Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, October 30, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker lashed out at Apple at benefit hosted by Syracuse’s Newhouse School of Communications according to reports, claiming its inflexible pricing practices have destroyed the music business and are poised to do the same to online video. NBCU, which earned just $15 million in revenue during the last year of its deal with Apple, had been pushing for the right to charge more per episode for hit shows and to share in some of the revenue Apple earned from hardware sales before talks to renew its deal collapsed. He also defended the viability of the just-launched Hulu.com. Mr. Zucker noted NBC.com served up 50 million streams of TV shows during the month of October, proving there is ample demand for full-length shows on the web.
CNN is launching a virtual news bureau on Second Life, reports Mediaweek. Unlike Reuters, which deploys a real journalist on the site, CNN is extending its i-Report concept by asking Second Life residents to contribute news, photos and videos. CNN-branded kiosks will be scattered throughout the community, so avatars will never be far away from their news fix. And user generated content may be supplemented with advice from CNN personalities such as Larry King.
MTV Networks Music Group‘s MTV.com, VH1.com and CMT.com announced a new strategy to feature song lyrics throughout entertainment and gaming content offerings. Music programs such as VH1’s Boxset or MTV’s Name That Tune will feature lyrics search capabilities that link to music videos, artist information screens and points of purchase for the songs. The brands will also work to develop lyrics-based trivia games for online and mobile platforms.
P&G Productions launched a new Flash-based site for the soap Guiding Light featuring a downloadable desktop player customizable by character and a community section allowing fans to upload pictures and share their thought about the show.
To commemorate National Adoptions Month, HallmarkChannel.com will stream all 13 episodes of its original series Adoption beginning Nov. 1, the first full-length program the network has offered online. Hallmark Channel is also offering affiliates co-branded broadband cross-channel spots to promote the event.
ABC Digital Media is producing a daily 5-minute countdown show beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 31 leading up to the Country Music Awards show to air on ABC on Nov. 7. ABC.com, CMAA.com, mobile partners and ABC affiliates will also stream a live 3-hour red carpet show before the telecast.
Animal Planet began production on a new series based on its website Petfinder.com that helps match families with pets from local shelters. The 13-part one-hour show is being produced by 3Ball Productions and will be hosted by wildlife expert Jarod Miller, Rachael Ray and dog trainer to the stars Dina Zaphiris.
Music Choice named Taylor Swift as the featured artist for next month’s Fresh Crops series, available on demand and online from Nov. 12.

eBay’s voice-over-IP service Skype launched its long awaited mobile handset service enabling Skype users to place free calls away from their PCs. The White Phone, powered by iSkoot and British carrier Hutchison 3 Group, launched in the UK over the weekend with plans to launch in several more European and Asian territories by Christmas and in the U.S. sometime next year. Skype has over 2.5 million registered users in the UK and some 246 million users worldwide.
During MySpace/MTV.com‘s Presidential Dialogue Barack Obama promised to make net neutrality the law of the land if he were elected president. “Facebook, MySpace, Google might not have been started if you had not had a level playing field for whoever has the best idea,” he noted. The statement was given in response to a question posed by a former AT&T network engineer, the top rated query on 10questions.com’s interactive poll.
Gannett Co. acquired a 50% stake in Tribune‘s Metromix.com network of local entertainment sites. The joint venture will focus on expanding sites to cover the top 30 U.S. markets in the coming months.
Verizon added 202,000 new FiOS TV subscribers during the third quarter, giving the service a total of 717,000 subscribers as of the end of September. FiOS TV was available to 4.7 million homes – an average penetration rate of 15.2%.
Hitwise launched a new Clickstream report differentiating between new and repeat traffic a website receives in a given day, week or month. The research should help marketers better analyze spikes and drops in visits. For instance, among social networking sites 6.23% of Facebook visitors for the week ending Oct. 20, 2007 were new users.
Broadband video ad network YuMe signed an agreement to sell and serve ads for DAVE Networks, the P2P IPTV system that provides online video, social networking and blogging platforms for content providers such as NBC Universal. As part of the deal, YuMe will also serve ads into NEXT.TV, an IPTV service powered by DAVE Networks and made available on HP consumer notebooks.
New York-based CheckM8 signed on to become the preferred online ad platform for Cyber Communications, affiliate of Japanese ad giant Dentsu. CheckM8’s AdVantage platform offers publishers inventory management tools, a forecasting engine and rich media production tools.
HOLA Networks launched the first premium online display advertising network targeted exclusively to Hispanics living in the U.S. through a strategic partnership with 24/7 Real Media. The new network opens with approximately 4.5 million unique users in the U.S. and will meet the needs of the U.S. Hispanic advertising market by offering updated optimization tools and segmentation capabilities. HOLA Networks includes international websites in Spanish that have audience penetration in the U.S. in addition to other U.S. Hispanic websites reaching niche and hard-to-find audiences.

Video is the star of the long-awaited Hulu.com, the online video portal/distribution service launched in private beta format yesterday by NBC Universal and News Corp. The site kicked off with an impressive array of full-length ad-supported shows from the Fox, NBC and more than 15 content partners including Sony Pictures and MGM Studios, which just joined the service over the weekend. Its look features lots of white space, and the interface allows you to search by title, browse by genre, or follow the crowd by viewing the most popular episodes or clips. Basic community features such as “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” rating options are available, but a social networking site it is not. But it does allow users to embed content elsewhere, taking advantage of the viral nature of the web. A cool editing tool allows you to clip and send just a segment of a show you want to share.
Correction : Stephen T. Colbert actually had nothing to do with formation of the Facebook profile that gathered more than 1 million members in support of his mock candidacy. The page was started by a 16-year-old high school student after watching Colbert declare his intentions to run on his show on Oct. 16. Here’s a link to the clip in which he declares his candidacy.
