In the wake of its cancellation of Welcome to the Family, holder of the Thursday 8:30p slot, NBC announced a schedule shift that bumps Parks and Recreation for three weeks. In place of Parks this Thursday, October 24, The Voice will air from 8-9p. Next week’s Halloween-themed Parks ep will be replaced by a one-hour Saturday Night Live Halloween special. On Thursday, November 7, The Voice will air at 8p instead of 9p, where it would have preempted Sean Saves the World and The Michael J. Fox Show. Parks returns November 14.

~ IN THE NEWS ~

Fusion is getting an early morning boost for its Monday, October 28 launch. The upcoming news net for a “young, diverse and inclusive America,” a joint venture between Univision and Disney/ABC, will be celebrated on ABC’s Good Morning America and Univision’s Despierta America, with the morning shows simulcasting portions of their broadcasts on both networks, to a combined audience of 6 million viewers. Hosts from Fusion’s The Morning Show will also be on hand.

What do the launches of Fusion and El Rey (coming in December), English-language nets targeting young adults across cultures, mean for NUVOtv? Bring ’em on, CEO Michael Schwimmer tells Cynopsis. “We recognized the importance of the modern Latino audience long ago,” says Schwimmer. “The recent interest of ABC-Univision and Robert Rodriguez to serve our audience with Fusion and El Rey networks validates NUVOtv’s mission and will help create a more robust ‘marketplace’ for viewers, distributors and advertisers alike.”

Ad-supported cable nets again topped broadcast with over $10 billion in ad commitments at upfronts for the new season, reports AdAge, citing a Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau report. ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and The CW hauled in between $8.7 billion and $9.3 billion. Cable’s 4.3 percent increase year-to-year was significantly below the double digit increases in 2011 and 2010.

Announcing its third quarter numbers Monday, Netflix revealed it added 1.3 million U.S. paid subscribers, giving it 31.1 million – enough to pass HBO‘s approximate 28.7 million subs. The company’s stock, which hit a low of $53 a share in August 2012, closed at $355 a share on Monday.

Carol Burnett accepted the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor Sunday night at the Kennedy Center. “It was a long time in coming,” Burnett told the crowd in D.C., “but I understand because there are so many people funnier than I am, especially here in Washington.” The awards show will be broadcast on PBS stations Sunday, November 24.

In a major Olympics push, 20 NBCUniversal networks will simultaneously telecast promos for the games. The October 29 “Symphony Roadblock” starts the 100-day countdown to the event, launching a multi-platform marketing initiative. “We will use the full force of America’s largest media company to market the biggest Winter Olympics ever,” said John Miller, CMO of NBC Sports Group.

NBC‘s Sunday Night Football commands the most money for a 30-second spot, according to AdAge’s annual pricing survey, averaging $593,700 in upfront negotiations for the 2013-2014 season. Fox‘s American Idol came in second at $355,946 (down from its glory days of $500,000+). In third place was CBS hit The Big Bang Theory, at $316,912.

While Parks and Recreation draws a modest 3.27 viewers and a 1.3 rating in A18-49, the NBC comedy tops the charts in concentration of upscale young adult viewers, or the young demo living in households with income of $100,000 or more. The Los Angeles Times reports the show scores a 171 on the “upscale density index,” with 100 being an average concentration. In second place: ABC‘s Modern Family.

Animal activist and shock jock spouse Beth Stern will host Hallmark Channel‘s Kitten Bowl alongside Yankee play-by-play announcer John Sterling. The Super Bowl Sunday event guarantees homes for all the feline competitors (and programming for the football-phobic). Kitten Bowl, presented in association with the North Shore Animal League, airs Sunday, February 2 from 12p-9p.

~ COMING UP ~

Jon Lester is a little busy these days getting ready for the World Series, but while he’s waiting to shoot down the Cardinals, the Boston Red Sox pitcher can be seen hunting buck on Outdoor Channel‘s BioLogic and Drury’s Wildlife Obsession. The whitetail hunt in Missouri airs tonight at 10p; the Series race starts Wednesday, October 23 on Fox, at 8:07p.

Military Channel will broadcast a live telethon, Homeward Bound, to support American veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Alan Alda and Joe Mantegna will host the four-hour event, presented by support service Haven from the Storm, on Sunday, November 10 at 7p.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

ABC Family announced new episode premieres for three shows. Pretty Little Liars comes back Tuesday, January 7 at 8p, followed by Twisted at 9p. The third season of Switched at Birth starts Monday, January 13 at 8p, followed by the first of new eps for The Fosters at 9p. Also on January 7 the net will air a marathon of Liars, its top-rated series of all time, which topped 4 million total viewers in summer 2013.

Syfy‘s Face Off has been renewed for a sixth season. The finale of the makeup artist competition airs Tuesday, November 5 at 9p, with two spin-off specials airing November 12 and 19.

U.K.’s Channel 4 ordered The Island of the Lost Blokes, hosted by Bear Grylls, featuring 12 men “stripped of all the comforts of civilization and cast away on a remote deserted island for four weeks.” The Shine/Bear Grylls Ventures co-production debuts in 2014.

The BBC ordered two reality shows: a celebrity gymnastics competition series, with the working title Let’s Get Ready to Tumble, and home makeover show Your Home in Their Hands. Tumble will “turn the nation’s pop stars, actors, news readers and chefs into heroes of the high bars,” said the BBC, while Home has amateur decorators competing for a cash prize.

AXS TV is holding a hard-rock Halloween, featuring bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Alice Cooper in concert. The cornerstone of the night: KISS performing music from their KISS MONSTER album. Guitars start screaming at 3:30p on October 31.

~ RATINGS ~

Peyton Manning‘s return to Indianapolis as a Bronco instead of a Colt, not to mention a match-up that broke Denver’s 17-game regular season winning streak, was a big winner for NBC‘s Sunday Night Football. According to early numbers, the game averaged a 9.5 rating and 23 share in A18-49, and 25.9 million viewers, the highest-rated October primetime game since 1998, and 30 percent over fast nationals for last week’s game.

NBC‘s The Blacklist is the first broadcast series to add more than 6 million viewers from L+SD to Live+7, notes Deadline. The drama’s second ep averaged 17.9 million viewers in Live+7, up 57 percent from the original airing.

AMC‘s Walking Dead shaved 2 million viewers Sunday from its season premiere number, but still drew a giant 13.9 million viewers and 7.1 rating in A18-49, enough to scare off everything but football. Companion after-show Talking Dead scored 3.3 million in A18-49, to outdraw ABC‘s Betrayal (.9/2) and CBS‘s The Mentalist (1.2/3).
