Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 26, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

The White House announced yesterday that President Bush intends to nominate Kevin J. Martin to be a Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission for an additional five-year term, ending in June 30, 2011.  Following Martin’s appointment, he will be re-designated as Chairman, FCC, the role he currently holds.  Prior to this, Martin was Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy.

KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network and VIZ Media have partnered to launch Toonami Jetstream, a new free broadband service that will offer on-demand, full-length streaming episodes of animé and action series.  Toonami Jetstream (http://ToonamiJetstream.com) is slated to launch July 17 and will feature series including Naruto and Samurai Jack.  Additionally, users will also have access to episodes of series not currently airing on US TV including Hikaru No Go, MÄR and The Prince of Tennis.  Toonami Jetstream will be refreshed weekly with new episodes, while the other episodes will remain available in the archive.  An extension of Cartoon Network’s Saturday night Toonami action/adventure programming block (7-11p), Toonami Jetstream is advertiser supported. Among the other shows set to be available are the original Toonami series IGPX and VIZ Media’s Megaman NT Warrior series and the all-new Zoids Genesis.

Nickelodeon Latin America will debut its first live-action original series, Skimo (30 x 14 min), on May 15.  The comedy is co-produced with Mexico-based Macias Group and stars all Mexican actors, per Variety.  Skimo is about two teenagers, Fito and Tavo, as they go through the ups and downs of running a business, girls and other teen issues.

MTV Networks Asia has launched a new Nickelodeon programming block on Malaysia’s TV9, a terrestrial TV channel.  Branded Nick di 9 the three-hour (3-6p) daily TV block is available in 7 million Malaysian households.  Dubbed in Bahasa Melayu, programming on Nick di 9 includes preschool shows (e.g. Blue’s Clues, Dora the Explorer) on Monday through Thursday, with Friday to Sunday featuring Nicktoons such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Jimmy Neutron.

Sony Pictures Television International and SkyLife, a Korean satellite broadcaster, have joined together to debut Animax, the 24/7 animation channel, in Korea this Saturday, April 29.  Under the deal announced in January of this year, Animax Korea will be carried exclusively on SkyLife’s DTH platform, which has upwards of 1.9 million subscribers in Korea.

Decode Entertainment has expanded broadcast deal with France 2, which has picked up the second season of the live action series Naturally Sadie, produced by Decode in association with Canada’s Family channel.  Additionally, France 3 and Nickelodeon France have both picked up Planet Sketch, a series commissioned by CiTV and Teletoon and created and co-produced with Aardman Animations.  Other recent international sales for Planet Sketch include Cartoon Network Asia Pacific and Cartoon Network Latin America, followed by ABC Australia and South African broadcaster M-Net.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Fisher-Price, Inc. has extended its partnership with Somerset Entertainment Ltd., a producer/distributor of specialty music sold via non-traditional retailers, to market and distribute five new Little People DVD titles in the US and Canada beginning this spring.  Targeted to preschoolers, the stop motion videos Little People titles revolve around characters as they explore the world around them. Each DVD includes ten adventures that are designed to introduce kids to shapes and colors, as well as daily life experiences. 

GoPets, Ltd., the Korean-based online virtual pet and social network has inked a long-term, exclusive marketing and operations deal with Replay Interactive Pte, Ltd, a video game distributor in the Singapore.  In addition GoPets has surpassed 300,000 users worldwide.  Launched in 2004 GoPets is a competitor of US based NeoPets Inc., which was acquired by Viacom for Nickelodeon last year.  NeoPets launched in 2000 and has 25+ million registered members around the world.

The nominees for the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) annual awards have been announced, with the awards to be handed out in eight categories during the annual LIMA gala and Awards Ceremony, June 21, in NYC, as part of the annual Licensing International trade show being held in the city June, 20-22, 2006.  A full list of categories and nominees can be found at www.licensing.org.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Michael Carrington has been appointed Creative Director of Cbeebies, the BBC’s digital kid’s channel.  In this role Carrington will be responsible for overseeing CBeebies, all CBeebies programming/properties that air on BBC One and BBC Two, as well as for bbc.co.uk/cbeebies.  Carrington currently serves as Head of Animations and Program Acquisitions for BBC Children’s.  Previously, he was Acquisitions Executive, Discovery Channel (Europe), Deputy Head/Program Acquisitions, BBC Children’s and Head of Television and New Media, Create TV and Film Limited (f/k/a LEGO Media).
