Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 15, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
German soccer league the DFL is going international, inking a multi-component, multi-year deal with 21st Century Fox to deliver Bundesliga football around the world through the media company’s global portfolio of television assets. The agreements call for a five-year term in Asia and the Americas, and a two-year term in Europe, leveraging platforms in over 80 countries or territories that include the United States, Brazil, Canada, China (in English), Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands and more. Under the terms of the agreements, 21st Century Fox will be granted exclusive rights, subject to certain reserved rights, to the Bundesliga in the Americas and Asia excluding India and the Oceania region – as well as Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium starting with the 2015-16 season for all 306 Bundesliga matches each year, as well as the DFL-Supercup and the Bundesliga Relegation Playoffs.
A dramatic Red Sox comeback helped deliver a 5.2/8 national household rating and 8.3 million viewers to FOX on Sunday night, up 44% versus last year’s NLCS Game 2 on FOX and up 24% over 2011’s ALCS Game 2. Through two games, the 2013 ALCS on FOX is averaging a 4.7/8 (7.5 million viewers), up 21% over last year’s 3 NLCS. Through two games, Detroit leads all markets with a 30.5/47 and recorded its best LCS rating ever with the game.
CVC Capital, which owns about a third of Formula 1’s parent company, is reportedly looking to team up with Peter Chernin in an effort to land famed sports rights and talent behemoth IMG. Sky News writes that the tandem of The Chernin Group and CVC Capital will look to offer $2 billion for IMG, and Chernin would join the board of IMG if the bid is successful.
CBS Sports is going with Alabama for its SEC on CBS selection for Saturday, Oct. 26 at 3:30p, where the top-ranked team will face Tennessee. Verne Lundquist,Gary Danielson and reporter Tracy Wolfson call the contest from Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Meanwhile, FOX Sports released its matchups for FOX and FOX Sports 1 on Saturday, Oct. 26, with FOX landing a clash between Teas Tech and Oklahoma at 3:30p. FOX Sports 1’s schedule features West Virginia/Kansas State at 3:45p, followed by Texas/TCU at 7:30p. The action wraps up that night with Cal/Washington at 11p.
Speaking of college football, Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long has been named the first chairman of the College Football Playoff selection committee, according to the AP, joining a 13-member panel that will decide which teams play for the 2014 national championship. The rest of the panel is expected to be officially named on Wednesday.
Finally, ESPN’s pregame show, College GameDay Built by The Home Depot, is slated to return to Clemson University for the second time this season this Saturday at 9a on ESPN. That will mark the first time GameDay has gone to the same site twice within the first eight weeks of a season and the first time since 2007 the show has been to same site twice in a season.
On the local front…
Knicks fans can order up a sampler platter of their team ahead of the new NBA season on Tuesday, October 15 at 11p with MSG Network special Knicks Training Camp Live. The live, two-hour look-in will feature Mike Breen, Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier, Alan Hahn, Wally Szczerbiak, Tina Cervasio and Al Trautwig and include behind-the-scenes access to practice as well as interviews with head coach Mike Woodson Carmelo Anthony and Tim Hardaway, Jr.
On the west coast, Time Warner Cable SportsNet will debut the new series Laker Legends: Showtime Revisited on Wednesday, November 20 at 9p. The four-episode series features Lakers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Cooper, Byron Scott and James Worthy reflecting on their playing days together.

The NBA has officially launched its new spot “BIG is On” for the new season. The new addition spotlights the league’s rising stars, including Damian Lillard, Gordon Hayward, Greg Monroe, Harrison Barnes and John Wall.
Walmart bought in to the NFL in an effort to support its Black Friday sales, according to Ad Age, buying up sponsorships to Thanksgiving Day games. Walmart U.S. Chief Marketing Officer Stephen Quinn told reporters, noting the company’s goal to double beer sales in the next three years. “What we’ve found is that [NFL advertising] also works with our associates, so it has a magnifying effect,” he said.
Daytona International Speedway is rolling out a new marketing campaign designed to beef up promotion for the 2014 Daytona 500 and its redevelopment project, which is set to be completed in time for the 2016 races. The campaign will allow viewers to “hear” directly from past Daytona 500 Champions who proclaim the need to experience the race and will run on the likes of FOX Sports, ESPN, ESPN2 as well as regional outlets. Jump Company developed the creative for the spot.
Dress shirt brand Van Heusen is launching the newest season of their Institute of Style campaign featuring Steve Young, Jerry Rice, and Matthew Stafford. This year, the company is offering an internship with Young as the 2013 campaign is focused on educating and helping men step up their style. Fans can visit the Van Heusen Facebook page to learn more about the opportunity.
The Association of Volleyball Professionals and smart USA reached an agreement for title sponsorship of the AVP’s season-ending championship tournament. The tournament is set for Oct. 17-20 and will now be known as the “smart AVP Championships at Huntington Beach.”
Hunt Brothers Pizza will serve as an associate sponsor of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kevin Harvick and the No. 4 team of Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) beginning in 2014.
