Cynopsis

09/13/05

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, September 13, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

A poll conducted by the international polling firm Ipsos on behalf of Associated Press and AP-TV Guide of one thousand adults, indicates the majority of adults think there is too much reality on television, drama shows are the most satisfactory tho there may be too many crime-related shows, sitcoms are generally fine as are news programs, but just over half think there are too many talk shows.  Breaking that down –

  • 80% of respondents say there are too many reality shows, and the bigger gripers in the bunch are the youngest adult demos, A18-34. Despite the genre title, 44% think that reality shows don’t have to anything to do with actual reality.
  • 60% think the number of dramas on TV is just right, but half of adults say there are just too many crime shows.  Interestingly, the younger crowd (A18-34) tend to be more satisfied with the number of crime shows.
  • The response to sitcoms is probably what you’d expect – half of the adults polled think there are the right number of sitcoms on the air, tho the younger adult would like to see more.
  • In the news department, 60% think there is the right amount of news programs on the air now, tho older viewers and women where more agreeable about the amount of news than other viewers.
  • And finally, talk shows.  Adults, particularly the younger adults, think there is too much talk on TV, which puts them in agreement with rural viewers. Alternatively older viewers and suburban viewers, think there is about the right amount of talk on TV.

Interviews with respondents were conducted over the phone over the course of two days in early September.

TV Land has ordered up a pilot of a new reality project tentatively titled I Pity the Fool.  Given the title, do you know who’s starring in it?  Mr. T.  From Lions Gate Television in association with Left/Right Films and Remag Guerilla, this show puts Mr. T in the position of dishing out advice, in his own Mr. T style.

Lions Gate TV has bought the rights to Jake Steinfeld’s book “I’ve Seen A Lot Of Famous People Naked, And They’ve Got Nothing On You!: Business Secrets from the Ultimate Street-Smart Entrepreneur” (AMACOM, September 2005) and will be creating a reality TV show series based on the book called Be the Boss. In a competition format, the series follows Jake as he coaches budding entrepreneurs completing various business-related challenges.

Producers Marty Adelstein and Dawn Parouse (Adelstein/Parouse Prods), the pair behind Prison Break currently airing on Fox, are in the process of developing three new projects with 20th, two for Fox and one at ABC, according to Variety:

  • Fox:  Vengeance is about five regular guys are who assigned the task of assassinating five terrorists, written by Adi Hasak.  Also at Fox, an untitled primetime soap from writer Nicky Silver, set in the world of academia at an upstate New York college.
