Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 9, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
MLB Network’s move into the postseason paid dividends for the channel, as Sunday’s Tigers victory over the A’s in Game Two of the ALDS set ratings records. The game ranked as the outlet’s most-viewed telecast ever with 1.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen, up 107% over the previous high. MLB Network also drew its highest-ever coverage rating, nabbing a 1.3, up 63% from the previous best. The channel will carry Game Three of the National League Division Series featuring the St. Louis Cardinals/Washington Nationals, with Bob Costas and Jim Kaat on the game call on Wednesday, at 1p, marking Costas’s first Postseason telecast since 2000.
On the Air
Facing MLB Postseason games, NBC’s coverage of SNF delivered an 11.7 overnight rating for the network, off 16% from the previous week’s score. The game, which saw New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees break Johnny Unitas’ record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass, went up against a delayed Yankees/Orioles game on TBS, forcing the late Reds/Giants game to shift to TNT. The ALDS matchup drew a 3.3 in Nielsen overnight numbers for TBS.
The highest-rated game of the week went to CBS, which featured a classic Peyton Manning/Tom Brady matchup. The contest drew a 15.7 household rating for the channel, up 1% from last year’s comparable game. Early regional action on Sunday averaged a 9.3/19 in the overnights, up 2%.
Meanwhile, CBS Sports coverage of the SEC ON CBS also saw a year-to-year bounce, with Florida’s upset of LSU drawing an overnight household rating/share of 4.7/11, up 42% from last year’s 3.3/8 and marking the highest rating for a regular-season SEC ON CBS game in the Saturday 3:30p window since 2010.
Meanwhile, FOX Sports Media Group revealed its college football selection for FOX for Saturday, Oct. 20. The channel will offer a Pac-12 showdown featuring Stanford/California at 3p. Craig Bolerjack will handle play-by-play with Joel Klatt and Petros Papadakis. At 7p, the network gets a top 10 matchup pitting Kansas St./West Virginia. Gus Johnson joins analyst Charles Davis and Julie Alexandria to call the game.
FUEL TV announced that with the end of the quarter on Sept. 30, the network pulled its most-watched ever, recording its ninth consecutive month and 40th straight week of audience growth. For the third quarter of 2012, FUEL TV’s Total Viewers were up 130% and M18-49 up 150% compared to the third quarter of 2011, according to Nielsen numbers. FUEL TV posted its best September ever in terms of total day audience, and was up 171% in Total Viewers and 167% in M18-49 vs. September 2011.
The third quarter also delivered good news to FOX Deportes’ series Central FOX, which ranked as the most-viewed Spanish language sports news program on cable in August and September with the top spot among total viewers and Adults 18-49 for the first time ever, according to Nielsen. The series averaged 41,000 viewers overall and 29,000 in the A18-49 demographic.
Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star Shane Victorino is joining TBS’ studio coverage of the 2012 MLB Postseason through Wednesday. Victorino will join analysts Dennis Eckersley, David Wells and host Matt Winer on the channel’s pre-game show, MLB on Deck presented by Dodge Dart and the post-game show, Inside MLB presented by Captain Morgan, to wrap up each day’s action.
WFAN is getting a piece of FM action. CBS Radio inked an agreement to purchase 101.9 FM from Merlin Media for $75 million and will launch a simulcast of Sports Radio 66 WFAN on the station starting in late fall.
MSG Network has its broadcast team in place for the upcoming 2012-13 Knicks season, with Mike Breen returning courtside with long-time partner Walt “Clyde” Frazier, along with reporters Tina Cervasio and Jill Martin, who will continue to host “A New York Minute” during halftime. The pregame and postgame studio team will consist of Al Trautwig, who will host home telecasts, and Bill Pidto who will host road games. Alan Hahn will return for his second season as a Knicks studio analyst. Joining in-studio will be Wally Szczerbiak, who will make his MSG debut Thursday, October 11 in the postgame show following the Knicks preseason opener versus the Washington Wizards at 7p.
NHL Network announced that it will re-air HBO’s 24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic in its entirety beginning tonight at 8p and wrapping up the fourth episode on Friday.
Disney XD is beefing up its sports content, announcing a special called My Life as an NBA Rookie. The program will offer audiences an inside look at NBA players in their first year in the league and will debut on Oct 29 at 7p as part of the channel’s Nothing But Net Marathon. The special is hosted by Billy Unger and includes appearances from top pick Anthony Davis as well as the likes of Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard of the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James of the Miami Heat, Blake Griffin and Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers, and more (that would have been a sweet rookie class!).
Longhorn Network locked in the Iowa St./Texas game for the network on Nov. 10, with live Texas GameDay analysis and coverage two hours prior to kickoff. Game start time will be announced six or 12 days prior to the game.
