Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04/27/11
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, April 27, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
The fastest growing digital segment in recent months is daily deal sites – a trend not missed by Mark Zuckerberg and his Palo Alto faithful. Facebook announced on Tuesday it is ready to launch its own localized Deals offering originally unveiled in March, beginning with a test in five cities: Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco. Facebook will line up offers with its own sales staff, and also rely on third parties such as OpenTable and PopSugar City to bring in business. You can sign up to receive daily deal emails, but the company hopes that social sharing will spread the deals organically through its members’ feeds. The site’s 600 million-strong international user base makes it a formidable player out of the gate, and “Deals” could be just the offering to make Facebook credits the dominant virtual currency on the web.
Google’s YouTube may be getting ready to enter the premium video streaming space in earnest. The video sharing site, which has dabbled with renting independent movies, is seeking licensing deals with major Hollywood studios and has already signed Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Brothers, Lionsgate and Universal, according to a report in The Wrap. Pricing and rental policies are unclear, but titles could be available as early as next week. Fox and Paramount have both confirmed they are not participating.
Keith Olbermann fans’ wait is nearly over. Current TV announced that his nightly 8 o’clock show will premier on June 20.
NBA Digital reports an uptick in video usage during the first round of the playoffs. NBA.com says more than 114 million videos were viewed – an increase of 93% from last year, and more than 7 million average daily uniques visited the site, an increase of 69% from 2010. NBA GameTime App downloads delivered an 86% increase across all platforms from last year.
St. Louis-based cable MSO Suddenlink Communications, the nation’s 7th largest, became the latest to add HBO and Cinemax‘ TV Everywhere service. The services are now available through 7 multichannel distributors.
Rebuilding Japan is a new local filmmaking initiative from Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific to produce a series of original documentaries about Japan’s efforts to recover from its tragic 9.0 earthquake and tsunami. Local filmmakers are invited to submit stories that reflect the courage and resilience of the Japanese people as they seek to rebuild. The programs funding will pay for up to six films that will premiere in Japan on Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, and internationally next year on Discovery’s networks.
Nate Golon, executive producer of independently-produced half-hour comedy Workshop, reminded us that the second season of his 30-min. sitcom debuted on Hulu three weeks ago (predating Goodnight Burbank.) The show revolves around a group of young struggling actors in LA who attend endless “workshops” to hone their craft. It consists of slice-in-the-life vignettes loosely tied together with a unifying theme such as chronic usage.
Comedic, calorie-laden online cooking show Epic Meal Time in now under the Revision3 family of series as the producer seeks to expand beyond tech and gadgets. The show has grown its YouTube audience faster than your waistline will grow if you eat like these guys, averaging 2 million views per episode and racking up over 600k subscribers (making it currently 75th on the all-time YouTube subscriber charts.)
Two Apple customers have filed suit in federal court in Tampa, Fla., citing a report that claims the App store has stealthily recorded time-stamped location data and latitude-longitude coordinates, according to Bloomberg. The iPhone tracking controversy kicked off last week when two programmers issued a report claiming that the device tracks and stores user location data for a year.
Amazon, embarrassed by the failure of its Amazon Web Services (AWS) last week, beat analysts’ estimates reporting a 38% increase in net sales to $9.86 billion during Q1, compared with $7.13 billion in Q1 2010.
Live video transmission, analysis and archive solution provider FocusVision launched a live video streaming solution for mobile devices and tablets.
Visitors to leading local deal sites Groupon and Living Social are nearly two-thirds female and more likely than the average U.S. Internet user to be affluent, according to a new Nielsen survey. (Living Social user are 49% more likely than the ave. online American to make $150k or more a year, while Groupon’s visitors are 30% more likely.) Their interests are broad, but close to half are interested in Gardening, the most popular category, while roughly one-third are interested in home repair/renovation, religious involvement and landscaping.
The most active social networking people in the world are the Dutch in terms of the percentage of the population, according to a new ComScore report, where homegrown Hyves.net remains the top social networking site. Despite the maturity of the Netherlands’ online market, social networking continues to grow in leaps and bounds, up 18% to 11.5 million visitors in March 2011 (representing 96% of the online population.) Facebook is quickly gaining ground, however, surging 76% in the past year to nearly 6.6 million visitors with Twitter and LinkedIn ranking third and fourth, respectively. Each grew approximately 70% in the past year to reach over 3 million users. The Netherlands now has the deepest penetration in the world for both sites.

Twitter clones are a dime a dozen – Google Buzz, Yahoo’s Meme, a HoneyTechBlog posting identified 250 a couple of years back. The enduring bugaboo for microblogging sites remains the business model, however. Comet Technologies’ TwitPump thinks it has solved this problem by adding compressed live video, utilizing algorithms originally developed for transmitting video over land lines. Twitpump provides broadcasters, musicians such as Zakk Wylde and other publishers with a plug-in for their website and mobile apps that allows them to manage social marketing campaigns to drive Twitter and Facebook mentions back to publishers’ own sites. A multimedia timeline integrates streams onto a third party site, which can be monetized with ads, promotions, merchandising and web links. The platform was recently used to cover SXSW and Toronto’s JUNO Awards. Comet also announced plans to launch two thematic offshoots this summer around sports and gaming.
