~ MORE STUFF ~

NBC News’ upcoming new primetime magazine show has been dubbed Rock Center with Brian Williams.  The weekly, one-hour live program will premiere this season and be helmed by anchor/managing editor Brian Williams and feature Harry Smith, Kate Snow and other correspondents and anchors of NBC News.

This Sunday, The Style Network launches a limited four-episode reality series, Momster of the Bride highlighting moms and daughters navigating the ups and downs of planning a wedding.  Two back-to-back episodes will debut this Sunday at 10p and 1030p. Another episode will air on September 25 with the final one airing October 2 at 10p.  Momster of the Bride is from Screen Door Entertainment.

Later this month, BBC America debuts a new 14-episode observational docu-series, 24 Hours in the ER.  Filmed inside one of London’s busiest emergency rooms, the series covers around the clock action over 28 days using 70-specially engineered remote cameras.  BBC America launches the US premiere with double back-to-back episodes on September 27 at 9p.  24 Hours in ER is produced by The Garden Productions.

For the first six months of this year, total measured advertising expenditures increased by +3.2% compared to a year ago and finished the January-June 2011 period at $71.5 billion, according to a quarterly report from Kantar Media.  The report additionally includes for the first time paid search advertising expenditures.  Overall in the Television category, measured ad revenue was up by +1.8% with Cable TV at +11.8%; Network TV falling to -7.6%; Spot TV at -0.9%; Spanish Language TV up to +1.7%; and National Syndication up the most at +18.5%.  Overall Internet Media was up by +10.4% with Paid Search up by +8.6% and Display up by +12.9%.  In other categories, Magazine Media was up by +2.9% overall; Newspaper Media was down by -0.3% overall; Radio Media grew to +1.4% overall; Outdoor was up in the double digits to +11.8%; and FSIs down by -6.4%.

Sunday’s fourth season finale of Sunday Best on BET at 8p attracted 2.1 million total viewers.

Andy Whitfield died on Sunday of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in Sydney, Australia at the age of 39.  The Welsh-born actor starred in the first season as Spartacus in the Starz original series Spartacus: Blood and Sand which debuted in January 2010.  Starz President/CEO Chris Albrecht released this statement on the passing of Mr. Whitfield, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield. We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in ‘Spartacus’ and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.”

As ABC’s daytime drama All My Children nears its end on September 23, one of its original cast members, Mary Fickett died last Thursday at the age of 83.  Ms. Fickett played nurse Ruth Brent Martin on the soap and in 1973 won the first ever Emmy Award granted to an actress in a daytime drama following her character’s passionate anti-Vietnam War speech.  ABC released a statement yesterday regarding the passing of Ms. Fickett.  “We at ABC were very saddened to learn about the passing of one of All My Children’s original cast members,Mary Fickett, who portrayed beloved nurse Ruth Brent Martin from 1970-1995 and again from 1998-2000. As we honor All My Children’s 41 years on ABC,we cannot help but recognize and remember Mary’s wonderful depiction of Pine Valley’s revered Ruth. Ruth’s marriage to chief of staff Dr. Joe Martin provided the bedrock upon which the town of Pine Valley was built. Their marriage was always a stabilizing force that represented ‘home’ for many. In memoriam, the network will dedicate the September 21 episode to Mary, which specifically focuses on the Martins. We extend our deepest sympathy and thoughts to Mary’s family and longtime fans.”

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

PPI Releasing, LLC picked up the global distribution rights to the drama series Blackstone which debuted last spring on Canada’s Showcase and APTN networks.  Production on the series’ second season is underway from Prairie Dog Film + Television.  The series is produced in association with Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.

Discovery Networks International said the new 12-episode series My Naked Secret will launch on TLC International this Thursday initially in Poland and then later around the world on TLC and other lifestyle networks.

FOX International Channels (FIC) acquired the distribution rights for the upcoming new series American Horror Story from Ryan Murphy and produced by 20th Century Fox.  The series will debut in the US on FX October 5 and internationally, FIC will pair American Horror Story with AMC’s The Walking Dead.  The two series will launch airing back-to-back in the late-prime time period beginning the week of November 7.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

John Wells Productions is working on two book adaptations.  For NBC, Wells is developing a drama project based on Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlins novels about an African American WWII vet living in Watts who investigates crimes during the 1940s to 1960s.  Mosley will adapt the books. The second project is a drama for ABC based on Carol Wolper’s Anne of Hollywood novel and Wolper will be involved to adapt her book which is described as a modern take on The Other Boleyn Girl.

Prolific producer Shonda Rhimes sold another drama project to ABC under her Shondaland banner.  The one-hour project from ABC Studios is about a young, idealistic and newly out of work defense lawyer who attempts to start his own firm along with an eccentric group of lawyer misfits.  The young lawyer realizes he might have been fired from his old job because he got too close to a deadly cover-up.  Jenna Bans (Off the Map, Grey’s Anatomy) is the writer and an executive producer along with Rhimes and Betsy Beers.

In other ABC news, the network handed a put-pilot commitment for a multi-camera comedy starring Jim Belushi.  Belushi would star in and executive produce the project titled You Won’t Even Know I’m Here.  Diane English (Murphy Brown) is on board to write the project from ABC Studios.  The plot centers on a co-dependent father (Belushi) and his teenage daughter’s relationship.  Brillstein Entertainment Partners is also involved to executive produce with Belushi.

Making it official, The CW picked up the prequel series project to Sex and the City titled The Carrie Diaries by Candace Bushnell which relates the high school years of Carrie Bradshaw.  Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz are producing the project with Amy Harris tapped to write.

TNT is developing Tom Clancy’s Homeland Security with Michael Ovitz tagged to executive produce the series.  The drama is a procedural about a team of domestic intelligence agents who battle enemies at home and abroad.  Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Clancy and Chris George will all write and serve as executive producers along with Ovitz.  TNT Productions is producing.

Over at TBS, the network ordered a pilot from talk show host Conan O’Brien and his production company, Conaco.  The yet-to-be-titled multi-camera comedy is about a family guy who leaves his job and returns to his childhood neighborhood where he hooks up with his old best friend.  Ben Wexler (Still Standing) will be the showrunner and co-writer on the project with O’Brien serving as executive producer.  The pilot will show yet this year.
