Cynopsis: DIGITAL

10/14/08

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, October 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Apparently what goes down must come up. The battered tech giants charted a northern course on Columbus Day after taking a beating just before the market closed on Friday. Apple, Microsoft, Dell, Cisco and others posted double-digit gains as the Dow soared over 900 points to close at just under 10,000 and the Nasdaq climbed 194 points to close at 1,844.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Encouraged by the huge success of those Sarah Palin skits, NBC Universal is planning to build a standalone site for Saturday Night Live like Comedy Central has done for The Daily Show, per B&C. The site could include a mix of classic sketches along with dress rehearsal footage never seen before by the TV public.

Meanwhile the success of Hulu, whose traffic has also benefited greatly from the Tina Fey impressions, is causing even the conservative HBO to rethink its online video streaming strategy, according to AdAge. HBO.com is developing a video portal that will include clips and some full episodes of its shows.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

YouTube is expanding upon its commitment to snack-sized video clips to offer full-length episodes of shows for the first time. CBS signed a deal with the video sharing site to offer full-length episodes of classic shows on its branded channel including Star Trek, The Young and the Restless, MacGyver and Showtime’s Dexter and Californication. The shows will be accompanied by pre-, mid and post-roll ads, viewable in a new “theater view” video player that allows you to dim the surrounding screen.

Digital entertainment producer DECA signed a partnership with YouTube comedy duo Smosh created by Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox. DECA will provide financing, ad sales, marketing and distribution services for Smosh as it seeks to monetize its audience. Smosh ranks as #3 most subscribed to channel on YouTube all time with 555,000+ subscribers, receiving over 9 million streams a month.

BookRix.com launched as a social network and viral marketing tool for aspiring authors where members can upload, share and comment on original content such as novels or comic books. BookRix features a user-friendly interface that displays creative works in a flipbook format that can be distributed to other platforms. Members review and rate uploaded material and the best received is featured more prominently on the site.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

The BlackBerry Pearl 8220, the smartphone’s first flip model, went on sale yesterday exclusively on the T-Mobile network as a compact option to the iPhone. Features include video recording and playback, a 2.0 megapixel camera with digital zoom, stereo Bluetooth support and Wi-Fi capabilities for both voice and data services. The phone connects with any of T-Mobile’s HotSpots in the U.S. T-Mobile is offering the phone for $150 after rebates.

Fox Reality Channel unveiled a new iPhone app allowing users to view behind-the-scenes clips, and bonus content from Fox Reality Channel Original Series including Battle of the Bods, Solitary and The Academy. Fox Reality Mobile is also viewable as a WAP page at mvideo.foxreality.com.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Microsoft is releasing its latest version of Silverlight today, its platform for advanced web applications and video that has been in beta testing since March. The company says Silverlight, which is vying for market share with Adobe’s ubiquitous Flash, is now installed on roughly 25% of the world’s computers. Microsoft also announced it is funding French IT solutions provider Soyatec to hasten the adoption of apps for the open source platform in non-Windows environments. Silverlight powered NBC Universal’s extensive NBCOlympics.com coverage, which attracted 50 million unique visitors, resulting in 1.3 billion page views, 70 million video streams and 600 million minutes of video watched.

A new viewer participation platform from ionoco and Content Guru was unveiled at MIPCOM yesterday developed to help game shows and other formats modernize their experience for home viewers. “Ionostorm” enables real time polling, voting, quizzes and other applications in a secure, trackable and auditable platform that also integrates with other platforms including voice, SMS, web and mobile responses.

Verizon Wireless introduced some next generation interactive features to FiOS TV subscribers in Maryland and Virginia including a multi-room DVR that allows up to 6 TV sets to access HD recordings and a collection of widgets that will provide news, sports programming and traffic information by zip code. A new fantasy football app from ESPN allows viewers to keep track of their team’s scoring and stats in real time. The “My Videos” feature will port videos from any PC in the house to a FiOS connected TV.

A SureWest Communications system has deployed a new iTV platform from Plano,TX-based BIAP utilizing the Enhanced TV Binary Exchange Format (EBIF) standard developed by Cable Labs as part of the Canoe initiative. Subscribers in SureWest’s Kansas City system have been using the system to view Yellow Pages, check eBay listings, browse local news and weather and check their Fantasy players performances.

Looking to increase its chances of meeting its 1 million-subscriber goal by the end of the year, AT&T entered into a marketing deal to sell its U-verse IPTV video and internet services in more than 600 Circuit City and Wal-Mart stores beginning this month. The company hopes U-verse will pass 30 million homes by 2010.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Going after smaller advertisers traditionally served by Google, MySpace unveiled its do-it-yourself MyAds platform, opening up its HyperTargeting technology to small businesses with prices starting as little as $25 per campaign and 25 cents/click. The system provides a template for advertisers to create their own banner ads that can be targeted to run on users’ profile pages based on demographics, geographic location and user interest. Facebook launched its own SocialAds program last year.

VOD vendor SeaChange began its first dynamic ad insertion trial in London this week on Virgin Media TV’s on demand platform. Participating advertisers such as Kellogg’s and Royal Mail will have their ads inserted into select on demand programs in a variety of lengths and formats including single 30-second pre-rolls, consecutive pre-rolls and end rolls over the next three weeks. On Demand Group and Rentrak will provide tracking information to measure usage and engagement.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Call viral video a recession buster. A survey of 40 major ad agencies and media buyers by Feed Company found that 70% of marketers expect to increase their viral video ad budgets in the coming year. Yet ad agencies are seeking improvements on how viral video campaigns are tracked and executed: 95% of respondents seek greater accountability from vendors responsible for tracking campaign effectiveness, and more than half say there is a need for better execution of strategies.

Newspapers online ad revenue fell 2.4% to $777 million during Q2 according to the Newspaper Association of America after 17 straight quarters of growth.

Nielsen Online and Beijing Zhongqian Wangrun Information Technology Co., Ltd. announced the formation of a joint venture that will deliver internet measurement and analysis services in China, one of the world’s largest and fastest growing online markets. The new venture, CR-Nielsen, is the first company authorized to support the delivery of standardized internet measurement services in China, according to Nielsen Online. The venture released initial findings on traffic to top Web sites, including top video sites:

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

NBC’s Local Media division is rolling out a series of city-focused web portals meant to transform what were branded TV station shingles into vibrant destinations for their local audiences. The sites, beginning with nbcchicago.com – which launched yesterday – will replace the tv station-centric sites formerly managed by Internet Broadcasting that limited each station’s ability to personalize its experience for local market users. The new look is a vast improvement, featuring less clutter, more effective visuals and a more web 2.0 tools such as real-time traffic cams and mapping features to prevent folks from leaving the local mother ship. Navigation is accomplished by clicking on categories at the top (News, Sports, Around Town, etc.,) that in turn take you to sub categories. (Weird news is fun one.) The plan is to incorporate text, videos, slideshows, blogs and other features along with each story where it makes sense, even if it means linking out to a competitors’ site. Each station is developing its own network of bloggers and other freelancers to help expand coverage of the local community. Social features such as commenting also plays a key role. Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco will get new sites on Oct. 16, followed by Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. on Oct. 20 and New York and Hartford on Oct. 27. The sites will look very much the same initially, according to Brian Buchwald, SVP of NBC Local Integrated Media, but version 2.0 coming toward the end of Q1 2009 will add greater customization features to each local station. We’ve all heard how difficult it is for stations to manage their web operations but it’s about time they started taking more direct control of their sites if they want to remain relevant. “We have to own our own destiny in order to effect changes that are important to us,” Mr. Buchwald said of the NBC O&Os decision to bring its web operations in house.
