New digital platforms continue to chip away at the windows once exclusively enjoyed by pay TV outlets. Online and snail mail movie rental service Netflix signed an exclusive 5 year deal with Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM’s EPIX service that will make new titles available to Netflix subscribers via video streaming an aggressive 90 days after their premium PPV and SVOD debuts. The deal makes Netflix, which is up to about 15 million subscribers, a valid competitor to traditional premium cable channels. It is expected to yield EPIX close to $1 billion in licensing fees, helping the new venture reach its goal of breaking even by the end of 2011 despite not yet achieving carriage on many of pay TV’s largest distributors, per the LATimes. The deal, which won’t prevent EPIX from selling titles to online PPV services such as iTunes and Amazon’s Video On Demand service, takes effect on Sept. 1.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
This one’s for The Dude. IPTV service provider NeuLion has partnered with its latest sports group, The Professional Bowlers Association, to power live interactive video on its official site, PBA.com, continuing under the Xtra Frame brand. Due to launch in Sept., in time for the PBA World Series the following month, premium and subscription services will feature live streams of PBA events, highlights, chat and exclusive couch programming. A video syndication player that will be offered to website providers targeting bowling fans.
 
CBS Interactive
completed a relaunch of its business-themed BNET site, simplifying the interface and adding a dozen new writers, including leadership guru Marshall Goldsmith and his daughter, Kelly Goldsmith, of Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. The site will now feature more than 1,000 exclusive, original pieces per month.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Spanfeller Media Group has completed a round of initial funding led by SoftBank Capital NY, followed by Greenhill SAVP, RRE Ventures and Lerer Media Ventures, in addition to a group of angel investors. The new company’s launch site, which will focus on food, is the first in a series of topic-specific verticals. The company is headed by former Forbes.com CEO Jim Spanfeller with Mike Perlis serving as Chairman.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Entertainment Weekly magazine is bringing back use of Microsoft 2D tags for its Annual Fall Movie Preview out on Aug. 20. The tags, which allow smartphone users to wave their handsets over the page to be taken to the proper YouTube page, were used for EW’s Summer Movie Preview and received over 80,000 scans.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Google‘s offices in Seoul, South Korea were raided by police, who are concerned the company’s Street View cameras are spying on Korean citizens illegally, according to reports. Google, which is already facing lawsuits and investigations over its Street View data collection practices in a number of countries, began deploying the cars late last year in a bid to launch its Street View service in South Korea later this year. Google also announced plans to introduce Street View in 20 German Cities by the end of this year.
 
Membership-required retail outlet Sam’s Club will install free Wi-Fi powered by AT&T in all 500 of its stores by November to help showcase internet-enabled TVs and the apps they feature.
 
Digital messaging software firm Waterfall Mobile, the company behind “The Cove” texting campaign unfurled during the movie’s Oscar acceptance speech, has partnered with non-profit mobile services provider mGive, to offer mobile giving to its clients. PETA is the first client to sign up, launching a campaign called Elephants Never Forget to run in conjunction with Vans Warped Tour 2010, enabling concert goers to donate $5 via text message.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
The market for “Hybrid” web-to-TV set top boxes that bring apps and widgets to TV programming, along with advanced advertising, will reach $1.3 billion worldwide by 2014, according to market researcher In-Stat. Hybrid-capable set-top boxes are shipping today, but only a small percentage are using the capabilities, according to a new report. Digital terrestrial boxes will be the hybrid-box growth leader, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 42% between 2010 and 2014. Western Europe will be the hot bed for development of hybrid services, as well as the leader for early hybrid set-top box shipments.
 
Half of mobile users in the U.S. (about 85.5 million users) will have the ability to access the mobile web by 2013 via browsers and apps, according to a revised forecast from eMarketer. Recent estimates from Nielsen place smartphone penetration at 25% in the U.S. (up from 23% the previous quarter and 16% from a year ago.)

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
One of the promises of mobile video networks is the ability to power professional video uplinks. Yes, this could mean avoiding costly satellite truck rolls for broadcasters. Vomodo is one a handful of companies working on mobile backpack solution that utilizes proprietary adaptive bit rate streaming software and up to 6 cell network air cards to upload broadcast-quality live video from a remote location. (Vomodo CEO Pete Raustein says the unit has been successfully tested in extreme conditions, including on the slopes of Mammoth Mountain and on the back of a motorcycle bombing down the road at 70 mph.) The unit, which Comcast‘s Entertainment Group is taking delivery of next Monday, sells for between $13k – $15k, or can be leased for between $2-$2.5k, including CDN fees.

Cablevision Systems Corp. has upped James A. Blackley to EVP/Corporate Engineering and Technology. James will continue to oversee the company’s engineering and technology, Enterprise IT and e-media departments, continuing to report to COO Tom Rutledge.  
 
JP Clement, previously Co-Founder & COO of Karma Media Labs and a VP at Fanscape, launched The Marketing Distillery, an analytics, ROI-based Social Media Marketing Agency focused on online engagement. He will oversee a core team of social media and creative experts as Chief Analytics Officer.


 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
TBD.com is the new Metro Washington D.C. blog-style website launched by Allbritton Communications, (owner of Politico.com), which replaces the company’s local ABC affiliate station site as well as the site of its 24-hour cable news channel, News Channel 8. Put together under the direction of GM Jim Brady (who also consulted on the design of Politico.com), the site is a fresh take on a local news portal, utilizing generous white space and clever user interface ideas to help readers find what their looking for. Top stories are prioritized and labeled by how many minutes ago they were posted, next to graphics of gridlocked roads. Type in your zip code to pull up stories pertaining to your community. A staff of about 50, including 20 reporters and 6 “community engagement” team members, will contribute and aggregate hyperlocal content, using social networks to keep in touch. So far more than 1,700 people are following @TBD on Twitter, along with 400+ Facebook friends and the nearly 200 Foursquare pals. The TBD Community Network pulls in content from neighborhood blogs. The station has submitted iPhone and Android apps for approval that adopt the same straightforward visual look. The idea is to keep the conversation with the community going wherever it may be; even the name of the site (To Be Determined…) communicates this. (TBD Editor Erik Wemple is credited with naming the site, as he signed each of his emails with “Editor of TBD” when the team was still scouring for a good URL.)
