Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 1, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Welcome to Leadership Lessons, a new, regular column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Dermot McCormack, Head of Connected Content at MTV, VH1, CMT and Logo.

What was your first leadership position, and what did you learn from the experience?

When I started as a founder of Flooz.com it was exciting, exhilarating and scary. I remember I learned whatever I did as a founder would make the news pipe good or bad. I had jobs before where I could succeed and mess up and not many people cared, and I realized that everything I did as the leader really did matter.

What does being a leader mean to you?

Being a leader is about being decisive. Making decisions is a key responsibility of a leader, and the parts of industry landscapes I’ve worked in with emerging platforms and media involve dealing with change. Part of leadership for me is making decisions, sometimes unpopular and risky decisions.

What does it mean to be a leader of emerging platforms within the television industry?

I think particularly my role involves harvesting ideas that make sense and being able to really help the company change. Sometimes change can be worrisome, but a big part of a job in a new emerging medium position in a larger traditional media company like MTV is packaging and representing that change and creating a consensus of change so it doesn’t feel as threatening. I think that’s part of leadership, to be able to express why change is good, and how initiatives are good in the long term. Communication, consensus and partnership bring success, particularly when leading and representing the evolution and revolution [of television].

If you could be in any profession other than television, what would it be?

I would be in a rock band, and play at big arenas. I love music, and I think if I had any other career to pursue it would be in the music industry. I sort of work with music now with finding artists and discovering new music, but it would be great to be around music all the time.

John Saade, executive vice president of alternative and late-night programming at ABC, is out. Saade was a key player in developing Dancing With the Stars and The Bachelor. No reason was given for his departure. Former E! executive Lisa Berger is expected to take replace him.

Michael Riley is exiting his post as president of ABC Family. It’s been reported that he is seeking a position with greater focus on international business. Riley is likely to depart next month.

Lionsgate CFO James Keegan is retiring, effective October 1. He’ll be replaced by James Barge, former executive vice president and CFO of Viacom. Keegan will remain on the board as a consultant until January 3, 2014 to assist with the transition.

Paul Fredericksen, President and General Manager of KCCI-TV, the Hearst Television Inc. CBS affiliate serving the Des Moines, Iowa, television market, will retire later this year. Frederickson has served in the post since 1986. His successor will be announced at a future date.

Zodiak Media has announced that David Frank will step down as group CEO in mid-October. Marc-Antoine d’Halluin, previously of Rubis Media Partners, will succeed him, effective October 15.

Jonathan Blum has been named President of Cisneros Media. He was previously Vice President and General Manager of Venevision.

Scot Safon has been named Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of The Weather Channel. Saffon last served as Executive Vice President for CNN, managing the HLN network.

TV One has named Donna Wilson as Executive Producer of weekday morning news program News One Now. Wilson previously worked on nonfiction projects, including TV One’s Deceived and Find Our Missing, Biography Channel‘s John Gotti and Crucibles of Courage, Paramount‘s Dr. Phil.

WNET, parent company of New York’s public television stations THIRTEEN and WLIW21 and operator of NJTV, has appointed Antonia Carew-Watts as Associate Counsel. She was previously an associate at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, focusing on intellectual property and entertainment law.

Ryan St. Peters has been promoted to Vice President, Sales and Business Development of Shaftesbury, one of Canada’s leading producers and distributors of original content for television and multiple platforms.

Telemundo Media has hired industry veteran Aileen Angulo as Senior Vice President, On-Air Promotions. Angulo formerly served as a creative and production consultant on high-profile branding projects for E!

Jay Marcus has been appointed Manager of Scripted Development, comedy and drama, at MTV. Marcus was last Creative Executive at Fake Empire.

Canada’s CBC has tapped Heather Conway to serve as Executive VP, English-language Services. She was previously Chief Business Officer at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Patrick Akushie has been appointed Regional Sales Manager in Cote Ouest‘s new office in Kinshasa. Akushie had been commercial manager for Agence France-Presse across Nigeria. The company also named Olivia Dadie as Digital Communications Specialist. Dadie came from Revolver 3, where she was interactive marketing specialist.
