Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, April 19, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The CW adds four new affiliates – all from the LIN TV group; and MyNetwork TV adds nine.  Univision launches a new primetime series next week called The Prettiest Ugly Girl, and Alias returns this evening with two new original episodes. The industry loses two notables, Nielsen sets sweep dates, the CAB will announce its first Hispanic Cable Facts guide, and three Viacom networks have new projects in development.  All of this you’ll get below in fuller terms.  Can you tell there was no real above-the-fold story today?

Tonight’s Premiere:
MTV:  Tiara Girls at 1030p* THE GOOD STUFF *
The CW has added four new affiliates, all owned by the LIN TV Corporation, to its roster of stations. The CW’s national coverage has now increased to more than 81% of the U.S., including 19 of the Top 20 markets and 26 of the Top 30. The new affiliates are:
WWHO/Columbus
WNLO/Buffalo
KNVA/Austin
WBPG/Mobile
 
And MyNetwork TV has signed on nine new affiliates, bringing its total up to 105 and accounting for 65% of the country. Four digital stations owned by Pappas Telecasting:
KDMI-DT/Des Moines, KKAZ-KPTM-DT/Omaha, KDBC-DT/El Paso, and KPTH-DT/Sioux City.
As for the other five, individually owned:
WZDX/Huntsville-Decatur
WFXI/Greenville
KZOU/Columbia-Jefferson City
KIDZ/Abilene

On Monday, Univision will show the U.S. premiere of the novela, La Fea Más Bella (The Prettiest Ugly Girl), and will air it weeknights at 8p. . This novela is Mexico’s #1 most-watched program and it stars Angélica Vale, Jaime Camil and a diverse supporting cast. The story centers on Lety, a highly intelligent, but unattractive young woman who takes a lowly secretarial job because her looks get in the way of her finding a more worthy position. In the process she falls in love with her boss and eventually has an appearance-enhancing transformation.
 
Individual episodes of Alias, from Disney-ABC Television Group, from seasons four and five are now available for $1.99 each on the iTunes Music Store, in case you feel the need to catch up.
 
If you’ve ever worked in the news department or read the website Shop Talk, then the name Don Fitzpatrick surely rings a bell.  Don died last weekend after having been treated and released at a local hospital.  He was 56. The recipient of the RTNDA’s John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award in 2005, Don was a headhunter of news talent on the local station level, and he was one of this industry’s original bloggers.  He began Shop Talk in the early 1980’s , a venture he later turned into TVSpy and then sold it to The Vault in 1999. His funeral is scheduled for Friday in Alexandria, LA.

Executive Producer and Showrunner on FX’s The Shield, and noted director Scott Brazil died on Monday at the age of 50 of Lou Gehrig’s disease combined with Lyme disease. Despite his illness, Brazil was at work as recently as last Thursday. Brazil’s credits include CSI: Miami, Nip/Tuck, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Hill Street Blues – the last of which he was awarded twice for an Emmy.  Brazil has also been with The Shield for all five seasons, and directed 11 episodes. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday in Los Angeles.

The Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau (CAB) is releasing its first Hispanic Cable Facts guide.  The research tool, similar to CAB’s general market publication Cable TV Facts, delves into estimates, viewing trends, geographic targeting information, generational insights and Hispanic programming options to give more details on the Hispanic consumer and Latino TV market.  The material was compiled from industry sources including Nielsen Hispanic Services, Franco Research, Geoscape and Simmons Market Research.  More info at www.ontvworld.org.

* NEW PRODUCTION / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT *Rosie O’Donnell’s sketch comedy The Big Gay Show has been picked up by Logo.  Set to debut in 2007, the 6×30 show will be exec produced by Rosie and directed by Amanda Bearse. The cast includes Erica Ash, Dion Flynn, Julie Goldman, Stephen Guarino, Johnny McGovern, Kate McKinnon, Nicol Paone and Michael Serrato.

Nick at Nite has a new original sitcom in development, exec produced by former Seinfeld writer Carol Leifer.  Dubbed The Darlene Westgor Project, also known as the winner of Nick at Nite’s Search for the Funniest Mom in America contest a year ago, the show is a Roseanne-styled sitcom loosely based on Westgor’s life as a mother to two teenagers. Westgor will star as herself.

Currently in development at Spike TV is a project from Frank Spotnitz and Vince Gilligan, and writer James DeMonaco called Amped from Fox 21 about an unidentified disease that breaks out in epidemic proportions; and a second project called The Kill Pit from Mandeville Films about a bank heist in real time, that doesn’t go exactly as planned.

Correction:  In CBS’ The Big Bang Theory, the leading role recently recast with Amanda Walsh was originally played by Jodi Lynn O’Keefe.  Iris Bahr is still with the project in the role of Gilda.

E! Networks has upped Peggy Jo Abraham to Executive Producer, E! News. In her newly expanded position, Peggy Jo will continue to be involved in the news operation as well as integrate news content within E! programming and E! Online.
 
Scott Reich has been promoted to VP/Multiplatform Music Programming at VH1, reporting to Rick Krim, EVP/Talent and Music Programming, VH1. In this new role, Scott is responsible for music and talent content across all digital platforms such as VH1.com, VSPOT, wireless and VOD, and will manage music and talent bookings, label relations and music programming. He will also assist in developing new music content ideas.
 
Greg Goldman has joined RDF USA as EVP/Development and Current Series. Greg will manage the development department’s daily operations and oversee creative on new and current series.
 
A&E International Television has elevated Sean Cohan to VP/International Business Development and Digital Media. In this newly created position, he will oversee strategy and growth of AETN brands outside the U.S., including A&E, The History Channel, The Biography Channel and Crime & Investigation Network.  In addition, Sean will manage global digital media, strategy and operations projects.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis: FOX came out best Monday night with a 4.5/12 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. CBS and NBC tied for second position at 3.7/10 each, followed by ABC 3.1/8, WB 1.7/5, UNIV 1.7/4, UPN 1.4/4 and TELE 0.5/1. At 8p, though, NBC had the most viewers with Deal or No Deal at 4.4/12; FOX’s Prison Break was second at 3.5/10. FOX’s 24 at 9p took the top spot with 5.5/13; the premiere of Celebrity Cooking Showdown on NBC was far behind in fourth place at 2.9/7. In the 10p hour, CBS took over the lead with CSI: Miami at 4.9/13.
