Cynopsis: DIGITAL

4/4/07

Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, April 4, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Google has signed an agreement with Echostar Communications to begin testing an auction-based ad sales system to sell a portion of the ad inventory from 125 of its national cable TV networks. Marketers and agencies will be able to access their existing AdWords accounts and choose to open a separate TV advertising account, selecting which network to buy, across multiple dayparts. The advertiser bids for inventory on a CPM basis in a blind auction; they only find out what the winning bid was if they win the auction. The system will include innovative features such as second-by-second commercial ratings and a recommendation engine to suggest a marketing plan based on the demo an advertiser is trying to reach. The service is expected to be up and running in a few months. The initial trial will track and report live impressions, but Google plans to add DVR playback measurement in the future.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

MySpace will hold its own presidential primary on January 1and 2, 2008, asking every registered MySpace user to vote for their favorite candidate. The site will begin with a series of monthly straw poles next month to see where the candidates stand among the community. Social networking has been a central part of the primaries this year, with many campaigns devoting large staffs to keeping their pages updated with fresh videos and messages. The hipper candidates allow you to sign up for multiplatform content pushes, such as updates on your cell phone. Democrats have far more “friends” than Republicans in the early going. Here’s where the candidates stand so far on MySpace. Go to https://impact.myspace.com to access MySpace’s Impact Channel.

Barak Obama: 90,452 friends
John Edwards: 17,070 friends
Hillary Clinton: 7,677 friends
Mitt Romney: 4,077 friends
John McCain: 3,737 friends
Joe Biden: 1,433 friends
Rudy Giuliani:  His is private! You must invited to see his profile.

NATPE is launching the LATV Festival to showcase the multiplatform work of local producers. The event will take place in and around Hollywood and be held concurrently with this year’s Producers Boot Camp from July 25-27. Wednesday is LATV Digital Day, showcasing the latest portals, channels, platforms and internet celebrities.

Travel guide publisher Lonely Planet launched a social networking site www.lonelyplanet.tv , offering travelers a place to upload videos and photos, share blogs, access forums and map travel destinations. The site has also organized six different video channels to help find what you’re looking for. The classified section could be a great resource if the site takes off. Reality Digital is providing the video hosting platform.

Joost has its first commercial out on YouTube. It is kind of what you might expect from a Scandinavian ad agency very somber and rational. Maybe they should have at least gotten video blogger geriatric1927 to star! Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IcwG0jUFxU.

Miss out on the real estate boom? You may want to try your luck in the virtual world. Www.weblo.com has created a virtual market for the sale of online replicas of cities, states, famous properties and internet domain names. Some speculators are making out like bandits, according to Business 2.0 Magazine. One guy bought the Empire State Building for a buck and sold it for $250. A lawyer paid $2,000 for a webpage devoted to California. You can also choose to hold on to what you buy and make money off of it by selling ads on the site. Weblo has attracted 10,000 speculators so far, and expects to earn $10 million in revenue by the end of 2007.

Fox Reality signed its first-ever mobile deal with Amp’d Mobile to offer clips, interviews and reality news updates from its shows to the Amp’d Live service. Content from Reality Remix, The Academy, Solitary 2.0 and Rob & Amber: Against the Odds will be featured. The service is scheduled to go live April 16.

Sundance Channel.com is running a user-generated video contest asking viewers to submit their own echo-solutions. The contest is to promote its new original eco-themed series Big Ideas for a Small Planet, premiering April 17. Submissions are limited to 1-minute in length and will be narrowed down to the best 25 films. Visitors will then vote to narrow the field to five, and a panel of environmental experts will pick the best of the five. The winner gets $10,000 and the 1-year lease of a Lexis hybrid.

CBS is running its own viral video campaign on You Tube, encouraging viewers to upload 15-second tributes to Bob Barker, who is celebrating his 50th year on television and getting ready to step down as host of The Price is Right after 35 years. CBS Interactive will select five clips from http://www.youtube.com/group/15seconds to broadcast during the Bob Barker special, airing May 17 at 8 pm ET/PT.

Bravo announced traffic to its stable of web sites increased dramatically during the first quarter of 2007 compared to 1Q06. Microsites for individual shows such as Top Chef and Real Housewives of Orange County experienced triple-digit growth, according to tracking by Omniture and Urchin.

Calling all college students!  Cynopsis Weekender College Edition sponsored by Greek, A New ABC Family Original Series coming in July, is coming back on April 26, 2007, and if your essay on television is one of the four published, you’ll be paid $350! We’re looking for 350 word editorials on the subject of television from current college students all around the world.  The four most insightful, original, humorous and/or well-written pieces will be included in this special College Edition of Weekender , and only those four will be paid $350.  College Professors, moms and dads – encourage your students to participate!  All entries should be emailed no later than midnight on Friday, April 20th to me at [email protected], SUBJECT: Weekender College Edition. Students – be sure to include your name, age, college, college year, and major (if you know it), and how you can be contacted.   Good luck!

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

A day after Apple announced its iTunes deal with EMI, the European Commission confirmed it has opened an antitrust probe into iTunes to study whether or not the company violates territorial sales restrictions within the EU. Apple currently restricts downloads from the iTunes store to customers using credit cards issued by a bank within their country of origin, according the AP. However prices for songs vary from vary country to country. Apple has also been battling with European consumer rights groups in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Scandinavia over protections that limit iTunes tracks from being played on rival companies’ mp3 players.

Internet tracking company ComScore registered for an IPO. Credit Suisse Securities will act as sole manager for the offering.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Telescopic advertising service provider etc.tv commercially deployed its Advertising on Demand system on Montreal-based Videotron‘s VOD platform. The system allows digital cable subscribers to link from traditional TV commercials to long-form on demand spots, providing additional information about the products and services being advertised. National advertisers such as GM, P&G, Unilever and Molson have been participating in a trial of the service, initially deployed in Spring of 2006. The service will be rolled out across multiple systems in Canada in the coming months, and etc.tv is in talks with U.S.-based MSOs and advertisers to deploy it in the U.S.

MLB.com is inserting ads in its premium live webcasts and has already signed some 45 advertisers, who are paying $15 to $35 per1,000 views, according to Investors.com. It is a rare double-revenue stream model, as the site charges users $119 for a season subscription. MLB.com ended last season with 1.3 million paid subscribers for its fee-based audio and video services.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

As we count down to the American Idol finale, I wanted to offer up an Idol themed site while it’s still on a roll. You may have already heard of it as it’s been credited with actually effecting voting on the show. www.VoteForTheWorst.com was launched by Dave Della Terza to encourage viewers to vote for the rejects that Fox normally wants to weed out. This year the site has been championing Seattlite Sanjaya Malakar the kid with the “ponyhawk” hair. Despite questionable singing skills, he’s managed to survive this long. Howard Stern has been plugging the site on his show, helping to drive unique visitors up to 6 million a day!

A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
