Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 29, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Nielsen will count mobile-device viewing as part of its traditional TV measurement report in time for the 2014-2015 TV season. Any show or digital content with the same amount of ad load and timeline as in traditional TV programming will be included. Clients will begin receiving the necessary software kits in mid-November.
In yet another twist in the Aereo online streaming saga, Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, and Charter Communications may be in talks to create a similar service. Bloomberg reports the trio are considering capturing free broadcast-TV signals like Aereo’s service to avoid paying for high transmission fees in the future.
In other words: Broadcast transmission fees are expected to double from the current $3.1 billion to $6.1 billion by 2018, so it’s no surprise that some in the TV industry are thinking of taking a page from Aereo’s playbook.
Samsung has made a $100 million deal with the NBA for its tablets and televisions to be used courtside by the refs during matches to review plays. Samsung will also partner on marquee events like NBA Summer League.
Netflix may be creating a third season of House of Cards, according to Deadline. A deal was already in place for two seasons; the second season will premiere early next year.
Netflix and CBS Corporation announced a licensing agreement for all eight seasons of Showtimes‘s Dexter. The first four seasons will be available on Oct. 31; seasons five through eight will be available beginning January 2014.
The Discovery Network is promoting its first scripted series, Klondike (set to premiere in early 2014) with a four-part digital interactive play. It will feature a breakdown of the history of the California gold rush at www.Discovery.com/Klondike. Fans can also count down to the premiere on Klondike’s Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Reelz launched an interactive companion web site for its upcoming JFK: The Smoking Gun, a documentary examining the facts behind the assassination of President Kennedy. The site (www.jfkthesmokinggun.com) offers an interactive crime scene map, ballistics and medical evidence and video clips. Smoking Gun premieres Sunday, November 3 at 8p, ahead of the 50 anniversary of the JFK assassination on November 22.

Tremor Video announced a new suite of guaranteed-pricing models for in-stream video ad campaigns. The new arrangement means that advertisers will pay only for ads that reach a brand’s target audience, when an ad is 100% viewable and completed, and when a viewer’s intent/favorability for a brand is positively shifted. “CPS (cost-per-brand shift) and CPQ (cost-per-conquest), join CPE as a powerful suite of solutions for brand marketers,” CEO of Tremor Video Bill Day told Cynopsis.
Digital and search marketing agency 3Q Digital says that companies should get down and doggy if they want to make some money from Halloween this year. That’s because 3Q discovered that “Halloween costumes for dogs” gets 4,400 monthly searches, according to Google’s Keyword Planner. Or, go demo: “Baby Halloween costumes” and “Halloween costumes for women” have some of the top monthly searches with 27,100 hits each.

The number of children 8 and under who have used mobile devices has hiked from 38 to 72 percent since 2011, according to a study released yesterday, “Zero to Eight: Children’s Media Use in America 2013.” But while mobile viewing is gaining, with TV viewing is down 12 minutes a day, television still dominates children’s media use, says the study.
