Creative ad veteran, Gene Case, 72, died last Thursday in Manhattan. Mr. Case was best known for creating the memorable 1964 political television ad dubbed “Daisy Ad” in support of Lyndon B. Johnson for President. Mr. Case along with partners formed the New York advertising agency Jordan McGrath Case & Partners and while there created the “Tum-te-tum-Tums” tagline for Tums antacid product and the tagline “Thanks, I needed that!” for Mennen Skin Bracer. The agency was sold in 1999 to the French ad company Havas. Following nearly 25 years working with major commercial brands, Mr. Case returned to politics in 2002 by helping to establish Avenging Angels, an advertising agency that develops campaigns for liberal organizations such as The Nation, the Democratic National Committee and the environmental group, Riverkeeper. He is survived by five children from three marriages, his third wife, a sister and nine grandchildren. Distinguished-looking actor Kevin McCarthy died Saturday at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA. He was 96 and lived in Sherman Oaks, CA. Mr. McCarthy acted in several Broadway plays when he was spotted by Elia Kazan who cast him as Biff, the elder son of Willy Loman in the London stage production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. Mr. McCarthy went on to portray Biff in the 1951 film version which earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. Five years later in 1956, Mr. McCarthy was cast in a low-budget B movie, Invasion of the Body Snatchers which was named one of the Top 10 science fiction films of all time by the American Film Institute in 2008. Throughout the rest of his career, Mr. McCarthy played hundreds of roles in feature films and also on television including The Studio in the 1950s to the more recent The District in 2000. He also toured the US playing Harry S. Truman in the one-man show Give ‘Em Hell, Harry for twenty years, including at Boston’s Charles Playhouse where I was honored to have worked with him. Mr. McCarthy’s last appearances were in the film Wesley in 2008 and the short film I Do. He is survived by his second wife, Kate Crane, three daughters, two sons, a stepdaughter, a brother, and three grandchildren.
