Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 3, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With ratings up on TV, NCAA March Madness Live, managed by Turner Sports, also continues to set high marks, setting records for video streams and engagement across digital platforms for the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. The platform has drawn 45 million live video streams, for a markup of 158% vs. 2012 tournament to date, with more than12.6 million hours of live video consumed. The 2013 NCAA Tournament recorded 12.6 million hours of live video streaming, which represents a 201% increase from 2012. Mobile’s share of live video consumption has increased from 43% share on Thursday, March 21, to a 68% share on Sunday, March 31.
CBS Sports Network is gearing up for the 2013 Masters with the upcoming series Masters on the Range that will come from the Tournament Practice Range of Augusta National Golf Course. Starting next Monday at noon, the series will run through the following Sunday ahead of the final round of the tournament. The network will also replay CBS Sports’ live coverage of the third and final rounds for the first time, starting Saturday, April 13 at 3p and Sunday, April 14.
Last Saturday’s Boxing After Dark on HBO, featuring Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado, scored 1.2 million viewers, to mark a 45% spike in viewership over the first Rios vs. Alvarado encounter last October. The channel looks to keep the momentum going on April 13 with the title unification bout between Nonito Donaire and Guillermo Rigondeaux at 11p.
NBC Sports Network is set to cover the Pittsburgh Penguins’ hunt to break the NHL record for consecutive wins with tonight’s matchup against the New York Rangers at 7:30p, which would tie the achievement if they win. Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, Eddie Olczyk, and Pierre McGuirewill call the game.
Mike Francesa will continue his run at Sports Radio WFAN, inking a long term agreement that will keep him host of PM drive (weekdays, 1p-6:30p) for years to come. Francesa joined WFAN in 1987. As part of the deal, Francesa will also bring his Sunday morning The NFL Now show to CBS Sports Radio beginning this fall where it will be available on WFAN from 9a-noon.
The University of Tulsa is officially on-board as the newest member of the he soon-to-be-renamed Big East Conference, effective July 1, 2014. The school departs Conference USA to make the move.
Tennis Channel revealed that it has nabbed rights to re-air the Sony Open Tennis men’s singles final between Andy Murray and David Ferrer this Thursday, April 4, at 9p and midnight. The match originally ran on CBS this past Sunday, before the network had to cut away to NCAA Tournament action and the match concluded on Tennis Channel.
On the local front, Chicago’s Comcast SportsNet scored a ratings record for its White Sox Season Opener, drawing a 3.42 household rating, according to Nielsen, for Monday’s clash against the Royals. The game drew around 119,180 households and earned a 4.12 peak rating during the 4p quarter-hour.
Comcast Hometown Network, covering Northern and Central California, announced that it will televise 31 live minor league baseball games from the California League and the Pacific Coast League this year. Telecasts begin tomorrow at 7p with the Fresno Grizzlies season opener against the Tacoma Rainiers with all games this season originating from either Chukchansi Park (home of the Fresno Grizzlies or San Jose Municipal Stadium (home of the San Jose Giants).
Atlantic Broadband announced that the company will carry beIN SPORT for viewers in Miami Beach, South Miami and northern Dade on both English and Spanish-language channels.

NASCAR is revving up for its month-long NASCAR Green initiative leading up to Earth Day and Arbor Day with two programs designed to help create more sustainable behavior within the sport. NASCAR Race to Green will look to mobilize teams, tracks, drivers, Official NASCAR Partners, and most importantly fans, around the theme of protecting and preserving our environment, while the NASCAR Green Clean Air Tree Planting Program Delivered by UPS will plant trees to absorb carbon emissions equivalent to all of the racing in NASCAR’s three national series for the entire season. In addition, race sponsors will take part. Ford will plant one tree for every lap a Ford driver leads in either NNS or NSCS race during the month of April; Freightliner will plant 300 trees for every Freightliner driver that wins a NSCS race during the month of April; and Green Earth Technologies will plant one tree for every NSCS green flag lap during the month.
ESPN and Turkish Airlines announced a production partnership and multi-platform sponsorship deal surrounding upcoming docu-series Basketball Capitals presented by Turkish Airlines that profiles the “culture and passion for basketball within the world’s most iconic cities.” The partnership will take audiences to Madrid, Berlin, Istanbul, and Athens (all served by Turkish Airlines) to showcase European sports via first-hand accounts and profiles of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague teams including Real Madrid, Alba Berlin, Besiktas JK Istanbul, Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul, Galatasaray Medical Park, Anadolu Efes Istanbul, Olympiacos Piraeus, and Panathinaikos Athens.

MLB Advanced Media started the new season on a high note, revealing that the MLB At Bat mobile app was accessed six million times on Opening Day, a record-setting total more than double the previous record. In addition, At Bat and MLB.TV combined to deliver three million live streams, a mark that is 20% higher than the Opening Day record set in 2012.
Sports journalist Bonnie Bernstein is set to become the new face of Campus Insiders, a digital sports network developed by IMG College and Silver Chalice. The group hired Bernstein to serve as VP of Content & Brand Development where she will now host a daily show from Chicago’s Harpo Studios that will offer opinion and news via CampusInsiders.com. Bernstein also will bring in talent and develop programming for the outlet.
