Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 10, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

With Louisville walking away champions, CBS’s coverage of the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship Game on Monday drew an average overnight household rating/share of 14.3/23, up 18%compared to last year’s 12.1/19, according to Nielsen. The game averaged 23.4 million viewers, rising 12% over last year’s 20.9 million. Top five metered markets were Louisville with a 54.0/70, followed by Detroit, Columbus, Indianapolis and Cincinnati.

Overall, the tournament ranked as the most-watched NCAA Tournament in 19 years across CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV averaging 10.7 million total viewers, up 11% from last year’s 9.6 million total viewers with an average HH rating/share of 6.7/14, up 10%.

On the Air

The top five moments from the NCAA Championship Game, according to TiVo
1. 11:46p  With two seconds on the clock Michigan’s Mitch McGary throws up a half-court shot as Louisville begins to celebrate.
2. 11:41p  With 29 seconds remaining Louisville’s Luke Hancock is intentionally fouled and hits both free throws to increase their lead to 6.
3. 11:37p  Michigan’s Glen Robinson III makes two free throws to cut Louisville’s lead to 4.
4. 11:34p  On their third attempt shooting in one possession, Louisville’s Chane Behanan makes a layup.
5. 11:23p  Peyton Siva slams home an alley-oop dunk on an assist from Luke Hancock.

The Canadian Football League named Michael Copeland to serve as the organization’s president and COO. Copeland is charged with overseeing CFL’s strategic and business operations and will work with Commissioner Mark Cohon on building the business. He first joined the CFL as COO in 2006.

The addition of Notre Dame to the Atlantic Coast Conference (in all sports save football and hockey) is expected to add more than $1 million to university coffers, according to CBS Sports. The addition payday will come from a bump in annual TV revenue to more than $18 million a year for the conference. The conference has also been mulling a branded sports channel with ESPN.

FUEL’s TV’s coverage of UFC on FUEL TV 9: Mousasi vs. Latifi scored the second largest audience of any live UFC fight on the channel, taking in an average of 236,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. The replay of the bout drew an additional 98,000 viewers, while a third late-night showing brought another 92,000 for a combined total of 426,000 viewers.

Jay-Z is reportedly pulling out of his ownership share of the Brooklyn Nets in order to broaden his Roc Nation Sports agency into the world of basketball, according to Yahoo! Sports. The famed mogul owns less than 1% of the team, but will have to divest in order to be certified as an NBA agent. Roc Nation recently partnered with CAA to launch a sports representation biz.

GSN is turning to Speed Skating Champion Apolo Anton Ohno to host the channel’s upcoming game show Minute to Win It. The episodes are produced by Shine America and will debut on June 25.

Sportsman Channel announced the launch of Sportsman HD throughout Charter’s Fort Worth and surrounding North Texas region. As part of a phased rollout, the outlet will be available on channel 712 throughout the region by mid-June.

Jon Rish, who had served as a play-by-play voice and host for WEEI’s Red Sox broadcasts, resigned from station after being asked to take a pay cut by parent company Entercom, according to The Boston Globe. Rish had been working without a contract since the end of the year, and notified the station of his decision hours before the first pitch of the Red Sox home opener.

Sold out! I look forward to seeing everyone at the Cynopsis: Sports Media Awards on April 17. The event takes place at Yale Club in Manhattan. Click here for more info.

Sponsorship & Promotion

The NFL has a new record holder, with Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III the new title holder for most jerseys sold in league history, according to ESPN. NFLShop.com reports that for the fiscal year between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013, Griffin bested Peyton Manning, Ray Lewis, Colin Kaepernick and Tom Brady in the top five sellers.

Meanwhile, the NBA also has a new face atop its sales charts with Carmelo Anthony now ranking atop the league’s jersey sales, to move past LeBron James on the charts, according to the AP. Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant and Derrick Rose round out the top five.

Front Row Marketing Services inked a deal with the organizers of the 2013 America’s Cup (America’s Cup Event Authority) to drive sponsorship sales and commercial rights for this year’s competition in San Francisco. The deal give global sports property representation for FRMS and allows FRMS to market the upcoming broadcasts on NBC and NBC Sports Network. FRMS also announced a consulting and sales partnership with Fordham University that will include all commercials rights for the Division I school.

The NBA and Kia Motors revealed that, for the first time ever, fans will have the opportunity to vote on Twitter to help decide who will take home the Kia NBA Most Valuable Player Award this year. For the past three seasons, fans have been able to vote on the NBA site but this year the program expands to include social media voting on Twitter. Twitter voting will allow fans to tweet a vote for one player each day throughout the voting period.

Intersport’s decision to allow fans to determine the winner of the Denny’s Slam Dunk Championship via Twitter, paid off last Thursday. With the opportunity to officially vote on each dunk, social chatter about College Slam drew 16 unique and 24 total U.S. and worldwide trending topics on Twitter. Halfway through the dunk contest’s first round, #CollegeSlam scored as the top U.S. and worldwide trend for ten minutes, and fans sent nearly 60,000 topical tweets during the two-hour event, to generate 54 million impressions of College Slam content on Twitter.

With the tournament wrapped up, sports TV service Thuuz revealed its selections of the most exciting games of March Madness based on the company’s algorithms. Top five contests included Wichita St./Louisville, Michigan/Kansas, Wichita St./Ohio St., La Salle/Kansas St. and Iowa St./Ohio St.
