Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, October 6, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The Publicis Groupe ad agency signed a deal to commit several millions of dollars in ad spending to premium online video site Hulu as part of an upfront agreement structured around reaching certain demographics, reports AdWeek. The deal represents a turning point of sorts for Hulu, which has been able to charge upwards of $30 CPMs for its inventory but has so far been unable to secure upfront, long term, television-style commitments. Publicis has a long term relationship with Google but so far the ad giant has not opted to commit upfront dollars to YouTube.

Discovery’s PlanetGreen.com will launch a new season of short-form programming beginning Oct. 26 with the premier of 100 minute-long episodes of a “100 Places to Remember Before They Disappear,” profiling some of the most beautiful and fragile locales on earth. Other short-form series planned for the site and the network include cooking show “Organic A to Z” and the animated “My Place.”
ESPN.com launched the charter group of baseball blog sites for its newly formed SweetSpot Blog Network, a collection of local-market blogs designed to represent a specific, local voice for each of the 30 professional teams in MLB. ESPN.com senior writer and blogger Rob Neyer is anchoring the effort.
CBS may not want you to re-watch Letterman’s serial affairs mea culpa, but you can turn to CBS.com and CBS Radio’s Country Music Stations to view and listen to live streaming of a webcast concert from Tim McGraw. The exclusive show will be performed on Monday, Oct. 12, following the taping of his appearance on Letterman. Live and on-demand video of the concert will also be available on Last.fm, mp3.com, TV.com, etonline.com, theinsider.com and CBS Television Station sites.
Swiss-based live music channel and VOD service i-concerts finalized partnership deals with European satellite operator Eutelsat Communications and YouTube, effective mid-October, to extend its cross-platform distribution. The Eutelsat satellite uplink will enable operators to offer the i-concerts HD channel as part of their HDTV packages. I-concerts will also launch a channel on YouTube with hundreds of free HD quality concert excerpts.
Bloggers who take gifts or payment for their endorsements beware. The FTC released new guidelines regarding “the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising,” stating that any cash or in-kind payment received to review a product should be considered an endorsement and not an editorial review. Bloggers who make an endorsement must disclose the material connections they share with the seller of the product or service or face steep fines. Celebrity endorsers also are addressed in the revised guidelines.
FlickerLab and Gonzoft have agreed to merge to prepare for the launch of Gonzoft Television Animation’s live animation software in the U.S. The newly renamed FlickerLab LLC focuses on socially and environmentally conscious media and the building of sustainable media brands, such as an animated segment in Michael Moore newest feature Capitalism: A Love Story.

More recently, spending during the second quarter dipped by 5.4% to $5.4 billion. Display-related adsincluding rich media, digital video and sponsorshiptotaled nearly $3.8 billion in the first six months of 2009, a modest 1.1% decline from the same period in 2008. Ad agency 72andSunny launched a new multiplatform ad campaign to the promote the launch of the 2K Sports NBA 2K10 video game, featuring TV spots, print, outdoor and online ads, online CGI content films from PSYOP and even a Facebook app. Video spots pit NBA Finals MVP Kobe Bryant against Bulls Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose, with 2009 playoff anthem Amazing from Kayne West as the soundtrack.
Republican opposition to the FCC‘s net neutrality rules are mounting as twenty House Republicans, including many members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, sent a letter to FCC Chair Julius Genachowski on Monday urging him to delay the Oct. 22 vote on the plan.
The video services industry continues to consolidate as major players seek to acquire best-in-class technologies and improve economies of scale. KIT digital acquired long-running New York-based online video platform provider TheFeedRoom and Germany-based mobile video specialist Nunet AG in two separate transactions. KIT paid holding company IMG Worldwide $11.1 million for Nunet in cash and convertible promissory note. As part of the acquisition, IMG Worldwide and KIT digital will enter into a long-term contract, enabling KIT digital to continue to provide IMG with digital media services. The FeedRoom acquisition, which gives KIT a healthy foothold into the North American market, was an all-stock deal valued at close to $10 million.
Content delivery network Limelight Networks introduced its next generation platform yesterday, enabling content to be streamed to more devices including smartphones, TVs, gaming consoles and widgets. Limelight’s new XD Platform deploys a new patent-pending “Adaptive Intelligence” technology that automatically calibrates the needs of each platform and adapts the network settings as needed.
Amazon unveiled a new mobile payment processing service, including a set of open APIs to allow mobile developers to provide payment options for their customers within individual apps. The service also enables “1-click” checkout options, as offered on Amazon.com.
Politically-slanted cable news viewing pretty much falls along party lines so it makes no sense to try and reach Republicans by running ads with Keith Olbermann, confirms Tivo‘s new Power||Watch ratings service. The service’s second-by-second data is able to pinpoint exactly which types of programs households affiliated with each party preferred to watch, and in July Republican’s didn’t even watch one second of MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann. (Similarly, FOX News’ The O’Reilly Factor managed just a .01 rating among Democrats.) Prime-time shows more popular with Republicans in July included Army Wives, America’s Got Talent and The Bachelorette. Democrat-friendly shows included Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List and Top Chef Masters. TNT’s The Closer managed to draw viewers from both parties.
Is Flash finally coming to the iPhone? Kind of. Adobe intrigued developers yesterday announcing that programmers will be able to convert native Flash applications into apps that work on the iPhone with help of a new developer tool. Adobe also said the upcoming version 10.1 of the Flash video player will also finally support HTTP streaming, working on mobile platforms such as Android, BlackBerry, Palm’s web OS and Nokia’s Symbian.
Nokia and Adobe also announced more than 35 funded multi-screen applications as part of the joint Open Screen Project Fund, launched to help incubate creative apps for Nokia’s Ovi store. Funded apps include twitter client Twittle from Flash Widgets, LLC and MyFestival Guide from Little Big Ideas, an interactive moving map and guide to the 2nd largest music festival in Europe.
Univision Interactive Media launched the free Univision Movil iPhone App on the App Store powered by GoTV Networks, featuring short and long-form content from some of Univision’s top-rated shows. Browse among video categories including news, entertainment, soccer, TV shows, sports, horoscopes and special events.
MySpace has tapped former Fox TV distribution and Gemstar-TV Guide finance executive Mark Rosenbaum to serve as its new Chief Financial Officer, a newly created position. Mark will report to new MySpace CEO Own Van Natta.
L.A.-based creative agency David&Goliath named former Adweek “Man About Town” columnist Neilan Tyree as Chief Marketing Officer, Head of New Business, a newly created position. He reports to David Angelo, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer.
The Wall Street Journal appointed Tokyo Bureau Chief Yumiko Ono to oversee the Journal’s planned Japanese-language website.
The How-to video category continues to attract a lot of attention from media companies and venture capitalists because it fits so perfectly into the medium of online video. Instructional or knowledge based videos are short, snackable and relatively easy to monetize because they can be segmented by interest and distributed widely across the net. How-to syndication site 5min has just struck an ambitious partnership with Scripps Networks to offer ad supported programming from networks including HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network and Fine Living. Scripps will contribute thousands of clips to 5min’ site and as well as its affiliates via its contextual “VideoSeed” syndication platform, which generates 22 million unique viewers monthly and the company says reaches an aggregate potential 250 million unique users/month. Scripps will directly sell advertising not only on its own inventory but also to home and food-themed videos across the 5min network. This partnership could be a model for other platforms and content providers if it produces real revenue results. It’s all about relevance in this space and 5min should have a built in advantage here.
