Cynopsis: Classified Advantage

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 23, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

The Thank You Note

One piece of advice that is often overlooked, is writing a simple thank you note to whomever interviewed you.

There is a certain amount of human nature at play here. Once the interview is over, it’s common to believe the decision is now out of our hands and there is nothing more we can do about it. It comes often, as a relief.

But there is one more thing you can do, one that just might get you the job you really want, the thank you note.

The thank you note benefits you in several very important ways: It reminds the interviewer of who you are, it demonstrates common courtesy that most other interviewees will neglect, it shows just how much you want the job, and it separates you from anyone who did not show the same initiative.

Pretty good stuff.

There are some basic rules to the thank you note.

Make it brief. You can lose everything you stood to gain by sending a three page letter to the interviewer. They don’t have time for that.

Remind the person of your value and your interest in the company. This should be one to two sentences at most, and do not copy something from your resume or cover letter. Write about something that occurred during the interview that put you in a positive light. This should also be more informal than your resume.

Let the person know that you understand what the job requires and that you are able to do it very well.

And lastly, ask the company to contact you no matter what their decision is. This plants the idea that the interviewer needs to get back to you. Always a good thing. Even if the answer is no, sometimes the interviewer will provide you with information about another job, either within the company or within the industry.

Even if you receive no response, what have you lost except perhaps five minutes of your time? I think you’ll agree, it is well worth the effort.

SURVIVOR Thrust Yourself Into Adventure
by Jessica Sitomer

With 25 seasons under its belt, Survivor is adventure at its wildest! Regular people like you, thrusting themselves into an outrageous adventure, in an exotic location, with a group of strangers. The competitions are challenging, the group dynamic is combative, and the food is scarce. But every season, a new group says, “Bring it on!”

Do you want your career to go from ordinary to extraordinary? Then like the Survivors, you have to shake things up, seek out adventure. What you’ll find is, when you can be adventurous in your life, you will become adventurous in your career. So start with some cool life adventures to build your courage muscles. Once you build the muscle you’ll be able to flex it whenever you need it in both your personal life and your professional life.

Here are some ways to thrust yourself into adventure:

1.  Sign up for deals. Services like Groupon and GottaHalfIt offer daily deals on everything from exotic restaurants and hot stone massage to NASCAR driving and tandem skydiving. Not only can you get a great deal, you will also get great ideas for adventures you never thought of.

2.  Crate an A-List. You’ve heard of a Bucket List? It’s a list of all of the things you want to do before you die. An A-list for this purpose is an Adventure List. Make a list of 12 adventures you’d like to experience this year. If you focus on it, you’re more likely to do it.

3.  Get people involved. Great reason to do something non-industry related with industry contacts AND it will bring you closer together.

This is one of those life and career changing crossroads. When you push yourself out of your comfort zone it grows. With each adventure you expand, until perhaps, discomfort becomes a thing of the past.

And Action!

1.  GO FOR IT! Plan an adventure.

Once Survivors spend time on their island, there is no to go back to being ordinary. Their futures are changed forever, as are they. If you spent the next year building your adventure muscles, where and who will you be 12 months from now?

Questions from our Readers
Answered by
Jessica Sitomer

Since I don’t like confrontation and conflict, should I even bother with salary negotiation?

If you don’t care about settling for the salary they offer instead of professionally negotiating for your worth, then, absolutely, don’t bother. There, I just confronted you… it wasn’t so bad, was it? Now go out there and get the salary you deserve!

I don’t even know the salary/pay for the job I am seeking. How can I find out prior to the interview?

You can start by Googling: how do I find salaries for jobs. You can also reach out to HR people at other companies who hire the same position. Reach out to your contacts to see if they know anyone working in the same position who would be willing to have an informational conversation with you. Remember, even if you find out a salary for a job, there is always a salary “range” based on experience and other factors.
