Starting this week, Turner Broadcasting, via its TBS and TNT channels, will air commercials created to explain the concept of TV Everywhere. The ads will feature stars like Conan O’Brien and will encourage users to download TBS and TNT apps to start watching network programming online and on demand. The campaign will also include a longer ad to be posted on YouTube that details the process of downloading and authenticating the users’ app subscriptions. Turner-parent Time Warner is championing TV Everywhere services as a way to retain cable subscribers. [Via The New York Times‘ Business Day section]
Row 44, Inc. will now offer a wireless video-on-demand service that will allow in-flight passengers to access an extensive library of movies and television episodes that can be streamed to their smartphones, tablets or laptops. The service is launching with many popular current and classic titles via launch partnerships with Disney, Twentieth Century FOX, Universal and Warner Bros.
TV Guide Networks has reached an agreement with Bright House Networks to bring its HD and full-screen programming to Bright House subscribers in all of their markets, including Indianapolis, Birmingham, Detroit, Tampa and Orlando.
According to a Globecomm presentation at IBC2011, Ka-band will create opportunities for satellite providers to provide interactive triple play content to rural areas. Said Paul Scardino, VP of Corporate Sales and Marketing at the managed network services company, “the power, speed and bandwidth capabilities of Ka-band are not only perfectly suitable for this need [to provide cost-effective content to rural markets] but come in a changing world where the TV and computer have become one and the same.”
Before making its American television debut, Academy Award-nominated actress Brenda Blethyn’s TV series, Vera, will stream online to subscribers of Acorn TV. The detective series is based on the best-selling mystery novels by Ann Cleeves.
First Day 2: First Dance is an original web series that is entirely distributed on Facebook and YouTube. Created by Alloy Entertainment, the production company behind TV shows like Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries, the series premiered on September 9, with additional new episodes slated to air every Tuesday and Thursday until the show’s second season finale on October 6.
Ooyala, Inc., an online video and technology services company, unveiled Ooyala Social, an HD-quality social TV platform that lets Facebook users share video, find new content based on their social circles, live chat while viewing and even watch video across multiple screens and devices. This platform can enable broadcasters, distributors and film studios to release on-demand and live content on Facebook. In fact, Miramax is already using Ooyala Social.
Through a partnership with Avid Media PTY Ltd, Vibrant Media will now be extending its services to Asia and the Pacific. The company is able to provide marketers the opportunity to create and deliver targeted ads within premium web content. Their publisher client list is over 6,000 strong globally, bringing in over 250 million unique site visitors per month. Vibrant’s brand advertising clients include HP, IBM, Paramount and Microsoft.
Tremor Video has raised $37 million in additional funding. This comes on the heels of consistent expansion for the company with its recent acquisitions of ScanScout and Transpera in the past year, along with the launch of Video Hub, a platform that analyzes numerous video signals and determines which factors are the most important for brand campaign success, in May. DigiDay believes that Tremor’s recent moves signal a commitment to further expansion, possibly even away from being only a video ad network to more of an analytics company.
imbee, the digital media company that launched a profanity-free music service, has acquired Fanlala, the pre-teen online community and entertainment news site. Current plans indicate that Fanlala will be integrated into the imbee platform. As part of the deal, Fanlala COO Tim Golden will become SVP at imbee and report to CEO Alan Anderson. In his new role, Golden will head editorial content, marketing and user experience while remaining in Los Angeles with the Fanlala staff.
Social networks account for 22.5% of the time that Americans spend online, according to Nielsen‘s “State of the Media: The Social Media Report” that was released yesterday. Other findings include:
- At over 53 billion minutes in May 2011, Americans spend more time on Facebook than on any other website.
- Tumblr has almost tripled its audience from a year ago.
- Nearly 40% of social media users access the networks via mobile devices.
- Users over the age of 55 are driving the growth of social sites through the mobile internet.
- Across a selection of 10 global markets, social networks and blogs are the top destination online.
- While more women watch video clips on blogs and social media channels, men spend more time watching them.
According to The New York Times‘ Media Decoder blog , this report represents a step by Nielsen, who traditionally provides such information for traditional media, to also become a go-to source of data for new media.
Yesterday, Ultralase launched a “Twittervision study” that will use the social media site to encourage people in the United Kingdom to tweet their eye prescriptions in an effort to create a snapshot of the state of the country’s eyesight. More than 2,000 entries have already been collected by the project that also seeks to raise money for Ultralase’s charity partner, Vision Aid Overseas.
BET Networks has released an Android app for its popular music countdown TV show, 106 & Park. The app offers many interactive features including a location-based “fame lottery” where hosts zoom into heat maps showing users logged into the app during the show and call one lucky fan in a particular city. Other features include a Twitter stream, mobile bar codes to unlock exclusive content and a video voting system where a user has to scratch a record like a DJ to generate votes for that respective song/video.
CityPockets is upgrading its iPhone and Android apps. The updates include a daily-deals mobile marketplace, credit card storage if you don’t have a PayPal account, the opportunity to aggregate all of your daily-deals accounts into one location and the ability to search deals by location and category.
Marie Mustel will come on at Banijay Group, a conglomerate of international production companies, as its new Digital Business Developer. She will oversee digital strategy as well as increasing the activity of new and existing brands in the digital area.
Curt Doty has been named GM and Executive Creative Director for Bemis Balkind‘s newly expanding Digital Group. Doty will be responsible for the creative agency’s client offerings in digital content, advertising and distribution.
A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE
.
For those of you, who actually prefer the higher speeds and quality that come with data plans, but still wouldn’t mind a better alternative to the Safari web browser, check out the “Dolphin Browser.” Available on both iOS and Android, this is a gesture-based browser that gives you much more depth than the Safari web experience. What does it offer? Let’s see: tabbed browsing; a webzine that displays web pages as a series of thumbnail images to make it easy to scroll through them; a full-screen option; and gesture-based browsing, meaning you can make a gesture on your screen, such as a letter or a symbol, and it will perform an action that you have already pre-set, such as going to a specific website. Think of it as a really sweet shortcut. It’s also very easy on the eyes. Pretty cool, huh?
