Cablevision has found another TV Everywhere-style option. The cable operator said its customers can now watch live TV and VOD via an app for the iPhone and iTouch, in addition to the iPad app that launched in April. The Optimum App allows for live viewing of more than 300 channels, as well as DVR management, interactive guide access, and VOD viewing. Plus, the app now also functions as a virtual remote control. The operator said it has the rights to deliver programming to iPhones, iPods, iPads and other devices in the home. So far, the iPad app for live TV viewing has been downloaded more than 200,000 times since it was introduced in April.
Hulu plans to launch the third season of Web original series The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers on August 11, featuring Glee regular Harry Shum Jr. The show is produced in partnership with Agility Studios with Paramount Digital Entertainment distributing.
Star Trek fans, rejoice. The panels at the 45th anniversary Las Vegas Star Trek convention will be live streamed on StarTrek.com August 11-14. The streaming is made possible via a deal between CBS Consumer Products, Creation Entertainment and TVoop.com. Panels are $6.99.
Digital TV network Revision3 launched new show Ask Jay, featuring tips and advice for aspiring entrepreneurs from Revision3 founder Jay Adelson. The show will run twice a week and Adelson will answer viewers questions in each episode.
Over-the-top TV technology firm Boxee has released a version of its service for the iPad. Boxee also introduced a so-called “lightweight app” to stream video files from a computer in nearly any format over to the iPad without needing to convert or sync files or devices.

The fast food chain Taco Bell has added a new component to its mobile marketing; the food retailer is now using QR codes on packaging to offer exclusive MTV content to its customers. The mobile campaign runs through Sept. 4 in support of the VMA Awards on MTV.
Online media company Casale Media has moved into the real-time bidding business with the launch of premium ad exchange casaleX. Casale said its more than 3,000 premium publisher partners can use casaleX to find brand-safe, high-quality placements for ads online with real-time bidding.
U.S. mobile users are spending 54% more time on the mobile Web, and 29% more time watching videos on mobile devices than a year ago, according to a new study from Yahoo. Interestingly, one-third of all time spent on mobile devices is in the home.
About 55% of consumers who read magazines on tablets said they notice the ads, compared to 41% who notice them on eReaders, according to the study conducted by GfK MRI’s Starch Advertising Research.
Fox nabbed the most social media mentions in the month of July with a 27% share of social TV voice thanks to Glee, followed by CBS at 26%, NBC at 25%, ABC at 17% and CW at 5%, said social buzz tracking service Trendrr. CBS saw a 12% jump in July in its social share of TV chatter, followed by Fox with a 4% bump, then ABC and CW at 3% each, while NBC dropped 22% in July, due to The Voice completing its run in June. Among cable networks, VH1 was tops in cable social share, followed by HBO.
The nation’s stock woes gave CNBC a boost Monday as the financial news network reported its highest ratings ever for unique visitors and page views across CNBC.com, mobile platforms, and Apple and Android apps. CNBC.com logged more than 2.3 million daily unique visitors on August 8, a doubling of its daily average, while its mobile traffic also doubled.
TV technology firm Clearleap partnered with consumer electronics giant LG Electronics to deliver programming via broadband to LG Smart TVs without the need for a set-top box, the companies said.
Social marketing platform company Vitrue linked up with Clear Channel Radio to manage the social media communications for Clear Channel’s 850 radio stations.
Media company Tribune Co. is said to be developing its own touchscreen tablet for subscribers, according to a CNN report. The Android-based tablet would feature the owner’s hometown newspaper, the story said, and will be offered for free or at a subsidized price when people sign up for extended subscriptions.
MTV plans to release a co-viewing iPhone app WatchWith next week for companion mobile viewing and interaction for its shows. WatchWith is similar to the VH1 Co-Star app.
Weather service AccuWeather rolled out an Android version of its weather app, with hourly updates, social sharing and interactive Google maps included.
The Smithsonian Channel introduced its first Android app that includes some full-length episodes as well as hundreds of clips and facts about history, science and music.
Mobile technology company Myxer appointed William J. Brown to VP of Marketing, effective immediately. Myxer operates an ad-supported mobile entertainment site.

The new site is a joint project of MTV and the Web site DailyFeats. Users can win a trip for two to the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.
