Cynopsis: Sports
08.14.13
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 14, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
If you didn’t make our Women of Action event last night at the Yale Club, you missed a series of terrific, frank discussions on the stigmas and relationships between women and sports. Thanks to everyone who attended last night, especially our speakers and moderators, who simply nailed it. With a focus on promoting women in athletics and sports media, speakers tackled the state of the business from the top down. Capping the evening was the presentation of our Impact Award to Stacey Allaster, Chairman & CEO, WTA. “I am living the dream thru forehand and backhand,” she told the audience, before adding, “Pressure is a privilege as Billie Jean King used to say.”
A few other favorite lines…
NHL’s Susan Cohig: Women make decisions differently. They want to try things on and see how it looks. Manufacturers have made the commitment and the growth has followed.
Octagon’s Mary Lobbestael: The key to growth is to engage people where they’re passionate.
MLS’ Maribeth Towers: It is condescending to assume women aren’t as passionate. Our most avid, passionate fans are both men and women.
BTN’s Erin Harvego: Title IX did a lot for women and they have been active participants and remained involved in sports.
NBC Sports’ Michelle Beadle: I know one day I will get fired for something I tweet.
IndyCar driver Bia Figueiredo: I tell women which car to buy.
LeadDog Marketing Group’s Donna Goldsmith: Women by nature are all about “we” so we need to learn to brand ourselves in order to stand out.
Campus Insiders’ Bonnie Bernstein: We are a barter society. Starwood hotels for example. I got upgraded for tweeting about it.
Pac-12 Enterprises’ Lydia Murphy-Stephans: Young men are more accustomed to women having influence so they hire women with no issues.
Turner Sports’ Christina Miller: Self-confidence comes from a team sports family background. Turner’s exec team says that the best idea wins. It is based on facts, not about ego or credit.
NBA International’s Heidi Ueberroth: I was 24, doing ad sales in New York City. It was daunting. But now it’s my favorite thing. You have to get out there and participate and engage.
Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic’s Rebecca O’Sullivan Schulte: You need to be passionate and have a mentor. I have been lucky!
ISC’s Lesa France Kennedy: It was all men when I first started and it has taken time for women to start working with and supporting other women.
College football fans can now get to know just who they’ll be spending their autumn afternoons with. ESPN has announced the commentator pairings that will work this fall across ABC and the ESPN family of outlets. In their eighth season together, Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit will be working the Saturday Night Football shift with reporter Heather Cox on ABC. Some faces in new places include Rod Gilmore shifts from Friday nights to Saturday afternoons on ABC and ESPN while Danny Kanell takes over the Friday gig. Kelly Stouffer moves to join Anish Shroff on the weekly ESPNU Saturday afternoon game. Maria Taylor moves to join Joe Tessitore and Matt Millen on the second season of an additional package of Saturday night games, primarily on ESPN. Shannon Spake will work a full season of college football games for the first time, joining Sean McDonough and Chris Spielman on an ABC Saturday afternoon telecast.
SportsCenter anchor Linda Cohn and reporter/host Shannon Spake locked in extensions with ESPN in new multi-year agreements. Cohn, who joined ESPN in 1992 will remain a premier SportsCenter presence while Spake, who joined in 2006 continues to serve as on-site reporter for college basketball and football telecasts, as well as serve as NASCAR pit reporter and studio host.
Exiting the company, however, is Hugh Douglas. Sports Illustrated reports that ESPN has ditched Douglas, who was a regular panelist on the network’s Numbers Never Lie show. Word hit the Internet recently, thanks to Deadspin and The Big Lead, that Douglas and Numbers host Michael Smith had an alleged confrontation at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention and Career Fair in Orlando
FOX Sports 1 continues to flesh out programming, announcing the debut of The Jones and Moseley Show on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 6p. The series will spotlight “the most exciting finishes, record-breaking performances and pioneering events currently shaping today’s global sports landscape.”
ESPN locked in times and networks for its upcoming Big 12/SEC Challenge beginning with the first game on Thursday, Nov. 14, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 10 games. The first year of the Big 12/SEC Challenge will play out over six weeks, wrapping up with the Oklahoma/Texas A&M game on Saturday, Dec. 21 on ESPNU. Highlights include South Carolina/Oklahoma State on Dec. 6 at 9:30; on ESPNU, Kentucky/Baylor at Arlington on Dec. 6 on ESPN, and Kansas/Florida on Dec. 10 at 7p on ESPN.
Meanwhile, ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 will combine to present all 32 games of the 2013 Little League World Series presented by Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes from Williamsport, Pa., August 15-25. ABC takes on five games including the International Championship and the United States Championship on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 12:30p and 3:30p respectively. ABC will then broadcast the Little League World Series Championship on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 3p. Baseball Tonight’s Karl Ravech and Nomar Garciaparra join Sunday Night Baseball analyst Orel Hershiser and reporter Jaymee Sire for all five ABC games, including the World Series Championship, United States Championship and International Championship.
ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM and the Dallas Mavericks extended their radio play-by-play agreement for five years. The pair has been linked since 2001 and this contract will take them through the 2017-18 season.
Sportsman Channel announced that Record Buck episode on Full Draw Adventures featuring a record sized whitetail buck, nicknamed “Wild Thing” earned the show’s highest rating of the season, drawing a .3 for both M18-49 and M2554.
See you this morning for the Cynopsis Sports Business Summit. Sessions start at 9p.
