As Apple did for the music business, Amazon is looking to further shake up book publishing. A few months after inking its first publishing deal with #1 New York Times bestselling author Tim Ferriss, Amazon now plans to publish 122 books this fall in both digital and traditional forms, according to a story in the New York Times. New authors in that crop include actress and director Penny Marshall and thriller writer Barry Eisler. The move turns Amazon into both a distributor of publishers’ products and also a direct competitor as it’s striking deals now with authors. Amazon’s moves will be closely watched especially as it rolls out its new tablet The Kindle Fire that ships next month.
Got a Thanksgiving food question? Food Network may answer it live on-air in its two-hour Thanksgiving Live! special hosted by Alton Brown slated to run on Sunday Nov. 20 at 12 EST. Viewers can ask food questions in advance on Facebook and Twitter and also during the broadcast. The show will also stream online at www.foodnetwork.com with a pre-show and behind-the-scenes footage. Video, photos and social posts will be woven into the online stream.
Telemundo teamed up with Old Navy and ad agency AKQA to produce an interactive made-for-web novela. The six-episode show Estilos Robados launched on October 14 and also runs on Old Navy’s Facebook page and Old Navy’s Spanish YouTube channel.
Social TV service Miso snagged a new partner in AT&T U-verse. Under the deal, AT&T U-verse customers can now connect the Miso iPhone app to a U-verse receiver so that the app can show what’s playing on the TV service.
~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
Interactive advertising platform blurbIQ introduced a new ad tool that lets brands rollout and measure interactive video campaigns across digital marketing formats from online pre-rolls to in-banner, as well as mobile, tablets and social media using one technology provider. BlurbIQ’s technology relies on game mechanics to insert questions into video streams to creative gaming-type environments for ads.
BET’s Hip-Hop Awards 2011 snagged the social buzz crown for the week ending Oct. 16 with the most shares and comments, followed by MTV’s Jersey Shore, and Nickelodeon’s Spongebob Squarepants, according to Social Guide.
Revenues from online TV and digital video will hit $21.52 billion in 2016, up from $3.48 billion in 2010, according to a new report from consultancy Digital TV Research. Within five years, about 415 million homes in 40 countries will watch online TV and video, up from 177 million last year.
Interactive out-of-home network TouchTunes joined the Digital Place-based Advertising Association as its newest member and 36th overall. TouchTunes provides jukeboxes and TV screens to restaurants and bars, along with ad opportunities in them.
In a partnership that marries print and apps, King Features Syndicate teamed with mobile app discovery and analytics service Mobilewalla to launch a syndicated column in newspapers around the country. It kicks off this week and highlights popular and timely apps.
To better connect online and in-store shopping, Sears is introducing iPads and iTouches to its Sears and Kmart stores around the country, according to Mobile Marketer Daily. The report says employees can use the mobile devices to check inventory for customers, order items online and look up product information.
Nickelodeon‘s AddictingGames App hit the top slot in free apps after only two days of release, Nickelodeon said. The app debuted on Friday and brings about 20 games from AddictingGames to mobile devices.
In support of its upcoming flick Tower Heist, Universal Pictures launched a Facebook scavenger hunt that lets users play a similar version of the movie’s storyline, hunting for Heist buttons on Facebook pages and in Facebook ads, with the prize being Facebook credits. Partners in the game’s creation including The Branding Farm and iFeelGoods.
USA TODAY is slated to become the first national newspaper to be made available on Flipboard, the digital magazine platform. The deal calls for Flipboard to include news and photos throughout the day on Flipboard, which has been downloaded “millions” of times on iPads.
~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
Gaming entertainment site Machinima hired Amy Venier to the newly created position of Vice President, Gaming Partnership Development. Her charge is to expand the company’s partnerships with video game publishers. She previously worked at CBS Interactive for nine years and most recently oversaw video game advertising.
Music video site VEVO named Jim Macnie to the new post of Editorial Director. He’ll oversee editorial content for VEVO’s online, mobile, tablet and connected TV platforms that deliver more than 45,000 music videos and original programs. He previously worked as a Managing Editor at VH1.com.
ABC promoted Carla Carpenter to Senior VP for Digital Media at the ABC Owned Television Stations Group. She recently served as VP and News Director at ABC-owned WPVI-TV in Philadelphia. In her new post she’ll oversee digital strategies for the station group.
Digital health network HealthiNation hired Anthony Dunaif as Senior VP Syndication and Strategic Partnerships where he’ll be tasked with growing HealthiNation’s partnerships across multiple platforms. He previously served as Chief Marketing Officer for Inform Technologies.

I’m all for getting kids to step away from the keyboard and screen and head outside to kick a ball or swing a bat. So I was intrigued to learn about FunGoPlay, a new virtual world that claims to bridge the gap between offline and online play. It’s targeted to six- to eleven-year-olds that lets them play virtual games but also rewards them for getting off their butt. The virtual world relies on connected sports gear to get kids moving, so it’s a bit like the Nintendo Wii Fit. Whether it takes off is anyone’s guess, but it’s great to see efforts to encourage kids to move around a bit.
