Cynopsis: Sports
09.17.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 17, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

CBS Sports made it a double over the weekend, with its coverage of the “Manning Bowl” on Sunday marking another high for the weekend, joining the Alabama/Texas A&M game in the ratings stratosphere. The Denver victory over the Giants handed the channel with a 17.8/34, up 24% from last year’s 14.4/28 and setting the highest-rated debut in the metered markets for the CBS National game in 15 years.

On the Air

Speaking of CBS Sports, the network officially announced that Greg Anthony would take over as lead college basketball game analyst starting this season. Clark Kellogg, meanwhile, will shift back to the studio and has been named the Network’s lead college basketball studio analyst. Anthony will pair with Jim Nantz to form the lead team. CBS Sports’ 2013-14 college basketball schedule tips off on Saturday, Dec. 7 with UCLA/Missouri.

After forking over $425 million for rights to the World Cup from 2018-22, FOX Sports is reportedly against plans to reschedule the 2022 tournament in Qatar, according to Bloomberg. FIFA officials are strongly considering a proposal to move the games form the hot summer to the fall to ease risks to the athletes. However, FOX doesn’t want the tournament clashing with NFL coverage and is pushing against the move. FIFA’s executive board will meet next month to discuss the proposal.

ESPN reports that the 2013 WNBA regular reason on ESPN2 delivered double digital increases in viewership this season, to easily outpace last year’s numbers with a 28% spike (231,000 vs. 180,000). The company’s coverage of the 2013 WNBA postseason, including the Eastern and Western Conference Semifinals, Conference Finals and presentation of the WNBA Finals starts Thursday at 8p on ESPN2.

BTN revealed coverage plans for the inaugural season of Big Ten Hockey, which will include eight straight weeks of “Frozen Friday” doubleheaders in January and February as well as the 2014 Hockey City Classic at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. BTN will also carry the entire Big Ten Hockey Tournament, set for March 20-22, 2014. Host Rick Pizzo anchors BTN’s studio team with  announcers that include Dan Kelly (play-by-play), Rob Andringa (analyst); Ben Clymer (analyst), Matt Shepard (play-by-play), Fred Pletsch (reporter) and others. Programming begins Oct. 11 at 8p with Army/Penn State.

This time around, Jerry Seinfeld will visit Keith Hernandez’ turf. The comedian will join the network’s Mets coverage tonight where, beginning with SNY’s pre-game show at 6p, Seinfeld will team up with lead studio analyst Bob Ojeda and host Chris Carlin on Mets First Pitch presented by Cadillac. Following the pre-game show, Seinfeld will hit the broadcast booth to join Hernandez, Ron Darling and Gary Cohen to handle the play-by-play for the Mets game.

Yesterday’s tragic events caused the Washington Nationals to postpone the evening game against the Braves which will now be rescheduled for a day-night doubleheader today, according to the team. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with our friends at the Navy Yard and those impacted by today’s incident,” the Nationals said in a statement.

A couple college football programming notes:
CBS Sports made its SEC on CBS football game selection for Saturday, Sept. 28, choosing LSU/Georgia. The 3:30p game will see Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson call the contest, along with reporter Tracy Wolfson from Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga.

Around the dial, FOX Sports also unveiled matchup selections for FOX and FOX Sports 1 on Saturday, Sept. 28. FOX Sports will air the Arizona/Washington game in prime time from Seattle beginning with the FOX College Saturday pregame show at 6:30p. On FOX Sports 1, games begin at noon with the battle for the Iron Skillet, featuring SMU/TCU. At 4p, the network will carry LA Tech and Army in the inaugural Heart of Dallas Kickoff Classic at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas.

CBS Sports Network is lining up a new documentary, Marching On: 1963 Army-Navy Remembered. The special will spotlight the football game between the two teams on Dec. 7, 1963, 15 days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The one-hour documentary will air on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 6p, 50 years to the week after Kennedy’s death.
