Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 16, 2007, and this is your first early morning, back on terra firma in the good old USA.

The BBC has ordered up a new dramatic adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank, featuring a screenplay by Deborah Moggach, who penned the screenplay for the recent movie of Pride and Prejudice.  Produced by Darlow Smithson Productions, The Diary of Anne Frank will air on BBC One in five episodes on consecutive nights in early 2008.  The BBC and Darlow Smithson Productions are working in tandem with the Anne Frank-Fonds charitable foundation in order to maintain authenticity of the story.  While not specifically aimed at a youth audience, the story of Anne Frank and her family is often read by young teens.  Casting for the drama includes: Ellie Kendrick as young Anne; Iain Glen (Kingdom Of Heaven, City Of Vice) as Anne’s father Otto; Tasmsin Greig (Love Soup, Green Wing) as Anne’s mother Edith; Felicity Jones (Cape Wrath, Northanger Abbey) will play Anne’s sister Margot; Mr. and Mrs. Van Dann will be played by Ron Cook (Foyle’s War, Hot Fuzz) and Lesley Sharp (The Second Coming, Clocking Off); with Kate Ashfield (Secret Smile, Tsunami: The Aftermath) as Miep; and Nicholas Farrell (Casualty 1906, Talk To Me) as Mr. Dussell.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Season six of Cyberchase debuts on Wednesday, November 7 on PBS Kids GO! (check local listings for times).  The new season is themed Math in Action and will feature ways for kids to try out some math and science concepts to solve problems (e.g. levers, measuring and numbers).  As in the past the season will feature special guest voice-overs.  Returning for another season is Christopher Lloyd as the voice of the villainous Hacker and Gilbert Gottfried as Digit.  Cyberchase is produced by Thirteen/WNET New York in association with Title Entertainment Inc., with funding provided by the National Science Foundation, Ernst & Young LLP, Northrop Grumman Corporation, PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, with additional funding provided by The Volckhausen Family.

Starz Entertainment has launched several new High Definition premium movie channels, Starz Comedy HD, Starz Edge HD and Starz Kids & Family HD on DirecTV.  The three new channels are HD East Coast feeds of the Starz Comedy, Starz Edge, and Starz Kids & Family, and join the Starz HD channels, which are available in East and West Coast feeds.  The new channels, as well as the Starz HD channels, are available at no extra cost to DirecTV Starz Super Pack subs with DirecTV newest HD set-top boxes and HD DVRs.  Movies currently airing exclusively in HD on the Starz HD channels include: Disney/Pixar’s Cars, Scary Movie 4, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Gridiron Gang, and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.  Upcoming HD titles include, Ghost Rider and The Pursuit of Happyness.

KidsCo will be represented by MTG’s Viasat across Central and Eastern Europe, according to C21 Media.  KidsCo is a joint effort by Sparrowhawk Media, DIC Entertainment and Corus’ Nelvana Enterprises.  KidsCo, which had its initial launch this September 2007 in Romania, Russia, Turkey and Poland, is now to be part of a package of channels offered across the region by Viasat.

Cookie Jar Entertainment has inked a deal with ZDF (Germany) for 40 episodes of the animated series Arthur. Additionally, ZDF has renewed rights to Cookie Jar’s series Mona The Vampire.  65 episodes will air on ZDF and ARD’s kid’s channel, KI.KA, and on ZDF.  Arthur airs on Saturday mornings on ZDF, while Mona The Vampire airs Monday-Friday during KI.KA’s afternoon block.

Vivendi Games Mobile launches Slide N’ Loop, a puzzle/strategy casual game developed in partnership with toy inventor Zeki Orak (Lite3).  The game is available now on mobile phones in North America and will bow in Europe in November.  In the game players assist the main character, a young girl named Zia, find four pieces of a magic medallion in order to help save her village. Players loop around the board and slide matching objects into places to score points.  Slide N’ Loop features 20 different game levels, as players score points by matching tiles of the same colored objects in a row, in no more than three consecutive moves.

MARKETING/LICENSING

4Kids Entertainment expands the licensing program for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, including the old artwork of the quartet.   4Kids hand Mirage Licensing have joined to develop a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle retro campaign based on the animated series from the 1980s.  Beginning in November 2007, Hot Topic will launch TMNT retro boutiques at 700 of its stores nationwide, as well as featuring the retro TMNT product online at www.hottopic.com , including products from Giant merchandising (t-shirts, hoodies), Bioworld (caps, beanies, belt buckles).  Additionally, 4Kids is expanding the TMNT retro program across a other categories, with licensees including: NECA (collectible figures); Etchstar (laser etchings on epodes and laptops); and Disguise (Halloween costumes for TMNT’s lead characters).

Hasbro will open the doors to its Littlest Pet Shop VIPs (Virtual Interactive Pets) pop-up boutique in New York City (587 5th Ave, between 47/48 Streets) this week.  Featuring the newly introduced line of plush pets, which each have their own code that serves as an online password, the pop-up store will be open to the public for eight days, October 18-21 (9a-9p) and October 25-28 (9a-7p).

The Game Factory, a video game publisher, has released Bratz Ponyz for DS system bundled with a shrink wrapped Bratz Ponyz pink branded vinyl cartridge purse.  From November 1, 2007, the new package is available for $29.99.  In the Bratz Ponyz game, players participate in the Ponyz Town beauty pageant: Passion for Fashion, a competition that takes place over a year and will give the player the chance to develop artistic talent through a series of challenges based around fashion and beauty.

STONE SOUP

Under Armour, Inc., the sports apparel company, has signed a three-year deal to serve as the title sponsor of the ESPNU High School All-American Game debuting Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.  The annual all-star football competition showcases the top US high school seniors, is a joint effort between ESPN and Intersport, a sports and entertainment media and marketing company. The game will be broadcast live to most of the nation on ABC at 2p, and will air tape delay to the west coast audience at noon PT.  The Under Armour High School All-American Game will focuses on 80+ of the US’ top prep football prospects, who are selected by national recruiting analysts and talent evaluators from ESPN Scouts, Inc.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Jordan Banks has been appointed CEO, JumpTV, effective November 12, 2007.  Also on that date JumpTV’s Chairman and CEO, G. Scott Paterson, will become Executive Chairman of the company. Additionally, Kaleil Isaza Tuzman, JumpTV President and COO and a member of the Board of Directors, will assist Banks in a transition of operating responsibilities through January 8, 2008, at which time he will resign his operating duties at JumpTV to pursue other interests.  Isaza Tuzman will remain on the Company’s Board of Directors.  Most recently, Banks was Managing Director, eBay Canada, where he has been since 2000.  Previously Banks managed the Licensing and International Business group at the National Hockey League Players’ Association.  Banks is the founder and chairman of Sportsfest, a non-profit organization that raises funds for Alzheimer’s disease research and care.  A member of JumpTV’s Board of Directors since May 2007, he also sits on a number of other boards including the Ontario Science Centre and the Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC) among others.  Banks is also one of seven business people who formed the Canadian Football League’s “Commissioner’s Council”, which is focusing on the future growth of the CFL.
