Nielsen announced it is incorporating audiences viewing TV content on digital devices into traditional TV measurement for the 2014-15 season. Content not eligible for TV ratings will be included in Nielsen digital ratings; the company will make a software developer kit that enables a unified coding approach available in mid-November. Megan Clarken, EVP, Global Product Leader, described it as “a single client solution that supports both the linear and dynamic ad models. This unified coding approach for video enables measurement to follow content across screens and models.”

~ IN THE NEWS ~

Ellen Degeneres has a comedy in development at NBC. The project tells the story of a lesbian character who gets pregnant by her straight male best friend. Liz Feldman (2 Broke Girls) will write the script and exec produce with DeGeneres and A Very Good Production‘s Jeff Kleeman.

Samsung and the NBA entered into a comprehensive marketing and technology partnership. Fans will get custom content, and NBA refs will be provided with the electronics company’s tablets, and use Samsung technology courtside to review plays. Samsung will also partner on marquee events like NBA Summer League.

USA Network launched an anti-hunger campaign yesterday with Feeding America to support food banks over the holiday season. PSAs will guide viewers to Modern Family web sites, where they’ll be encouraged to contribute, with the net matching donations up to $30,000. Modern Family reruns started airing on USA in September.

Discovery‘s highest-rated series, Gold Rush, is back for season four – and the teams are taking bigger risks than ever trying to hit a golden payday. But on the November 1 episode, a viewer is the one who hits pay dirt, when the winner of the show’s $100,000 “Go For Gold Sweepstakes” is announced. Docu-series airs Fridays at 9p.

Untold Stories of the ER has been transplanted from Sundays to Fridays. The eighth season of the Discovery Fit & Health docu-series continues Friday, November 1 at 10p, with encores continuing to run Saturdays at 9p on TLC.

The number of children 8 and under who have used mobile devices has hiked from 38 to 72 percent since 2011, according to a study released yesterday, “Zero to Eight: Children’s Media Use in America 2013.” But while mobile viewing is gaining, with TV viewing is down 12 minutes a day, television still dominates children’s media use, says the study.

The biggest misconception about using social media to increase ratings? “That it’s a silver bullet for success,” says Dana Ortiz, VP Brand Marketing for Syfy. “Like any other new way to tell and sell a story, authenticity, transparency and reward, along with reach, are still the ways to build consistent brand loyalty.” Ortiz and other experts share strategies for generating the kind of excitement that boosts viewership at the just-announced November 21 Cynopsis webinar, Leveraging Social Media to Drive Tune-In and Ratings.

Screenvision has extended its agreement with Nielsen to provide weekly ratings for in-cinema audiences – so Screenvision can sell ads TV-style. Jim Tricarico, CRO, Screenvision, says cinema is a great way to showcase television: “Both broadcasters and cable networks find that in-cinema, and the grand canvas of the big screen, are a great way to promote their new shows.”

Changes are in store on Moonshiners, returning to Discovery for season three, when shiner Tim Smith makes a startling announcement. “Tim’s going to realize a lifelong dream,” Discovery exec producer Joseph Schneier tells Cynopsis, “and by doing so he’s opening a Pandora’s box that will change moonshining in Southern Virginia forever.” Show comes back Tuesday, November 5 at 9p, followed by the return of Porter Ridge at 10p.

CNN original series Inside Man will come back for a sophomore season, with documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock diving deep into topics like celebrity and income disparity. “Inside Man is the perfect example of the type of programing our audience is looking for when we aren’t covering the news of the day,” said CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker of the show, returning in spring 2014.

~ CASTING ~

Janet Montgomery (Made in Jersey) will star in WGN America‘s Salem. The drama makes its debut in 2014.

UP is celebrating the season with Halloween episodes of past series. Included on its October 31 slate are The Waltons, 7th Heaven, Heartland and Moesha.

~ RATINGS ~

The World Series is scoring nicely for Fox, with Sunday’s Game 4 – the most-watched since 2009 – averaging a 4.4 rating/11 share in A18-49 and 15.4 million viewers, per early Nielsen numbers. That’s likely not enough to overpower the NFL in the demos, though. NBC‘s Sunday Night Football averaged a 5.6/12 in A18-49 and 14.9 million viewers in preliminary numbers.

ABC‘s scripted dramas fared just fine against the sports competition Sunday night. According the early numbers, Once Upon a Time (2.2/5 A18-49 and 7 million viewers) and Betrayal (1.0/3 A18-49 and 3.4 million viewers) rose a tenth of point week to week in the young demo, while Revenge held steady with 1.5/3 in A18-49 and 5.6 million viewers. At 7p, America’s Funniest Home Videos rose three tenths, to 1.4.4 and 6.1 million viewers.

But… no one could beat The Walking Dead in the A18-49 demo on Sunday night. The AMC zombie drama averaged a 6.8 rating and 12.9 million total viewers for its 9p telecast.

Friday’s season four premiere of Gold Rush was the number one ad-supported program among P/M/W25-54 and P/M18-49; Discovery Channel was the number one network in all of television among M18-49 on Friday. During season three, Gold Rush was the number one program on television in that demo for seven straight weeks.
