Univision platforms.  Prior to this appointment, Jeff was SVP of Univision Television Group Sales.
