Advantage

09.21.10

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, September 21, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

Non Verbal Communication

Is it true that non verbal communication (NVC) accounts for 93% of the message you’re sending?  More specifically, studies have shown that body language and posture accounts for 55% of the message, voice tone and pitch account for 38% and what you actually say account for a measly 7%.

Despite various outlets reporting this as an accurate, it’s widely accepted that the statement is overstated.

With that in mind, if someone is shaking their fists in your face and ranting, you don’t have to understand a word he says to understand his message.  But when talking with our inside voices and without charade like NVCs, the spoken word remains king.

But the subject should not be dismissed, in fact, it should be studied when communicating with people that are important to you, like the person interviewing you for a job.

NVC, when improperly used, can significantly hurt your chances of getting hired.

So here are what we think are the facts:

SITTING

Hunching in a chair demonstrates nervousness and low self-esteem.

Sloppy posture indicates carelessness.

Sitting too erect conveys a rigid personality.

Placing a knee or foot on top of your other knee is seen as defensive, though crossing your feet at the ankles or placing both feet on the ground, shows confidence.

It is best to relax when sitting and ever so slightly, lean forward.

HANDS

Number one rule, keep them below your head.  When talking, touching your mouth, nose or eyes is seen as a deceitful gesture.

Twisting your hair or playing with an earring or necklace demonstrates anxiety.

Crossing your arms is defensive and can communicate a lack of trust.

It’s best to keep your hands in your lap and only occasionally move them to re-enforce what you are trying to say.

HEAD & EYES

Keep the head upright and straight shows authority and confidence, tilting it slightly to one side establishes friendliness.

Looking down while not looking at notes indicates that you are unsure about being  qualified for the position.

Make eye contact without staring.  Rule of thumb is any time over 10 seconds, people start to get uncomfortable without a nod or some head movement.  Listeners maintain eye contact longer than talkers, but it’s important to re-establish eye contact quickly once you look away.

VOICE

Tone, pitch and volume.  Make sure all of these are well within the accepted norm of your surroundings.  An even tone equals confidence, varied pitch keeps the listener interested and appropriate volume stops people from hating you.  Keep your emotions in check and though polite and respectful, do not come across as subservient.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
The Importance of Listening
by Michael Pollock

One of the most important skills you should use in your job search is listening carefully, both literally and metaphorically. You have to listen to your friends when they tell you about opportunities. You have to listen to your bosses and clients to learn about your strengths and weaknesses. You have to listen to your heart to know what you really want to pursue.

You especially have to listen to the wording of the job ad. What does it actually say they are looking for? You have to listen closely to the recruiter and to your interviewer.

You will already have invested large chunks of time developing your own unique positioning to separate you from the pack. You have probably crafted yourself a script for your elevator meetings, a template for your cover letter, a set of anecdotes for your interview. And all this as it should be. If you have thought it all through and internalized it and what it means, it will do its magic for you. But if you are determined to stick to your script willy-nilly this investment might all be for nought.

Listen carefully to what is said and also between the lines to what is unsaid. And that means listening not only in the moment of the interview, but it means listening to the research you will have done in advance. Listen to what the company says on the website. Listen to the story the recruiter tells you about the job. Listen to the LinkedIn profile of your interviewer. Take it all in and frame your responses and approaches accordingly.

If you are safely in a job but aspire to a promotion or a new assignment, listen to your boss, to your co-workers, to the press so that you can create the opportunity and be there as the obvious person to fill it. This comes not just from wanting it  and telling your boss “I want the bigger title,” but from asking the right questions of the right people and listening to what is needed, so you can tell them you will provide just that.

People like to be listened to. They like to be heard. They do not like to be ignored. So tell them you heard them by responding directly and positively to something they said. Don’ t stick to a script  be ready to improvise. If they feel you have not listened to them, or worse yet responded with a ” No, ” they will shut down and they will not listen to you. Listening keeps you relevant and smart. Their awareness of your listening to them keeps them engaged with you. I can’ t stress this enough.

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers
Answered by Michael Pollock

I am a downsized marketing and brand exec with 20 years in the cable TV business. I am in a situation now that I am applying for jobs in the retail sector with the hope that I can at least get health insurance.

I find that if I put down that I was a senior vice president, it’s an immediate rejection for these $12 an hour gigs. On my last round, I purposely lied and wrote that I was a manager making 60K with the hope that the employer may call my previous jobs and just confirm that I worked there and not get into position and salary.

I obviously would never lie on an application, and I don’t take this lightly. but feel that this is the only way to get anywhere. Any advice on this?

My advice here is  don’t lie, but you don’t have to tell every piece of the whole truth.  You don’t have to say you were an SVP.  You don’t have to say you weren’t either.  Perhaps you need not include your previous salary.

You need an explanation of why you are making the change. You could tell them that you really want to make a new career in retail.   You’ll bring your marketing and branding skills to the table, and you know that the best place to learn is on the shop floor interacting with customers.  So that is a plausible and smart reason for you looking for this kind of low-level position.

I suggest you focus on areas that you know something about then you can give the impression that you will hit the ground running: clothes or furniture or sports gear or whatever. Are there skills that you have that would seem attractive to your retail hirer?  Interpersonal skills, organizational skills  something you can emphasize that shows you have thought about the position and what is required.

Frankly I don’t know a lot about the $12 an hour jobs.  These are probably best secured by showing up and filling out an application and having a manager see you. Assuming of course that you present nicely and look like you will be willing to do the work and stay with them for a while. If you want to get to a place that will give you benefits you are going to have to convince them that you are there for the long haul.

I have been working short term contract jobs but it is not enough to survive. I am building credibility on paper but am not advancing professionally, how can I break the cycle? Do I have to move to NYC or Los Angeles? I also don’t have the financial resources to go to film and media conferences to network my skills, reliability and personality which I know is recommended. Any other suggestions you can recommend?

If you are building credibility and doing the work, then it sounds as if what you need to do is to get this fact in front of as many of the right kind of employers as possible. If you live in a secondary market where there are not so many opportunities, then, yes, you might have to relocate to a larger market where your chances could increase.

But before you do that  don’ t give up on networking, though again this could depend on the size of the market where you live. In NYC where I work, there are very many free networking events; at some you’ ll buy your own drink  and at many more a generous sponsor will provide refreshments. If you pick the right events your conversations can be very productive indeed.

So look on your local MeetUp board, or ask around to where people in your business hang out. You may find that in your town there are two or three watering holes where after work every night can be found just the people you need to be meeting.
