10/30/12
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 30, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Univision Deportes locked in a 10-year deal to broadcast CONCACAF’s tournaments, handing the channel exclusive Spanish and Portuguese U.S. broadcast rights to the Gold Cup, Champions League and other major tournaments. The deal was signed by Jeffrey Webb, president of CONCACAF, and Juan Carlos Rodriguez, president of Univision Deportes, on Univision Network’s own sports entertainment program Republica Deportiva (I think more deals should be inked that way) and marks the largest in CONCACAF’s history. Matches will now run on Univision Deportes platforms, including Univision, TeleFutura, Galavision, Univision Deportes Network, online and on mobile.
The San Francisco Giants sweep for the World Series crown drew 15.5 million viewers Sunday night, according to Nielsen. Game 4 posted an 8.9/14 fast-national rating/share. FOX reports that the network is projected to win both Saturday (Game 3) and Sunday nights in the Adults 18-49 demographic, giving the network a win each World Series night this year. Overall, the 2012 World Series averaged a 7.6/12 rating/share and 12.7 million viewers, down from last year with final numbers still on the way. San Francisco led all markets with a 38.7/64 for Game 4, scoring the best rating of any MLB game in that market since Game 7 of the 2002 World Series between the Angels and the Giants. Detroit delivered a 37.9/53 for the game.
NBC’s coverage of the Saints/Broncos SNF game delivered an 11.4 overnight score going against the World Series. That is off 22% from the comparable game last year.
Time Warner Cable SportsNet inked a long-term agreement with the West Coast Conference to air a minimum of 15 live WCC men’s basketball games this season, as well as other sporting events from the league throughout Southern California. The network’s WCC schedule will feature Southern California schools Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine and the University of San Diego, as well as BYU, Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s. The season tips off on Jan. 05 at 1:30p with LMU/St. Mary’s.
The PGA Tour released the 2013 FedExCup Season schedule, featuring 36 Regular Season tournaments and the four FedExCup Playoff events that wrap up with the Tour Championship by Coca-Cola Sept. 19-22. Changes in the 2013 schedule include shifting The Mayakoba Golf Classic off of its February slot to a fall date and moving the Valero Texas Open Masters Tournament away from The Masters. The regular season begins with the Hyundai Tournament of Champions from Hawaii on Golf Channel starting Dec. 31.
Speaking of which, Long Drivers of America announced a new, long-term broadcast partnership with Golf Channel for the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship, which will now move to Golf Channel in 2013 after 17 years on ESPN. The Championship will move next year and be showcased throughout October on Golf Channel through three primetime specials and the first-ever live, two-hour finale. In addition, NBC will air a 60-minute recap show of the entire RWLDC later in the year, which will mark the first time golf’s premier long drive event in its 38-year history will be seen on network television.
CBS Sports announced its SEC on CBS football game for Saturday, Nov. 10 at noon, selecting the Arkansas/South Carolina game. Tim Brando, Steve Beuerlein and reporter Marty Snider will call the action. CBS Sports will also broadcast an SEC game at 3:30p that day, although the pick won’t be announced until next week.
Baseball season isn’t over quite yet. ESPN2 offers the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards Show tonight at 9:30p from ESPN’s Baseball Tonight studio in Bristol, Conn. Steve Berthiaume hosts the one-hour event with analysts John Kruk and Nomar Garciaparra. Guest presenters are set to include Sandy Alomar Jr. and MLB Hall of Famers Andre Dawson and Ozzie Smith announcing the winners.
HRTV is scheduling a documentary about the career of the legendary Zenyatta on Friday, Nov. 2 at 10p. While the HRTV broadcast is thirty minutes, it represents part of an in-depth 60-minute DVD that will be released over the holidays at the Zenyatta website.
