Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04/23/08
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, April 23, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Is it a question of being fair and balanced? News Corp’s MySpace is choosing to stream election coverage from NBC News and MSNBC rather than Fox News Channel on its Decision’08 election portal. The page links to more than 140 NBC-sourced videos.
Premiering tonight in HD:
Voom’s Equator HD: Keep It Green at 8p
Look for characters such as Pee Wee Herman and Pat to come to a platform near you. Sony Pictures Television signed a deal with the famed LA-based improv troupe The Groundlings to create 50 original digital shorts over the next year, reports Variety, mining both past and newly created characters for one offs and series. The first few 3-5 minutes skits are due out this week on mobile and online via Sony’s Crackle.com and other outlets.
Up against competition from TMZ.com and Perez Hilton, Comcast‘s E! Online completed a major overhaul – cutting way down on the clutter and adopting the now familiar one-post-at-a-time blog format.
Mixing the wanderlust with desire to do right by the earth, Discovery Channel Canada has created an eco-focused adventure site called ExpeditionGreen. Check out this video about the creation of video game that allows users understand past and present environmental dangers.
Time to kill at the office? In what appears to be an exclusive, TBS.com began streaming full episodes of Sony Pictures Television’s Seinfeld, rotating 4 episodes at a time. Don’t bother if you’re on a Mac, though – all of TBS’s content streams using Microsoft DRM.
Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios signed a deal to launch 10 channels on MySpaceTV with programming from syndicated shows including Entertainers with Byron Allen, Beautiful Homes and Great Estates and Cars.tv.
History.com is launching a mini-site today to coincide with the premiere of History’s latest series Tougher in Alaska, replete with interactive maps, timelines and supplemental info.
Call for Content: Organizers of VIDFEST in Vancouver are accepting submissions through the end of the month for the Pop Vox Awards in a variety of categories including Best Digital Animated Short, Best Digital VFX and Best Digital Campaign. Public voting is open from May 1-12 on the site.
Photobucket joined Flickr in developing its own public API, allowing applications to be built enabling users to create and edit their photo albums from third party sites. Intercasting Corp. is one of the first out of the gate with an ANTHEMT-based app allowing mobile phone users to share and upload photos for transfer to the site.
White label social networking creator Ning, co-founded by Marc Andreessen, raised an additional $60 million in 4th round funding led by Allen & Co.
Video conferencing application provider SightSpeed launched a widget app for MySpace, providing free, Flash-based video chat and mail for MySpace users.
Widget network/platform Widgetbox launched a new widget gallery optimized for the iPhone. Type in iphone.widgetbox.com on your browser to access the gallery.
The Hollywood acting community continues to oppose the studios on the issue of net neutrality. WGA West President Patric Verrone and actress Justine Bateman (co-founder of FM78.tv) testified before the Senate Commerce Committee yesterday arguing that mandating open access would insure creativity on the net. The MPAA has come out against net neutrality regulation, saying it would hamper ISPs’ ability to prevent piracy.
Yahoo reported that revenue increased by 9% to $1.82 billion year-over-year, using the good news to reiterate its position that Microsoft is lowballing.
Sony is delaying the release of PlayStation Home once again, the 3D real-time community built for PS3 consoles. This time they’re saying it will be ready in fall of 2008.
Online video company Break Media formed the Online Video Advertising ROI Council, a new industry group made up of online video outlets, agencies, and technology providers out to forward the cause of online video as an ad medium. Charter members, besides Break, include Oglivy One, truTV, National Geographic Channel, AT&T, eMarketer and Lotame.

Former Showtime executive Mark Greenberg is expected to be named CEO of the new premium pay TV/online service in the works from Paramount, MGM and Lions Gate, reports Business Week.

Former Xbox marketer Orlena Yeung was named VP/Marketing of CBS’ Last.fm. She reports to Last.fm co-founders Martin Stiksel and Felix Miller.

Mark Kingdon will succeed Second Life founder Philip Rosedale as CEO of San Francisco-based Linden Lab.

Hillary may have won in Pennsylvania but Obama continues to lead in online video views, according to the latest Nielsen Online VideoCensus numbers. Here are the results for the remaining candidates for March:
1. Barack Obama: 518,000 unique viewers of video content (16 minutes per viewer)
2. Hillary Clinton: 351,000 unique viewers of video content (4.8 minutes per viewer)
3. John McCain: 38,000 unique viewers of video content (1.5 minutes per viewer)
Pundits will say it’s because he’s got the youth vote. The more plausible explanation may be that he’s got the Silicon Valley vote, which unduly influences web traffic due to the sheer density of web geeks. Barack has carefully cultivated this connection, remember, with visits to the Google campus and a carefully thought out technology platform. Also, it never hurts to have a little viral creativity behind you.
