After being leaned on by Attorneys General from 17 states, online classified site Craigslist finally succumbed over the weekend and censored its Adult Services section. Users trying to access the section will now literally see a “censored” label pasted over the link. Industry workers are expected to get around the ban by inserting their ads in different sections.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Apple
says more than 1 million users or one third of the people who downloaded that latest iTunes software within 48 hours of its launch last week have joined the new Ping social network.
 
What’s in a domain name? More traffic, potentially. Scripps Networks Interactive has rebranded and relaunched its Recipezaar.com site as the much easier to find Food.com, featuring a catalog of over 400k recipes and at least 200 more being added each day. The redesign also focuses on community features, highlighting user generated recipes, reviews and advice from the site’s 1.5 million + members. Unilever is sponsoring the launch of Food.com to promote its “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!” spray program.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Microsoft is spending more money around the Sept. 14 launch of the 4TH installment of its signature Halo videogame franchise, “Halo: Reach,” than any Xbox 360 game title to date, per Variety. Ad tie-ins are also being utilized to help spread the word – central character Master Chief is begin featured on 300 million Mountain Dew cans and 30 million bags of Doritos. Movie and TV versions of the Bungie-produced game, which has sold some 34 million copies to date, have yet to come to fruition.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Hewlett-Packard won the bidding war with Dell over online storage technology company 3Par Inc late Thursday. HP agreed to pay $2.07 billion for the company or $33/share – more than 3 times what the stock was trading for when Dell made its initial offer.

Yahoo has partnered with the Vestel Group, the largest TV manufacturer in Europe, to bring the Yahoo! Connected TV platform to European TV sets in more than 40 countries across Europe starting in Q1 2011.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Skype updated the Windows version its video chat software to include 10-way video calling, doubling the amount of users that can be on the line at once.
 
South Korea’s KT Corp., the country’s #2 mobile carrier, announced it would begin selling Apple‘s iPhone 4 on Sept. 10 as part of its exclusive distribution deal.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Mark Hurd, ousted CEO of HP, is in talks with Larry Ellison to join Oracle as its Chief Executive, according to reports. Mr. Ellison was a staunch supporter of Mr. Hurd after the harassment/expense report scandal at HP broke and criticized the company for forcing him out.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
YouTube‘s Content ID system was devised to ferret out copyright-protected content that has been uploaded illegally to the site, analyzing images and audio tracks and automatically comparing them to protected content. Now it’s being used to help monetize that content, with Google utilizing the software to identify unauthorized clips of shows like Mad Men then attaching ads to them, according to a report in the NYTimes. Ad revenue derived from such fan posts is then split with the content owner as part of the YouTube Partner Program. It’s hard to imagine the folks at Viacom, who just lost a very expensive lawsuit leveled at YouTube over the issue of benefitting from its illegally shared content, willingly participating in such a program. Then again, what’s the harm – if properly managed? The value of YouTube is that it provides a platform through which the world can admire, comment on and share bits of video. Clips of professionally produced shows have benefitted when their shows are clipped and shared by achieving a watercooler effect; now they can gain real scratch from the transaction.
