Cynopsis: Kids!
04.03.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 3, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Today’s Top Headlines
We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…

DHX Media is continuing its OTT deal-making. Nascent dedicated children’s SVOD service Kidoodle.TV has picked up 800 hours of DHX’s premium and catalog titles for its North American service, which is slated to launch this summer. DHX titles in the agreement include Inspector Gadget, Rastamouse, Strawberry Shortcake and Busytown Mysteries. Additionally, Qwik Entertainment licensed 225 half-hours of programming for its SVOD service in India. Other new DHX deals include: Nordisk Film Production licensed SVOD rights to Inspector Gadget, non-exclusively in the Nordic territory; Watchever, the Vivendi company that recently launched a SVOD service in Germany, secured additional DHX titles including Franny’s Feet and Hurray for Huckle; Triplay Digital Content licensed shows for VOD including Cailou and Arthur for its DSTVO service in South Africa.

Proving once again that hidden camera hijinks never get old, Zodiak Kids and Marblemedia will develop a franchise around The Foundation’s children’s prank-game show series Cambushed. The show features kid contestants who predict the behavior of family members and friends in range of undercover pranks. Zodiak Kids controls all worldwide rights for Cambushed except North America and the Americas, which will be handled by Marblemedia’s Distribution360. Marblemedia previously has teamed with The Foundation on projects including Fort Boyard: Ultimate Champion.

Programming Picks

The Jim Henson Co. is extending its relationship with Discovery Kids Latin America, which is licensing Henson’s new Doozies series and Sid the Science Kid: The Movie.

Santa Barbara-based Foothill Entertainment is shopping its new animated series Boy and the Dinosaur, a hot commodity at MIPJunior a few years back. Produced by 1461 Limited and Studio Liddell, the series will be ready for delivery in April.

Teletoon has commissioned a new season of George of the Jungle from Singapore-based kids’ media company August Media Holdings and Canada’s Chocolate Moose Media. The most recent season of George (2007) was a hit on Teletoon; the second season will begin delivery in 2014, distributed by DreamWorks Classics and August Rights and also headed to international telecasters including Nickeloeon for Germany and Northern Europe and TVE Spain.

Digital Update

Hit game Plants vs. Zombies is getting a limited beta launch as a social gaming experience on Facebook by Seattle-based PopCap Games, a division of Electronic Arts. PopCap also announced yesterday it will release sequel Plants vs. Zombies 2 this summer. The social adaptation will take players beyond the confines of the backyard on a series of road trips, where “players will be able to send hordes of zombies to their Facebook friends, a thoughtful gesture sure to be appreciated (and reciprocated),” according to the company.

German broadcaster Super RTL has snatched up licensing rights for Vodka’s multiplatform brand Bugsted in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Aimed at 8-12 year olds, Bugsted centers on the misadventures of a gaggle of mutated bugs from the moon. It’s available as a mini-series, iPhone, iPad and Android app, due in September, and action figures. Toy company Simba has been named master toy licensee for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

In Development

Laurence Fishburne has joined the cast of Triggerfish Animation Studios’ 3D animated film Adventures in Zambezia. Fishburne joins a voice cast including Liam Neeson, AnnaSophia Robb and Jake T. Austin. The movie, which is represented internationally by Cinema Management Group, has been presold into 50 international territories including the U.S., Canada, Germany, France and Russia.

In Memoriam

She was 79. Jane and Jim met in 1954 in a puppetry class at the University of Maryland in 1954 and were married in 1959.
