Good morning, it’s Wednesday, April 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
 
How’s this for some free promotion: the Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet held an invite-only hearing about virtual worlds yesterday which was simultaneously broadcast in Linden Labs’ Second Life, the leading virtual community with about 6 million registered users. The subcommittee, led by Net Neutrality advocate Ed Markey, wanted to explore some of the issues involved in virtual worlds such as, Can they be used to launder money? or Are the safe for children? So they figured, why not meet as avatars virtually? Rep. Markey also made headlines last December when he sent his chiseled avatar to attend a United Nations conference on global warming in Bali. But hey – at least it’s a way to save on jet fuel.

Sony
Pictures Television joined the crowded comedic video space with C-Spot, an ad supported web comedy channel that will distribute short form sketches on Sony’s Crackle, YouTube, Hulu, AOL Video and Verizon Wireless’ VCast, (not to mention directly to Sony Bravia TVs via the Bravia Video Internet link.) C-Spot will try to tickle the funny bone with an initial 6 series, each of which will run for 13-weeks and debut a new episode a  different day of the week:

  • Hot, Hot Los Angeles from Test Pattern Media satirizes soapy teen dramas (M)
  • The Writers Room is Kevin Pollak’s look into the craft of TV writing, produced by Hollywood ad agency/production studio Stun Creative (Tu)
  • Gaytown follows Owen Benjamin’s quest to come out to his fake beau (W)
  • Sony describes The Roadents, from Bix Pix Entertainment, as “The Odd Couple meets Easy Rider.” It features 3D animated rats traveling in a Winnebago (Th)
  • Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show, which originally debuted on YouTube in Feb. ’07, is an internet talk show spoof starring a Japanese character named Kiko, played by co-writer Kim Evey (who is actually South Korean) (F)
  • Weekends on C-Spot will feature entries from Best of Penn Says, outtakes from Penn Jillette’s unscripted web series produced by 10-in-1 Productions

AOL rolled out a beta version of MyMobile, designed to give mobile users a much more sophisticated interface through which to access personalized AOL services including AIM, AOL Mail, AOL CityGuide, Moviefone, MapQuest, AOL Local Search, AOL News, Weather, AOL Sports and AOL Pictures. AOL also announced expanded availability of the new AIM TXT service, now available through all major U.S. carriers.

CBS Radio
placed a giant web 2.0 foot forward announcing a deal to stream its stations to Last.fm listeners through a new online player coming out later this Spring. The deal follows CBS Radio’s recent agreement to offer live streaming on AOL and is similar to the Last.fm partnership struck with the BBC’s digital radio stations.

Part-two of the CSI:NY episode “Down The Rabbit Hole” about a virtual world killer concludes today with a nifty 3D Machinima segment produced by The Electric Sheep Company. Should be fun.

Disney-ABC Television Group’s Disney Channel will be added to MobiTV’s subscription mobile TV offering as a 24/7 simulcast.

Call for Content: The Webby Awards kicked off its second annual Webby in Motion contest. Original videos produced with Adobe software and inspired by one of ten topics including connections, entertainment, marketplace, media and interactive advertising must be submitted by May 10, 2008 for a chance to have the work presented at the 12th annual Webbys on June 10.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
This just in: Google and Virgin are launching Virgile – a joint venture to establish a human settlement on Mars. Don’t believe me? Here’s the video. If it’s on YouTube it must be true.

YouTube also had their fun on April fools day swapping out Rick Astley videos for each and every featured video on the YouTube homepage (a practice known as “Rickrolling.”) The folks at NewTeeVee have come up with a nifty timeline, tracing the first Rickroll back to March of 2007.

White label video outfit Reality Digital closed on a $6.3 million round of Series B funding, led by OpenView Venture Partners. The company makes a plug-and-play video sharing network that can be launched as a stand alone site or integrated into an existing environment. Reality Digital’s clients include MTV Networks and Lonely Planet.

Social media site Global Grind, funded by Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and Accel Partners, adds lots of cool features today including entertainment programming features, video sharing, an embeddable widget and even a Facebook Trivia Game application.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
If Microsoft and Yahoo are close to striking a deal, it is for the terms originally offered by the software giant according to The WSJ. Apparently no other interested parties have come close to its $31/share – $44.6 billion offer.

FCC chairman Kevin Martin told a CTIA audience the FCC should reject a petition by eBay’s Skype division to require wireless carriers to allow any device access their network.

Rejecting the offer of a board seat to keep quiet, a group of activist investors called for CNET Networks to get with the program and adopt more web 2.0 strategies, including revamping its search functionality and building in more social networking features.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Online ad network Undertone Networks will receive an undisclosed amount of equity financing from JMI Equity to expand operations and offer more products and services. Brad Woloson, GM of JMI, will join the Undertone’s Board of Directors as part of the deal. 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Here’s a study that helps explain some of the cynicism displayed by mobile content providers at CTIA this week. Nearly half of wireless phone consumers do not know whether or not their carrier offers mobile TV or video services, according to an online survey by QuickPlay Media. In a strong argument for the ad supported model, another 43% of respondents said perceived cost was the #1 reason they hadn’t tried mobile TV or video.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Salil Dalvi was upped to SVP/Mobile Platform Development for NBC Universal Digital Distribution. Salil will continue to oversee NBCU’s mobile content growth strategy, product development and operations, reporting to Jean-Briac Perrette, President, NBCU Digital Distribution.

Google’s Chief Informational Officer Douglass Merrill will become the next President at EMI, reports Furrier.org.

Dan Goldman was promoted to Director of Internet & Broadband for New York’s Thirteen/WNET. Dan joined the station in July of last year after co-founding entertainment software company Bandalong Entertainment.

Ben Mallory was hired by ad agency Red Tettemer as the shop’s first ever Interactive Creative Director. Ben comes to Red Tettemer from Digitas Health.

Cinema advertising company Screenvision named Seeta Zieger as VP/National Sales for the Western Region. Seeta will be based in Santa Monica and report to Michael Chico, EVP/Ad Sales.

Founders Cath Le Couter and Jess Search will celebrate Shooters’ 10 year anniversary in November.
