09/16/08
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, September 16, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The day the sky almost fell in on Wall Street electronics superstore Best Buy agreed to acquire the company often blamed for almost killing the music business. Napster was had for $121 million or $2.65/share, nearly twice its closing price on Friday. Best Buy plans to leverage the online subscription music service to sell complementary digital products to consumers and whittle away at iTunes’ dominant 70% market share of the digital download market. Napster had already been selling subscriptions from Bestbuy.com.
Comcast added several new programmers to enhance the video offerings on Fancast.com signing deals with ABC, The CW, Showtime, HBO and The Food Network, per The AP. New ad supported episodes and clips from the networks will begin to appear this coming weekend, although ABC shows such as Lost, Desperate Housewives and Dancing with the Stars are viewable now on the site.
Congrats to the Primetime Emmy Award winners in the category of Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media. The Heroes Digital Experience on NBC.com won in the fiction subcategory and The Disney Channel Games Digital Media Event produced by Creative Asylum and Walt Disney Internet Group won for nonfiction. Check out glitzy daily coverage leading up to the Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC.com .
Rainbow Media hopes to have Sundance Selects ready to roll out during Q1 of 2009, a new on demand movie service allowing cable and satellite operators to offer Sundance Channel movies on a transactional basis. IFC in Theaters and IFC Festival Direct are Rainbow’s other transactional movie services.
Event Reminder: Today is the first ever “Digital Day” at the New York Television Festival, to be held at New World Stages in Midtown Manhattan.
Call for Content: From the MPAA and partners comes The Democracy Video Challenge, a worldwide video competition inviting users from around the world to define what democracy means to them. Six regional winners will be eligible to receive an all-expense paid trip to the United States that includes special screenings of their videos in New York, Hollywood and Washington including studio visits, and meetings with film directors, public officials and democracy advocates. MPAA will screen the six regional winners’ videos in Washington.
Social media marketing agency LiveWorld is rolling out a new interface today to simplify the process of adding community features to an existing site. LiveBar, available later this week on Tulane University’s online daily news site and later this month on A&E’s bio.com, appears as a translucent overlay at the bottom of any content page allowing users to chat, leave short and longer messages or post opinions. Because the solution takes weeks rather than months to develop and install LiveBar should lower the barrier of entry for sites looking to quickly join the social networking revolution, according to Peter Friedman Chairman and CEO of LiveWorld.
Creator of the native recording application Podcaster became the latest iPhone developer to receive a rejection notice from Apple, kicking off another backlash against Apple’s seemingly random policies for the platform. (The company’s rational for the rejection is that it would duplicate the existing podcast application bundled in iTunes.) What is really getting under developers’ skin is the lack of clear guidance from the company on what’s acceptable for the platform. In the meantime Podcast is being distributed on an adhoc basis from nextdayoff.com via email. There’s even a review/rating system for people who want to leave their comments.
A group of venture capitalists led by Kleiner Perkins unveiled a new $100 million iFund to back new ideas for the iPhone platform. Almost a third of the money is already spent, according to fund manager Matt Murphy. Recipients include: Pelago, developers of a social discovery and location sharing app called Whrr; iControl, a home automation and monitoring solution slated for release during Q1; and ng:moco, a game company launching its first titles later this month.
Ever hear a tune from a band you’ve never heard before and wonder who it is? Treat free iPhone app Shazam as your own musical guru. Simply hold your phone up to the music and Shazam will identify the song and artists within seconds. The interface allows you to buy the mp3 on the spot, learn more about the artist or make a note of the discovery to share with others later. The London-based developer celebrated 20 million global users earlier this month. It is deployed in over 60 countries by more than 75 mobile carriers.
Ad supported iPhone video clip app vSNAX added Cablevision’s Fuse to its programming line-up. A nice complement to the YouTube app, vSNAX provides daily-refreshed news bytes, movie trailers and segments from over 25 media partners including CBS News, G4 TV, Style Network, VH1, Ford Models, Ripe TV and Accuweather.com.
B2B social networking site LinkedIn launched its own vertical ad network powered by white label service Collective Media enabling third party sites to run LinkedIn’s ads. The LinkedIn Audience Network targets ads based on job title and market segment.
MTV Networks also got into the act with the advent of MTV Tribes, a series of demographic-focused vertical ad networks built around the company’s core online properties. Youth-targeted networks of publishers focused on music, movies, teen sports, gaming and style will be built around various MTV brands beginning this month including CMT, Spike and VHI. A “tribe” is also planned for Comedy Central for Q1 of 2009.
AOL’s Platform-A division Adtech will provide ad-serving capabilities for React2Media, an online advertising network offering interactive marketing opportunities to media agencies, direct advertisers and publishers. The deal marked Adtech’s U.S. debut as Platform-A’s ad serving unit.
Online gaming continues to catch on with female users, according to new findings from comScore Media Metrix as women of all demos find casual gaming increasingly available online. Contributing to strong growth in the category among younger girls is the increasing popularity of fashion and dress-up sites (such as Stardoll.com, DressUpGames.com, and I-Dressup.com) and virtual worlds (including Neopets and Gaiaonline.com.) Older females are playing games on women’s content portals such as iVillage.com, which has a partnership with gaming site Pogo.com.

SMS ad network 4INFO is appointing Patricia Clark to oversee sales and expansion in the east coast as Regional VP of Advertising Sales. Patricia will be based in 4INFO’s new New York City office, its 4th in the U.S. Prior to joining 4INFO, Clark served as VP/Digital Sales at WWE.
Chairman and CEO of Loews Hotels Jonathan M. Tisch and Jeffrey Stewart announced the formation of Walnut Hill Media, a new investment vehicle targeting the creation, production, distribution and syndication of film, television, on-line, and other visual and audio content. Jeffrey will serve as the company’s primary managing executive.
Theorem Inc. hired Marcus Harding as UK Business Development Manager to be based in its new London media business center. Theorem’s London office offers ad trafficking, search operations and data analysis as well as reporting to agencies, publishers and ad networks.
What a time for a relaunch! The Wall Street Journal flips the switch on a newly redesigned website this morning as WSJ.com‘s 1 million + users turn to the site to try and learn about what’s left after yesterday’s catastrophe on Wall Street. Its look follows the latest design trends – less clutter, more white space and no more navigation buttons up the left side of the home page. There will be far more use of the News Reel aggregation service, a new video player and more liberal use of multimedia content in general, according to Gordon McLeod, President of the Wall Street Journal Digital Network. And you still must still be a paying subscriber to view most of the content. The biggest change to site is the addition of community features similar to the ones introduced on Dow Jones’ Marketwatch.com last year, allowing users to set up profiles, post comments or open discussions around any story. But there’s a twist: only subscribers can post comments and you must use your real name to do so. “We’re looking for quality discourse and we thought this was the best way to leverage our smart, educated audience,” said Mr. McLeod. (Another added bonus: no more anonymous flame posts!) Social Networking couldn’t come to the revered business daily at a better time – now distraught investors have someone to share their pain with.
