Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
10/02/12
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 2, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
I’ve Met The Devil and She Wears Pumps
Through a friend I met a woman who used to be in charge of hiring people for a mid-sized company. I asked her about her hiring process for all those who had applied.
Her process was simple, she said as soon as she looked at someone, she knew whether she was going to hire them and the rest of the interview was just going through the motions so the applicant didn’t later sue. I really thought she was joking at first, but she wasn’t, she was completely serious and at ease with her decisions.
I know that many people, myself included, make snap judgements about people, but most of allow for the possibilities that these judgements may be wrong.
This woman did not suffer from this inconvenience, she knew she was right and prided herself on it.
I asked if she ever had to fire someone she had hired. She said yes. I was quiet, allowing the logic of her statement sink in. How could she always be right, and yet have to fire some of those she had hired?
Didn’t happen.
So I pushed, “If you are always right with your three second assessment, why would you ever have to fire anyone that you hired?”
“Some people just get lazy after a while.”
So I asked one last question, “If you took more time during the interview, and actually got to know the person you were interviewing, do you think it is possible that you might be able to weed out some of the lazy people you eventually have to fire?”
And just when I thought nothing this woman could say would surprise me, she replied, “I can’t help it if people get lazy.”
Mercifully, she no longer holds that position and I wonder how she feels when she goes into an interview now.
I wish I had some sage advice on what to do when confronted with this situation, which I believe and hope is rare, but I don’t.
If you have any horror stories about a job interview, please send them to me, perhaps we will publish them a future edition.

ROOKIE BLUE Feeling Unsettled From the Ups and Downs of Work?
by Jessica Sitomer
As a police rookie, Andy McNally has ups and downs at work daily. She is passionate about her job, but the stress level is undeniable. But rookies didn’t sign up for a predictable job, they signed up to protect and serve. They don’t know what their next job will be, and they certainly don’t know if it will be their last.
Different jobs present different lifestyles. In the entertainment industry the majority of people worry about where the next job is coming from, or how long will the job last, or is this career going to give lifelong stability?
It is not a feeling that many people are comfortable in, especially if they have to support a family, or feel emotionally unstable when they’re not expressing their creativity and doing what they are passionate about.
The ideal, of course, would be to know what the future holds. But we all know that’s not possible. It can be a challenge to look at this subject in a positive light, after all, I can’t make you any promises, and I can’t give you any guarantees. However I can give you some advice that should make you feel better if you choose to follow it. Here it is:
1. Make a list of pros and cons about working in the entertainment industry. In other words, what’s great about it, and what’s not great about it.
2. Make a list of pros and cons about 4 other industries. I usually suggest Investment Banking, Teaching, Farming, and Retail. Feel free to choose your own.
3. Write down other careers that you’re interested in pursuing.
Here’s what tends to happen when I do this exercise in a seminar setting.
1. The attendees don’t have an answer for #3, they love what they do they just wish they could do it all of the time and have stability.
2. The attendees recognize that there are other unstable jobs out there. Farmers tend to be passionate about what they do, they work from home and in many cases with their family, however, there are so many factors which are out of the farmer’s control which will determine if the crop is profitable each year.
Retail has proven to be extremely unstable in recent years. Investment bankers have the potential to make a lot of money with pretty decent stability, however, the stress is off the charts, and they don’t have time to spend all of the money they are making or even spend much time with their families.
Teaching is a very stable job if you have tenure, especially if you’re in the teacher’s union. However, the pay is average, and with all of the forced curriculums, most of the creativity that drew people to teaching, is now being taken from them, causing massive job dissatisfaction.
In other words, there are pros and cons to ALL jobs. When you take the time to look at the “grass,” it isn’t greener on the other side. Some years, you grow beautiful gardens, other years you get nothing but weeds.
The question you must answer for yourself, is what to focus on: The Pros or The Cons? Because if you choose to focus on the cons, you’re going to have a very difficult journey. If you choose to focus on the pros, you may see solutions you never noticed before.
And Action!
1. Take the time to do the exercise in this article.
2. Once you determine your ‘cons’ look for other solutions to eliminate them. For example: if being out of work puts a financial burden on you, how can you create supplemental or parallel income so you can continue to pursue your dream while maintaining financial stability?
In Rookie Blue, Andy wants to protect and serve. In a sense, you want the same thing: to protect your dream and to serve the world.

What if I draw a blank and can’t answer a question?
This is why it’s important to do prep work. When you feel prepared you are less likely to draw a blank. But should you find yourself in that position, start by taking a deep breath, and then remind yourself that the person interviewing you is looking to fill the position, so he/she wants you to do well.
Ask any questions that may help you understand why the interviewer is asking the question so you can come up with an answer. If you don’t know an answer to a question, it almost always pays to be honest about it.
Do all employers negotiate salary?
No. Some positions have a set salary and others are negotiable. There are no set rules.
