Good morning, it’s Wednesday, April 25, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Black Family Channel (BFC), based in Atlanta, is in negotiations with Gospel Music Channel (GMC) to yield its 16 million subscribers, effective April 30. Black Family has been trying to gain a prominent foothold as a national network with its family-friendly programming targeting the African American market for the last eight years, but was unable to secure cable and satellite distribution to continue to fund the 24-hour network, according to Multichannel News. Black Family Channel executives indicate the network will not shut down operations altogether, but it is unclear how it will exist after April 30. BFC is co-owned by lawyer Willie Gray, former baseball player Cecil Fielder, entertainer Marlon Jackson, cable veteran Alvin James and former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield, and is managed by actor/producer Robert Townsend.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Eleven finalists are ready to battle during the second season of HGTV Design Star. This season the interior design reality competition program goes to Las Vegas along with host Clive Pearse. In the end, the final winner will receive a shot at their own design show on HGTV. The series begins with the Design Star Casting Special on July 22 at 10p then the regular weekly episodes follow on July 29 at 9p through September 16.
 
WE tv will add another original series to its line-up in December with Twister Sisters, the six-episode weekly series that tags along with two women as they search for tornadoes in the Great Plains. The network also will bring back a second season of John Edward Cross Country in September with 12 new one-hour episodes and season #2 of American Princess will premiere in August with eight one-hour episodes. In other WE tv news, the debut of Wife, Mom, Bounty Hunter on April 20 (9-10p) drew in 173,000 W25-54 viewers.
 
As your invitations to the broadcast upfront presentations begin rolling in this week, don’t hold your breath for one from MyNetwork TV – it ain’t coming.  MyNet instead has decided to hit the road and present in a series of one-on-one chats with buyers.  Additionally, the role of telenovelas on MyNet will continue to be decreased as the current series wind down. Tuesdays will become reality TV night as of June 5. Conversations with reality producers including Mark Burnett, Bruce Nash and John Langley are ongoing.

The Africa Channel has just debuted in Middle Georgia on Cox Digital Cable and a free preview for subscribers in this area can be seen this week through Sunday.

UPFRONT UPDATE: LIFETIME TELEVISION

At its upfront presentation, Lifetime announced it will expand original programming for the 2007-2008 season with a 31% increase in budget over last year. The new original drama series that will debut this summer include:

  • Army Wives – premieres June 3 at 10p; ensemble drama about a group of women and one man living with their spouses on an army base. Kim Delaney leads the cast in this drama from The Mark Gordon Company and ABC Television Studio.
  • Side Order of Life – premieres July 15 at 8p; dramedy about a young photographer who reevaluates her life after a nudge from the “universe.” Marisa Coughlan and Jason Priestley star in this series produced by The Jinks/Cohen Company in association with Warner Horizon Television.
  • State of Mind – premieres July 15 at 9p; the story centers on a confident family therapist whose own problems are equal to those of her diverse group of patients. Lili Taylor leads the cast of this series from Shephard/Robin Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television.

Lifetime scripted series in development:

  • The Madness of Jane – one-hour drama pilot starring Ever Carradine as a neurologist who is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Produced by Fox 21.
  • Chambermaid – one-hour drama based on the novel by Saira Rao about a young attorney who clerks for a powerful federal judge. Executive producers are Paula Weinstein and Jeffrey Levine.
  • Bailey Weggins – one-hour drama adapted from the book series by Kate White about a newly divorced New York City investigative reporter working for a news magazine show. From Lionsgate.
  • Burnt Toast – one-hour drama adapted from Teri Hatcher’s book which centers on a forty-something single mom. From ABC Television Studio.
  • Mile High – one-hour drama taken from the British SKY ONE series that follows the work and play time of the cabin crew of an up-and-coming airline company. From ABC Television Studio.
  • Lovely and Talented – one-hour drama set in the San Fernando Valley about a divorcee who opens an acting studio for women. Denise DiNovi executive produces along with co-executive producer/writer Eileen Walls.

Lifetime has several reality series in development:

  • How To Look Good Naked – half-hour pilot, with Carson Kressley as host, offers non-surgical tips for women of all sizes to look good in and out of clothes. Produced by RDF.
  • Judgment Day – one-hour pilot where the audience will vote off seven women one at a time based on their answers to questions and how they handle certain challenges. From Fox Television Studios.
  • America’s Psychic Challenge – one-hour pilot that pits psychics and their special skills against each other to see who is the best. From Bunim Murray.
  • Going For Broke – one-hour show that follows four women as they are put on a “debt diet.” From Reveille/Super Delicious.

Movies have been Lifetime’s meat and potatoes since its launch.  This upcoming year will also have several originals:

  • What If God Were the Sun? – May 14 at 9p; stars Lacey Chabert and Gena Rowlands about a cynical emergency room nurse who forms a close bond with a terminally ill patient. Produced by Fox Television Studios, JECO Productions and Old Beantown Films.
  • Write & Wrong – June 3 at 8p; Kirstie Alley stars in and executive produces this comedy about a Hollywood screenwriter who is considered too old, so she uses her young nephew as a stand-in writer for her scripts. Produced by Jaffe/Braunstein Films.
  • Girl, Positive – June 18 at 9p; Andrea Bowen, Jennie Garth and S. Epatha Merkerson star in this story about a high school senior who worries she has been infected with the HIV virus. Produced by Von Zerneck-Sertner Films.
  • Custody of the Heart (wt) will air this summer; a 13-year old girl, who is raised by her stepfather after the death of her mother, is torn between him and her birth father. From Jaffe/Braunstein Films.
  • The Gathering – four-hour miniseries set for this fall; thriller about a man who seemingly has a perfect life, then suddenly his wife disappears. From Sony Pictures Television.
  • Christmas Miracle (wt) will air in December 2007; Jami Gertz and Dylan Walsh star in this film about an estranged Idaho couple who, by accident, get trapped in a blizzard just before Christmas. From Nomadic Pictures.

And two others currently in development:

  • House of Hilton – based on the book by the same name by Jerry Oppenheimer that takes a look at one of America’s most famous family dynasties. From Jaffe/Braunstein Films.
  • Victoria Woodhull – period piece and true story about the first woman to run for President of the U.S. in 1872. Produced by Barbara Lieberman Films in association with Robert Greenwald Productions.

 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Showtime‘s series Brotherhood, scheduled to begin its second season this fall, has added a new regular to the cast.  Brian F. O’Byrne will join Jason Isaacs and Jason Clarke in the drama about two brothers living in an Irish-American neighborhood in Providence, Rhode Island.  O’Byrne will play the brother’s cousin and who involves himself in the one brother’s criminal business.

Independent is a new program from Mark Burnett Prods., designed to launch initially on MySpace.com and then migrate over to network television, if not launch simultaneously.  According to Variety, the program will be looking for a young American who has the political voice of the younger generation.  Audition tapes will be put up on Myspace.com, allowing viewers to decide which of the candidates it prefers. The winning candidate receives $1 million to be used as seed money for his or her political campaign. This MySpace.com audience will also determine what are the most important issues their independent candidate will tackle.  At this point, there is not a television network attached.

Casting Call: Food Network wants all favorite family recipes submitted for a new competition series called Ultimate Recipe Showdown. Starting today, Food Network will accept recipe entries that are original concoctions and will be judged by the Food Network panel on originality, presentation and taste. They must also fall into one of six categories: Chicken, Soups and Stews, Cakes, Cookies, Pasta, Comfort Food and Burgers. The top nine entries in each category will travel to Los Angeles this August for the final competition, with the winning contestant receiving $10,000. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

CBS Interactive has appointed David Botkin to the new position of SVP/Research and Audience Analytics. David will set up the metrics and analytics used for the division’s audience research, and will work in tandem with David Poltrack, Chief Research Officer, CBS Corporation and President, CBS VISION. He will also work with a number of CBS business units and in particular CBS Sales and CBS Marketing, providing them with insight into the interactive audience.
 
Michael Wright has been advanced to SVP for the newly reorganized and renamed Content Creation Group at Turner Entertainment Networks. In his new capacity, Michael will continue to manage all original programming for TBS and TNT including original series, limited series and specials, as well as adding original programming for TCM and original content for all three networks’ digital products to his roster. Based in Los Angeles, Michael will report to Steve Koonin, President, Turner Entertainment Networks.
 
Hilary Glaholt has been named Producer for Trailer Park TV, the television marketing unit of Trailer Park headquartered in Hollywood.
 
Richard Gay has been upped to EVP/Strategy and Business Operations at VH1 and CMT. Richard supervises strategic and long-term planning, partnerships, operational functions across the business. In addition to VH1 and CMT, he performs these functions for the digital channels VH1 Classic, VH1 Soul, VHUno, Tempo and CMT Pure Country.
 
Jennie Baird has been tapped as SVP/Editor-In-Chief of iVillage where she will manage the direction of the site’s lifestyle editorial content as well as a staff of writers and producers. Most recently, Jennie was Executive Director/Women’s and Lifestyle Programming at AOL.
 
With plans to expand its business through strategic acquisitions, Endemol USA has hired A. Ron Milkes as SVP/Corporate Development. He will research acquisition opportunities for such Endemol shows as Deal or No Deal, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Big Brother.
 
Bunim-Murray Productions has upgraded Gil Goldschein to the position of COO to supervise the management and growth of the company and to lead in the area of new media ventures that encompass mobisodes and internet aftershows for programs like The Real World and Real World/Road Rules Challenge. Gil will also steer toward corporate initiatives as the company delves into the documentary and scripted television arenas.

MONDAY – A18-49 Analysis:  ABC kept up the winning pace Monday night with 4.1/11 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. NBC tried to close the gap coming in second with 3.9/10, followed closely by CBS 3.8/10, FOX 2.8/8, UNIV 1.9/5, CW 1.2/3 and TELE 0.4/1. ABC’s Dancing with the Stars kicked off the night by winning at 8p with 4.5/13. Then NBC took over first place honors during 9p with Heroes at 5.3/13. CBS had a turn in the #1 spot with CSI: Miami at 10p pulling in a 5.1/ 14, while the premiere of The Real Wedding Crashers on NBC debuted with a 3.1/8 that ranked third overall.

Wow, another USA media feeding frenzy complete with a backlash to give the story even more legs.  Since I am working in Germany at the moment I did not see the NBC video but regardless once I tackle this workload I will see it on one of the many sites that thrive on such a sensation.  I really want to see this as much as I would like to see a similar proclamation by Jim Jones, Charles Manson, or any of the classic maniacs.  I would also like to see the complete rantings of Mr. Bin Laden and his associates and not have to be spoon fed pieces of their rhetoric and told not to watch it in full as it is propoganda.  Hey I get to see the entire press conferences of Mr. Bush and his cabinet so why not the other side?
 
When we don’t get the opportunity to see and translate our own definitions we end up relying on the media experts to “tell us” what happened instead of being able to figure it out ourselves. I have found that whenever I read a complete transcript of a speech or go back to the original source material of a subject I always get a slightly different perspective then when I only read the opinions of Mr./Ms. Expert and their 90 seconds of CNN-Fox-NBC-CBS-ABC analysis.  I am always surprised when I find members of the world media community who are quick to censor famous or infamous characters because they have a problem with the message or the motives. 
 
Granted we do not need to see a parade of beheadings produced by groups intent on murdering for the sake of tv exposure however I think the incident in Virginia was of a somewhat different nature.  Virginia was a horrendous exercise and we as the public should have the option of choosing to investigate the motives.

…and now the final triumph of the shooter is his ultimate triumph, an hour on from Oprah and the search for “understanding and/or enlightenment” – or dare I say ratings?
 
Perhaps it goes with the territory. Or, perhaps, network agendas notwithstanding, we need to wash the evil away by revisiting it over and over again until we reach our own saturation point.

I have to agree with Calvin Cole, that sensationalism is firmly ingrained in the newsgathering gestalt.  Back in the stone-age, when I was a j-school student, the shibboleth they taught us  was “fire, floods, and freaks.”  Certainly NBC’s decision falls into the latter category. Anything that depends on ratings to sell advertising necessarily has to attract an audience, and business as usual just doesn’t cut it. Remember – the format is the flypaper.  We are all the flies.

Why is no one addressing  the wall-to-wall, 24-hour, day-after-day coverage of the incident?  I’m referring to the 24-hour news station(s) that are also doing nothing more than taking advantage of the sensationalistic nature of the incident by keeping the story going hour after monotonous hour by creating ridiculous interviews with nearly non-related people and commentaries by tenth-rate psychologists.  This is just as bad, if not worse, than NBC airing the tape.  At least, what NBC aired was real — not fabricated for the sole purpose of filling air time to keep the story going.

For me, the most disturbing element of News organizations’ use of the killer’s video has been the promotion-without-warning during breaks in primetime entertainment. Anyone tuning in to the News specifically on a given night sees the video teased during the open and can choose whether to continue watching the broadcast or not. The primetime promos, however, ambush the viewing family. An alternative way to grab viewers might be to use a still video grab with a “disturbing footage tonight…” v.o. teasing the upcoming segment.
