Netflix surpassed HBO, clocking in with 40 million paid U.S. subscribers, according to its third quarter earnings report, released yesterday. HBO is estimated to have 28.7 million subscribers as of last month.
Madonna and Vice Media’s Art For Freedom video bundle that was released last month exclusively on BitTorrent has hit 1.2 million downloads. Variety reports BitTorrent’s partnership with Vice is part of its push to create more original content to help shed its “piracy” reputation.
Electronic dance music star Tiesto returned in the second season of Believe Entertainment’s YouTube series In the Booth yesterday. Season two includes four new episodes that follow Tiesto as he DJs around the world. See it at http://www.youtube.com/tiesto.
People.com live-streamed Hollywood Film Awards red carpet yesterday, to herald the start of awards season. The site also included pics from the backstage photo booth.
The Climate Reality Project held a Google Hangout with Mashable, Do Something, and former Vice President Al Gore yesterday. The hangout discussed climate change with the hashtag #CostOfCarbon, and focused on how to use technology, activism and social media to find solutions.

CEO Mike Henry of YouTube measurement platform Outrigger Media spoke with Cynopsis about what its analytics platform, Open Slate, reveals about the latest trends in YT advertising. “The intersection of native video, programmatic and brand advertising is the most fascinating thing that is going on with YouTube ads right now,” he says. Johnson & Johnson launched a campaign on Tumblr urging people to recycle more items from the bathroom (only one out of five do, according to a report commissioned by the company). “Care to Recycle” includes a video that visitors are encouraged to share, at www.caretorecycle.com. Content is shareable within the Tumblr platform as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

Mobile is the cheese on Domino’s pizza, according to latest numbers that show that 35 percent of the company’s $2 billion digital sales are pouring in from the mobile app. Other pizza chains like Pizza Hut and Papa Johns are only just now experimenting in the mobile universe, according to Mobile Marketer. Domino’s app has been downloaded nearly 6 million times.
Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing its annual Holiday Programming Guide, which comes out on November 26 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has holiday-themed programming airing from November 27 through December 31, please send your listings to Lynn Leahey at [email protected] no later than Monday November 18. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lynn (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).
Facebook announced on its blog yesterday that the site’s average referral traffic to online publishers has increased by 170 percent from just a year ago. The New York Times traffic has jumped by 208 percent; BuzzFeed, by almost 900 percent. Gigaom also says that Facebook will soon release a tool called Stories to Share so publishers can see which pieces are most…shared.

Eric Sherman has been appointed CEO of health and wellness company Veria Living, overseeing its TV and digital operations. Sherman had been a GM at VH1 and MTV nets and spent the last three years as Steven Tyler’s manager. “With Steven Tyler it was a wild ride. Now I’m working with Veria Living, a brand that helps people lead healthier lives – and the phone doesn’t ring at 3:00am,” he quips.

Sony’s latest PlayStation 4 ad may have taken a hint from the success of Samsung’s nod to nostalgia in its newest commercial, called #PlayStationMemories. It starts with the picture of a boy’s room in 1995 that includes the first PlayStation model. The room transforms in its decor and and the PlayStation console as the years roll by.
