Cynopsis: DIGITAL

10/23/07

Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, October 23, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Sony’s Minisode Network is moving beyond its home on MySpace to carve out a presence on Sony’s user generated video site Crackle.com and will add AOL and Joost as distribution partners. The network, which condenses full-length episodes into bite-sized shorts, will also introduce new shows including I Dream of Jeannie and The Jeffersons, increasing its catalogue to 18 shows overall. Pepsi is sponsoring the retro Minisode channel on Crackle with 15-second pre-rolls.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

AT&T is making Napster’s entire music catalog available for direct-to-mobile purchase next month, adding 5 million songs to a new service called Napster Mobile. While not compatible with the iPhone, the catalog will be accessible via AT&T’s network for the price of $1.99/song or 5 tracks for $7.49. Matchbox Twenty’s new album “Exile on Mainstream” will kick off the service.

MySpace launched its first original scripted web series in collaboration with Iron Sink Media. The first of 45 episodes of Roommates launched yesterday on MySpaceTV with new episodes debuting each weekday at 1:00 pm PT/4:00 pm ET.  The serial, about 8 former college roomies who move to L.A. to join a reality show, is the company’s first co-development project and the first original web series created specifically for MySpaceTV.

Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group launched a new ad-free kids subscription service called MyNoggin.com, featuring curriculum-based learning through game play built around favorite Nick Jr. and NOGGIN characters. In addition to the direct-to-consumer site, priced at $5.95 for a 12-month commitment or $9.95 month-to-month, Charter and Cox will launch the service on their broadband sites in November as an add-on for their subscribers.

Si TV launched two new social networking sites entertainment.sitv.com and trends.sitv.com targeting 18-34 year-old acculturated Latinos. The sites feature video clips and articles about the latest music, film, gaming, cars and fashion trends with the usual community features including user ratings and content sharing. Latino artists are encouraged to post their own profiles to reach Si TV’s targeted audience. The sites replace similar features on SiTV.com, which will now focus exclusively on Si TV’s linear programming.

Oxygen launched its second web-only series, Abbey & Janice: Beauty & The Best, on SheDidWhat.tv, the network’s broadband channel. A companion to Oxygen original The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency, it follows Janice and British Next Top Model runner-up Abbey Clancy around London as the former supermodel mentors the up and coming covergirl.

VOOM HD Network‘s Animania HD acquired three new animated HD series to premiere in November, including the world premiere of Animalia, based on the best-selling picture book of the same name.

Cynopsis Weekender College Edition returns on November 15th!  Here’s how it works — if you’re currently a college student here or abroad, submit to Cynopsis your essay of 350 words or less on any topic relating to television.  If your essay is one of four chosen as the most insightful, original, humorous and/or well-written, it will included in a special College Edition of Weekender.  All four winning essay writers are awarded $350. Entries must be emailed no later than Friday, November 9th to me at [email protected], subject Weekender College Edition.  Students – be sure to include your name, age, college, college year, and major (if you know it), and how you can be contacted.   Good luck!

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

MobiTV extended its licensing arrangement with Sprint giving the mobile content aggregator access to Sprint’s Pivot customers who sign up through Comcast, Cox, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks. The multiyear deal also calls for enhanced video quality to include full-screen viewing, a revamped user interface and support for more mobile devices. MobiTV also announced it surpassed the 3 million subscriber mark worldwide.

Joost
added a new channel from cable HD programming service Mojo, featuring a selection of Mojo originals including Three Sheets, After Hours with Daniel, The King of Miami and Uncorked with Billy Merritt.

SpiralFrog
signed a licensing agreement with Sony/ATV Music Publishing to expand its free ad-supported music download service. Sony becomes the start-up’s second major partner, joining Universal Music Group.

iThentic
and ITVS International announced a line-up of eight international award-winning filmmakers selected for their first online and mobile collaboration entitled the Global Mobile Project. The first series of short films will focus on food, glorious food.

Flycell struck an agreement with animation and film production studio Mobstar Media to aggregate content for distribution directly to mobile carrier decks in the United States.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Apple broke personal sales records across its various product divisions during its 4th quarter, selling 1.1 million iPhones, 10.2 million iPods and 2.1 million Mac computers, pushing revenues up by 67% to $904 million for the quarter. Like at Google, international sales continue to become more important, now accounting for 40% of overall sales. The company is sticking by its prediction of 10 million iPhones sold by next year.

Netflix also had a good quarter adding 286,000 net subscribers to bring its total to 7.02 million subs – a 24% increase over the same period last year. Third quarter profit rose to $15.7 million.

Tivo DVRs are finally beginning to roll out in Comcast‘s New England footprint, just in time for the World Series. Comcast plans to gradually introduce Tivo boxes across its footprint in the coming months.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

CBS Mobile has teamed up with mobile search and advertising specialist Medio Systems, Inc. to add search capabilities and search-enabled advertising opportunities to its CBS Mobile websites. Medio Systems will provide CBS Mobile users the ability to search and navigate content on CBS Sports Mobile (wap.cbssports.com), CBS Mobile News (wap.cbsnews.com), and CW Mobile (wap.cwtv.com) websites.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Four episodes of TNT’s The Closer again topped Tivo’s Stop||Watch DVR viewing rankings in August. However, similar to the previous month, none of the commercials that aired during the program made the Top 10.  In fact, nine of the Top 10 commercial spots in August aired during Big Brother 8 – only the 10th highest rated program.  Stop||Watch currently monitors 15 networks: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CW, TNT, TBS, USA, CNN, ESPN, DISC, NIK, MTV, COM and HGTV.

Verizon Wireless announced that its games download revenue increased 38% in September year-to-date 2007 compared to September of last year. Verizon Wireless customers have paid for 50 million game transactions so far this year.

Hitwise
launched a new Retail Data Center, a publicly available website providing weekly online shopping trend data based on how U.S. internet users interact with more than 20,000 online shopping sites across 21 shopping categories including Video Games, Electronics and Apparel. Data Center sites have also launched for the UK, New Zealand, Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

CMO
& Head of Customer Experience Division Cammie Dunaway is the latest senior executive to exit Yahoo. Her last day will be Nov. 2.

Bellevue, WA.-based mobile messaging marketing firm SinglePoint named Phillippe Poutonnet as Director of Marketing. He reports to Rich Begert, President & CEO.

Columnist Rick Reilly will join ESPN as the back-page Columnist for ESPN The Magazine and as a regular columnist for ESPN.com. He reports to John Skipper, ESPN EVP/Content.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

AMCTV.com added its first feature-length films as part of its annual Monsterfest celebration, including cult classics Jack Hill’s Spider Baby and Francis Ford Coppola’s Dementia 13. The net is actually works fairly well for shoestring budget flicks like these. The Monsterfest microsite features lots of frightful goodies including blogs, contests, polls (ie: Who’s the Sickest Psycho?) slide shows and exclusive interviews with The Exorcist’s Linda Blair and 30 Days of Nights’ Steve Niles.

And a little housekeeping note — there will not be a Cyn Digital edition tomorrow. The only edition will be Cynopsis, and it will be decidedly abbreviated and singularly focused as it will provide a brief recap of the events at tonight’s Cynopsis Foundation Charity Dinner & Auction.
